I don't understand why they even put barrels on guns that are probably going to be used at 15 feet or less.Just firing straight out the front of the cylinder through the frame is going to be just as accurate at point blank ranges and the lack of a barrel would make it easier to conceal,like the old pepperboxes.

This is where it gets sketchy because I can't find anything that is 100% solid but South American judges are constantly under attack from Drug Cartels and what have you. They did not carry them in their robes like he said, they carried them on their person as defense. Started in Brazil when it was released and spread northward. What I do know for a fact is that it was not called the Judge when it was released. It was called the Tracker and still is technically the Tracker.
@NorthRainProductions it is not technically the tracker, the tracker is a different line of guns taurus makes that fire a 357mag, 44mag, and a 22lr. They have the same grips but a completley different frame.
There is getting to be a bigger choice of ammo for the Judge than any other revolver. Maybe the Medusa revolver has more but you would probably have to pay 2 grand if you could find one.
I own the 4 inch jugde this gun is very deadly at 10 yards with 000 buck shot.I'd rather shoot 4 holes in the bad guy at one time.Then one colt 45.This is a bad ass gun .

I dis agree , My judge sits on my night stand every night, and the variety of ammo that can be shot out of it, makes it a very good self defense platform. you can put bird shot in it for snakes , buck shot, or 45 LC in it for larger creatures, including bad guys.
A friend of mine has one. It's a decent gun, but very picky on ammo. Standard .410 shells are a pain to extract. Pricey "handgun" rounds are preferred.

Three pellets are NOT going to spead that much. I have fired the Judge at self defence distances 7 15 and 25 ft. The groups at 25 ft was only about 4 inches, Not enough to kill a bystander. Very close a hole about the size of a half dollar at seven feet. Great car gun.

@Ralastar: The .45 Colt cartridge has been used for self defense for over 100 years. With new advances in ammo designed specifically for defense and not over penetrating it's perfectly good for defense. Though I'm not a personal fan of the judge, for some it works and that's perfectly ok. Just because it's not your preference doesn't mean it's not capable.
I am well aware of the existence, history, and stats of the .45 long colt. I own three firearms that are chambered for it. It is one of the most versatile and best cartridges ever produced. It is a common hunting cartridge
My opinion was that the .45LC is a huge, muscular load. Sending it flying out of a 2 inch barrel of a tiny little gun is dangerous, and unreliable. On a human target? Talk about overkill.
In a self-defense situation, even if you hit your target, it's going to go through them, and keep going. Maybe it will have a slightly slower velocity, but its trajectory will also change. You'll be going through walls, windows, and maybe other people. And what, by chance, you miss? Can you honestly tell me you could bring that teeny little gun back to bare on the target in the time it takes for your attacker to shoot back? Makes my hand numb just thinking about it.
@Ralastar I don't think the .45LC is a bad cartridge, but in the commercials they seem to endorse using .410 birdshot for self defense. That, my friend, is absurd.

In case you haven't noticed the ammo shortage is pretty much over, at its peak I found 410s but not 38 specials. Yes I watched the video, 2'--your depth perception is way off or did you make that up. The gun has a 2 1/2 " barrel not 2, longer than many effective stubbies. A 45LC will not go through 20 people like you imply. Some people may hunt with a 45LC but it is far from being a common hunting round. Please don't delete your fabrications, so everybody can get a good laugh.
The problem with using .410 as a self defense load is the it UNDERpenetrates. Even with buckshot it cannot penetrate enough to reliably reach vitals. The Judge is a novelty, only attractive to those in search of a toy and the uninformed.
This was recently used in a successful self-defense shooting in Tennessee. An older gentleman was mugged outside his home while carrying some groceries. He pulled out his judge, bad guy died shortly after.

In a self-defense situation, even if you hit your target, it's going to go through them, and keep going. Maybe it will have a slightly slower velocity, but its trajectory will also change. You'll be going through walls, windows, and maybe other people. And what, by chance, you miss? Can you honestly tell me you could bring that teeny little gun back to bare on the target in the time it takes for your attacker to shoot back? Makes my hand numb just thinking about it.

@Ralastar I don't think the .45LC is a bad cartridge, but in the commercials they seem to endorse using .410 birdshot for self defense. That, my friend, is absurd.

.45 colt has more power than a 9mm or a .357 magnum or if you are worried about over penetration use .410. I don't really understand your point.

I understand that. What a waste of money. You'd have to buy specialty ammo for it. As if common ammo isn't hard enough to even find, or buy at a reasonable price. Did you even see this video? He was firing the specialty shotshell from like 2 feet away. Of course it's not going to spread. But what about 10 feet. 20? I hope you like lawsuits, because you're going to hit a lot more than your initial target.

In case you haven't noticed the ammo shortage is pretty much over, at its peak I found 410s but not 38 specials. Yes I watched the video, 2'--your depth perception is way off or did you make that up. The gun has a 2 1/2 " barrel not 2, longer than many effective stubbies. A 45LC will not go through 20 people like you imply. Some people may hunt with a 45LC but it is far from being a common hunting round. Please don't delete your fabrications, so everybody can get a good laugh.

The problem with using .410 as a self defense load is the it UNDERpenetrates. Even with buckshot it cannot penetrate enough to reliably reach vitals. The Judge is a novelty, only attractive to those in search of a toy and the uninformed.

This was recently used in a successful self-defense shooting in Tennessee. An older gentleman was mugged outside his home while carrying some groceries. He pulled out his judge, bad guy died shortly after.
