12/5/11: My fave scene from this film, because of how good it is, and because of the "cinema history" behind it. But beyond that: I am preceded by three commentators who just watched it on TCM tonight, as I have, and isn't this amazing? We can watch it on TCM, and then call it up on YouTube and comment on it?
TCM just said that Cagney appeared in this film unpaid to repay the kindness of the Foy Family (they helped him a lot when he was just starting out in show business). They had to rehearse for 10 days to get the steps right. He wasn't paid for that, either. He sure looks like he's having a ball, doesn't he?
I just watched the movie -- this dance routine blew me away. I can't believe they were that age when they did it. Bob Hope was impressive (I had no idea he was THAT good a dancer) and Cagney -- I just love his style -- he's just the best.
While I agree that these men are amazingly talented, I also believe that it's ridiculous to compare them to today's performers. it's quite like comparing apples to oranges. Who knows what these producers may have used had the technology been more advanced? Get out of the past and embrace pop culture rather than running from it, for it will do you know good. It will beat you in the long term.
Holy crap! I never knew Bob Hope could dance! I always thought of him as an actor/comedian/host. I knew Cagney had a dance background but Hope surprised me.
omg are you people that uneducated ?? DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MAN DID TO BRICE TAYLOR AND OTHER INNOCENT PEOPLE??? HORRIBLE THINGS!!! PLEASE DO RESEARCH
Fantastic routine by Hope & Cagney. However, I recall that the strain of doing this routine convinced Cagney he didn't have the endurance he formerly had.
Stunning. Great talent. Never see this side of Bob Hope before. Their past training in dance and years of experience in showbiz shows true professionalism. Enjoyed this immensley. Thanks for posting this vid.
What a treat to see two "pros" deliver the goods! Vaudeville was the training ground for both Hope and Cagney, who pay great tribute to Foy (vaudeville champ!) and Cohan (first "gent" of the American Theatre for decades!) with this segment from a wonderful film that needs to be released on video! Let's have ALL of "The Seven Little Foys," please!!

Hope was a boxer for a little while and got his famous nose from it. Cagney was a street fighter, before he was a "chorus boy"on broadway. Both tough guys, really, each with ferocious energy. The "Dead End kids," really kids recruited off the streets for the movie, Others actors they made fun of; they were in awe of Cagney. You can even see it in the scenes they have with him.
@JRobbySh Sorry, Robby, but you are wrong about the origin of the "Dead End kids." They were actors in the original Broadway cast of the play "Dead End," then brought to Hollywood for the film. It's success led Warners to use them as the "Dead End Kids" in the classic Cagney/O'Brien film "Angels With Dirty Faces," then to a series of B-films.. Eventually, Leo Gorcey of the "kids" formed "The Bowery Boys" with several of the same members and they filmed B-movies until the late 50s.
Both Hope & Cagney started out in vaudeville, as dancers & comedians. Hope stayed with comedy, Cagney went with acting, but when you view this, makes you wonder why he didn't pursue some roles in musicals. I favor Cagney, his personal life would make a very interesting movie.
Kids, get a clue. These two guys needed a table, a piano and taps on their shoes to put on an amazing performance.
No special effects, no light show or any electronics except a camera.
Show me a current day "celebrity" who can pull that off. Hats off to you if you can come up with one, because I'd really like to believe that there are some real entertainers still out there.
@takeoption3 I suppose you could say Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris (especially when they dance together) are possibly the only 2 I know in the movie business that can pull off dancing and singing and being just plain entertainers for the crowd.
@takeoption3 My friend I have to agree with you, this was when Entertainment WAS entertainment. Now it has to be done all sort of special effects, that is why I stopped going to the movies. I have an account with netflix, so I can watch the greatest of the greats.
In the days when a performer had to perfect several types of performing arts because his contract could lead him anywhere. These gentlemen were true & awesome performers. Their talent is gone forever in a world of actors who are just celebrities and very few are true performance artists.
@46geson19 Agree - great entertainers and still up to speed in their 50's to perform on a narrow table like that.
I got an email from someone who forwarded this saying Hope was actually 52 which would be true if he was born May 29, 1903 as the international movie dada base says and this movie came out in September of 1955.
@starrbeatlesqueen You are quite right! This makes the dancing gentlemen´s performence even better! I can watch it over and over again and enjoy the dancing.

Best scene in the film. Show em' how it's done Jimmy & Bob! 2 legends who held mutual regard & respect in real life for one another. I saw Cagney receive the AFI Award many years back & Bob came on to honor Jimmy with this clip and some due "roasting" from an old pal. So much talent overflowing from these 2 its uncanny.
Whatever happened to the innocence of entertainment? I respect the 50's and early 40's, and early 60's due to the lack of cursing and sexual acts in moives. The the 70's and 80's really changed the innocence of entertainment.
According to what is published about Hope (and Foy to a lesser exent) one of the reasons Hope liked this movie is that he had more or less the same feeling about show biz, it came first and foremost, above family, kids etc. Hope was notorious for "not being around" much when he was working, and foy also. Hope considered this his best role, and thought he might have one the oscar for it (it is a so so movie at best). Cagney never spoke to much about Hope, so who knows what he thought of him.
The other was the bittersweet That Certain Feeling, in which, if memory serves, Hope played a brilliant comic strip artist who slaves away for star George Sanders, who has stolen away Hope’s ex-wife, Eva Marie Saint, whom Hope is trying to win back, and who has never really stopped loving him.
Unfortunately, Hope’s comedy fans wouldn’t tolerate him stepping out on them, and so, for better or worse, he stuck to comedy.
Wow. I saw this picture on TV as a kid and loved it, but don’t remember this scene. While it’s possible that I simply forgot it, more likely, it was cut for commercials.
This is one of the two pictures that left me with the impression that Bob Hope could have been a great dramatic actor.
I agree with gjm1953, I do believe that they both probably were students and performers of the entertainers of Vaudeville, where,in turn you had to excel at every thing. I was amazed when I first realized what great musicians the marx brothers were It wasn't just comedy. Groucho's brother the blond mute one who was always doing naughty things with his horn. was a genius on the large harp.

they are great sad that they died after the movie was made they were great dancers and great actors unlike the ones on T.V. now why was it that no one knows that when that segment was filmed Cagney had a sharp pain go down his legs because those dance moves were move he had no done in years. 13 years after Yankee doodle dandy was released he had to do these moves again but with his health issues were making him fell the worst pain he ever did when this was filmed.
@WE12WE22 While true this routine caused Cagney great discomfort, I am perplexed by the first part of your statement about them dying after the film was made. Cagney lived another 30 years and Hope another 50.
I like Bob Hope's segment, in the way that though the music didn't get faster, his dancing/footwork did - fab! BTW, I watch this at least a couple of times a week, amazed each time as I see this as I was the first time.
Just happened to be watching Bob last night in one of his last movies "How to Commit Marriage" (not one of his best but still funny). I'd never noitced before but he walked like a dancer. He had tremendous grace and style in regard to the way he moved. I suppose he learnt all that from his years on the stage. It's a sort of breezy, fluidness. And, of course, we all remember that wonderfully authoritative, straight back walk with which he came on stage. So relaxed. So confident. So stylish.
We really are lumbered with a bunch of no talent bums in the movies these days when you look back at the likes of Hope and Cagney. As for Hope, we tend to forget just how damned talented he really was. Probably the most accomplished screen comedian of all times, a great dancer and no slouch as a singer either (he introduced so many classic songs). He also showed glimpses of real dramatic talent on several occasions as well. The sheer scope and variety of their talent was mind boggling.
Wow, I love Cagney and always like Hope, but how did I not recall that Hope could dance for REAL?! I think his skills as a dancer have been sorely underrated. Thanks for posting.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
fucking boring-ass WHITE people music for WHITE pieces of shit...... who gives a shit?? break dancing is far better than this boring ass crap. HIP HOP FOREVER, BITCHES!! IF YOU WHITE, U AINT RIGHT
Cagney was 54 at the time. He was pretty much semi-retired at the time but said he kept his fitness up by dancing for an hour every day. It clearly shows.
@auspete I once heard that there were two types of dancers: Tappers and Hoofers. The Tapper stays mainly on his toes while the Hoofer uses the whole [flat] foot. If you watch closely, both Cagney and Hope dance on their toes. But you are right: great talent, class, and extinct.
You know what's really stunning about this? Neither of these guys became famous for dancing. Hope was, for a time, America's Comedian. And James Cagney was a great actor, one of the biggest movie stars of his era. But watching this clip, it's easy to believe that they both could have been just as big as song-and-dance men.
@gjm1953 Absolutely, my friend! My grandfather was a dancing instructor in those days gone by and he thought Cagney was superb. Also, when Cagney came out of retirement to act in "Ragtime" he apparently remarked that he wanted to dance. In his own words, "Once a song and dance man, always a song and dance man."
@digga2552 Yep, he sure could. And here's something else you may not have known. Hope used to box. He fought under the name "Packy East". I've no idea what kind of record he ran up.
@gjm1953 Actually they did! Cagney, known for his serious tough guy acting roles was reknowned as a stage & screen hoofer from way back in vaudeville & won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the iconic music dancer/composer George M. Cohan in musical biopic "Yankee Doodle Dandee" and made many musicals including starting out doing films for Busbee Berkley, musicals such "The Strawberry Blonde", and more, Bob Hope was a Huge vaudeville, stage & screen song & dance man all his life as well!
Absolutely wonderful! They were really ARTISTS!

Coolrockndad 6 months ago
@Coolrockndad well the "moonwalk" is a technique used in Jazz dance. It's been around for decades and decades. MJ just gave it a name
JamesJonathon013 6 months ago

I read somewhere that most of this dance routine was practiced but some adlib...rather great I think...both are wonderful Americans.!!

Each one of us holds many universes within ourselves rings true with both these actors! Happy 4th of July USA!

You know if you didn't cut it and entertain in Vaudeville you got the hook so only the best survived -
dmcarty 7 months ago
Both Bob Hope and James Cagney started out in vaudeville so that is where their talent as "hoofers" comes from.

James Cagney did this movie for free in honor of Eddie Foy

Great stuff! This is why I watch mostly older (30s-50s) movies. When Hollywood still knew who the Bad Guys are.

they are great sad that they died after the movie was made they were great dancers and great actors unlike the ones on T.V. now why was it that no one knows that when that segment was filmed Cagney had a sharp pain go down his legs because those dance moves were move he had no done in years. 13 years after Yankee doodle dandy was released he had to do these moves again but with his health issues were making him fell the worst pain he ever did when this was filmed.
WE12WE22 7 months ago
@WE12WE22 While true this routine caused Cagney great discomfort, I am perplexed by the first part of your statement about them dying after the film was made. Cagney lived another 30 years and Hope another 50.

OMG...these men were truly amazing. I absolutely love the showmanship and style that they display. "sigh" They don't make them like they used to...
maelstrom143 7 months ago
I like Bob Hope's segment, in the way that though the music didn't get faster, his dancing/footwork did - fab! BTW, I watch this at least a couple of times a week, amazed each time as I see this as I was the first time.

Clip from Seven Little Foys". Cagney & Hope were true stars not like the talentless celebs of today.

Cagney was 55 years old and Hope not far behind. Name one star today that has lasted that long.
oldgirl6 7 months ago
Cagney was 54 at the time. He was pretty much semi-retired at the time but said he kept his fitness up by dancing for an hour every day. It clearly shows.

Have shown this to my high school students, and they love it every time! Great art never goes stale or old, and is always appreciated.

Cagney was not only a great actor but a brilliant dancer. So many people are unaware of his superb talents and only know him as a gamgster. Genius!

Never knew Hope was such a hoofer! Some fine banter too. Talent. CLASS. Now sadly extinct.
auspete 8 months ago 2
@auspete I once heard that there were two types of dancers: Tappers and Hoofers. The Tapper stays mainly on his toes while the Hoofer uses the whole [flat] foot. If you watch closely, both Cagney and Hope dance on their toes. But you are right: great talent, class, and extinct.

Holy Road Picture! Hope did the moonwalk! Goes to show 'ya. Ain't nothin' new under the sun. Thanks for the memories Hope and Cagney.

You know what's really stunning about this? Neither of these guys became famous for dancing. Hope was, for a time, America's Comedian. And James Cagney was a great actor, one of the biggest movie stars of his era. But watching this clip, it's easy to believe that they both could have been just as big as song-and-dance men.
gjm1953 9 months ago 25
@gjm1953 - Are you ever right about that!
lovemypeke1 8 months ago
@gjm1953 Absolutely, my friend! My grandfather was a dancing instructor in those days gone by and he thought Cagney was superb. Also, when Cagney came out of retirement to act in "Ragtime" he apparently remarked that he wanted to dance. In his own words, "Once a song and dance man, always a song and dance man."

@gjm1953 Great clip!! I knew Cagney could dance, but I didn't know Hope could hoof it, as well!!!
digga2552 6 months ago
@digga2552 Yep, he sure could. And here's something else you may not have known. Hope used to box. He fought under the name "Packy East". I've no idea what kind of record he ran up.
gjm1953 6 months ago
@gjm1953 Hope said of his "Packy East" boxing career: "I was on more canvasses than Picasso!"

@gjm1953 well james cagney is very well known for being George M Cohan the song and dance man
PinkCowgirl925 6 months ago
@gjm1953 Actually they did! Cagney, known for his serious tough guy acting roles was reknowned as a stage & screen hoofer from way back in vaudeville & won an Academy Award for his portrayal of the iconic music dancer/composer George M. Cohan in musical biopic "Yankee Doodle Dandee" and made many musicals including starting out doing films for Busbee Berkley, musicals such "The Strawberry Blonde", and more, Bob Hope was a Huge vaudeville, stage & screen song & dance man all his life as well!

I cannot believe what I'm seeing! Imagine being that loose and limber at their ages??? Fantastic!
