Y'know, there's a lot of groups who've done covers of songs from many Metal Gods. Some of those covers...weren't worth the 3-6 minutes wasted listening to them, and others sound...moderately listenable, at best, mostly due to being reworked or fashioned to suit the style of the band doing them. But honestly, I think Hatebreed did a pretty damn good job of sticking to Slayer's style. Not quite as good as Slayer, obviously (who could outdo the masters?), but a damn good attempt. Nice job, guys.

Nobody every said Slayer was great because of guitar solos. Their solos are fast and raw, which fits their style perfectly. No, they're not long and complex like Dream Theater or anything like that, but there would be no point in having that in a Slayer song. Their solos are there to serve a purpose - to punctuate certain moments of a song and to amp up the intensity after a chorus or bridge and in some cases like Hell Awaits and Raining Blood to go out with a bang. It adds to the raw energy.

I don't accept the "they're doing the song in THEIR style" explanation because Hatebreed plays an inferior style of music to Slayer, therefore they are essentially trying to drag Slayer down to their level, which is a joke. As a Slayer fan and a Hatebreed fan, I like it for the most part. However there are three main things about this I don't like. (1) the fact that the other guitarist, I forgot his name, can't play either Hanneman or King's solos, (2) the whole morbid doctor concept wasn't working, and (3) I like Jamey Jasta but I don't like it when he wears that hardcore headband. I'm a huge Slayer fan, there's no denying this. Slayer doesn't do shit wrong, no denying that either. BUT, Hatebreed wasn't trying to top them or outdue Slayer at their own song.
