He says in the video that it's a D minor tuning--the most common tuning for Skip James songs. I think you'll find it's a lot easier to play in D minor. Also easier to hit in that falsetto than in G
This clip is a wonderful tribute to John Cephas who passed away of natural causes on march 4th, 2009.
"More than anything else, I would like to see a revival of country blues by more young people more people going to concerts, learning to play the music, Cephas once said. Thats why I stay in the field of traditional music. I dont want it to die."
The tuning is Dminor. John Cephas is a major Peidmont/Bentonia style player out of Virginia. Look him up, buy his stuff, you'll be glad you did. Look for him under "Cephas and Wiggins."

Dminor tuning, Skip used it a lot. Very nice version of the song, by the way.

And that means every string is tuned down a whole step, or a whole tone..?
Except the A and D string I mean...

Yes thats right. Just put a capo on the second fret and tune down.

John uses Elixer light gauge strings, he has his guitar tuned in D-minor tuning. DADF#AD

It's the playing, not the strings. Just regular old Elixir lights on that baby.
