I too think they should or preserved the buildings and bunkers. However, I understand that they needed to destroy them in fear of creating a shrine and just needing to rid themselves of the Nazi state.

Albert Speer designed the Zeppelin field, he also invented a term he called "ruin value". A plan where his creations would present aesthetically pleasing ruins like the roman and greek ones. Hitler embraced this idea. Speer's results are apparent in this vid.
Zeppelin Field hasn't been "kept" really well and that's a shame. Everything from The Berghof to The Eagle's Nest (now a restuarant and that's cool) and everything in between should have been preserved for history. This site..the Zeppelin field and podium....is neither an official tourist attraction with information boards, nor has it been demolished. It has just been left by the Germans to gradually erode. A peculiar attitude that belies an inability to face the past and take responsibility.

Thanks for posting this. My father was stationed at Darby. Mom, Dad, some friends, and I visited "Hitler's Stadium" back in 1986. This place is full of history. Everyone should see this place as well as a concentration camp.

I was there last weekend, visited the dockument centre and stood where Hitler stood on the podium at the Zepplinfeld. Fasinating but chilling. At he same time there is a relaxed atmosphere, with the parade ground and the adjacent lake having many inline skaters, tourists,cyclists etc.
One wonders if the buildings will ever be rebuilt and used again....My uncle occupied an air base called Bad Eibling SE of Muenchen at the end of war. Scads of pictures were left in one basement. My uncle as a photographer saved lots of the photographs from the 1937 dedication of the base. I have one picture of Hitler and Baldur Shirach and base officials having a drink. They all look so laid back and normal in these photogrpahs...

Yes it is very different! I went there in 1977 and the Zeppelin Field was fenced off and in complete disrepair (and somewhat overgrown by vegetation like the stands still are today). The museum did not exist, and it was an area that appeared like Germany just wanted to forget about. Apparently the Germans realized it was a large tourist draw, as well as some interest to Germans seeking to learn about their history (which seems to be avoided for the most part at schools, etc).
Well, by the mid 80's we were using the soccer field in the middle and also having organizational days there...We also would do wind sprints on the airfield. I miss it very much and hope i can make it back some day.
Talk about change. I was at Merrell Barracks from Jan. 75 to nov. 78. It was so bad, we had a midnite curfew. No one could come in and no one could go out. We were known then as "Gangster Kaserne". All the shell holes were still on the walls. the documentzentrum was'nt there. there is now another floor built on the top of the left side. nurnberg has really gone down hill. I was there in 2006. Not as nice.....
They closed that Base more than a Decade ago and I believe made Appartment Buildings out it. I haven't been "Home" in Nuernberg for 9 Years. Miss it terribly!

There is also a hitler/nazi walking tour that is well worth the time to take. I'd also reccommend going to Dachau. Thanks for posting this. My father was stationed at Darby. Mom, Dad, some friends, and I visited "Hitler's Stadium" back in 1986. This place is full of history. Everyone should see this place as well as a concentration camp.

The crimes of the Japs in wwII were unspeakable! They deserved more than 2 atomic bombs. The Wogs they have at gitmo and abu gharab are by definition Spys since they were not in uniform and as such should have been put up against the wall and shot.

I agree, the holocaust has also been used by the yanks and British to hide their own murderous deeds, no one remembers the native american indian being murdered, we still watch films about it today as though we should praise them, don't forget the German soldiers that were murdered by the yanks, and the Vietnamese woman and children, 2 bombs on Japan, should or dare I go on. I don't know about you but the zeppelin field looks much better without that nasty swastika on top of it. White Power (Nazis) has been defeated and reduced to a bunch of punk kids acting like they actually have a cause worth fighting for. Pathetic.

I was there last weekend, visited the dockument centre and stood where Hitler stood on the podium at the Zepplinfeld. Fasinating but chilling. At he same time there is a relaxed atmosphere, with the parade ground and the adjacent lake having many inline skaters, tourists,cyclists etc.

One wonders if the buildings will ever be rebuilt and used again....My uncle occupied an air base called Bad Eibling SE of Muenchen at the end of war. Scads of pictures were left in one basement. My uncle as a photographer saved lots of the photographs from the 1937 dedication of the base. I have one picture of Hitler and Baldur Shirach and base officials having a drink. They all look so laid back and normal in these photogrpahs...

Not quite the very podium because they extended is so people can't stand where Hitler did. That wasn't enough though so now they've actually put a barrier across, it's not very big though.

when the city decided to keep the monuments for historic and educational reasosn it was also concerned that neo nazis could meet up at those places but they dont , i live there

They make Hitler MORE of a martyr by destroying all these historical buildings, I'm glad they didn't detroy these. When they leave the sites Hitler becomes a part of history, they show he is part of the PAST, instead they make him mysterious and more dangerous to the stupid neo-Nazis by destroying the structures associated with him.

I met my wife in Nurnberg in 1975 at the "Volksfest" so Nurnberg was lucky for me.
The one place that really sucked was "Ferris Barracks in Erlangen". I wish that place would have burned down.

Yes it is very different! I went there in 1977 and the Zeppelin Field was fenced off and in complete disrepair (and somewhat overgrown by vegetation like the stands still are today). The museum did not exist, and it was an area that appeared like Germany just wanted to forget about. Apparently the Germans realized it was a large tourist draw, as well as some interest to Germans seeking to learn about their history (which seems to be avoided for the most part at schools, etc).

Well, by the mid 80's we were using the soccer field in the middle and also having organizational days there...We also would do wind sprints on the airfield. I miss it very much and hope i can make it back some day.

Talk about change. I was at Merrell Barracks from Jan. 75 to nov. 78. It was so bad, we had a midnite curfew. No one could come in and no one could go out. We were known then as "Gangster Kaserne". All the shell holes were still on the walls. the documentzentrum was'nt there. there is now another floor built on the top of the left side. nurnberg has really gone down hill. I was there in 2006. Not as nice.....

oh wow, I remember the Merrell Barracks!
They closed that Base more than a Decade ago and I believe made Appartment Buildings out it. I haven't been "Home" in Nuernberg for 9 Years. Miss it terribly!
