I'm not sure a lot of people understand the dialog and unrealistic reactions were meant to keep a surreal aura. This isn't a game for realism, it's hyper-realism. Things are done strangely in order to keep that bizarre dreamlike feel. Yes, he might have freaked in a normal setting, but remember this isn't reality, it's a work of fiction, and within that fiction is another layer of reality. Read some fucking Kafka.
