I really like how you drew the comparison between the different decades, with Sgt. Pepper's, DSotM, Thriller, and OK Computer. Now that we're well into 2010, do you think there were any albums released in the 2000s that goes up to that same level? A defining album of the 2000s, per se?
@Underload6 haven't decided yet, we are still fresh out of the aughts. I have some candidates though. Arcade Fire - Funeral. Flaming Lips - Yoshimi. The Shins - Shoots too narrow. Gnarles Barkley - St Elswhere. Interpol - Antics... so many more to choose from
@Underload6 oooh, and there's Radiohead - Kid A. Outckast - Stankonia. Jay-Z - The Blueprint/Black album. The Strokes - Room on Fire. Beck - Sea Change. The White Stripes - Elephant. Spoon - Kill the Moonlight. Broken Social Scene - You forgot it in people. ack... so many! how can I choose one?!
If you like dj shadow and that type of really artistic samples music, then you should try listening to The Avalanches. great vids btw, a shame you stopped making them :P
yeah, I like the avalanches as well... and I was thinking of restarting this series... I just stopped because I thought not enough people were interested.
I hope you do, because I want you to talk about some newer music. There probably be allot more of that that I can relate to, but also to know know what sort of stuff your into at the moment ;)
I've been watching your 4 musical biography's and it is scary. The similarity with all that iv'e been influenced by. Except maybe from 2 bands its all the same with me. When I heard the first chord of "master of puppets", I tought:"no it can't be." And then also Primus, man. I can copy paste this, put my name under it and I would not be lying if I said its my musical autobiography. And indeed Frank Zappa really puts you in your place. Have you noticed the similarity between him and Les Claypool
so i was looking to see if Bjork put out any autobiographies on google.. when i stumbled upon your musical autobiography. you have great music taste and some of these artists i really never considered listening to or heard of until watching these videos. you kind of inspire me to want to make my own, and if i did i'd totally credit you for inspiration and a great idea. please don't stop making these, they are really interesting!
Even to this day, when I hear the open guitar riffs of Paranoid Android, a little shiver runs down my spine. That song almost made me believe in God. =0
i gotta admit i've never been able to get into radiohead. like in jaws when that old dude rakes his fingers across a chalk board and everyone gives him the wtf look. i have the same reaction to radiohead lol. what the hell is it i'm missing, because everyone who really knows music always puts radiohead high on their list, if not at the top?
I sorry but I detest Radiohead for some reason, why do people mention Bjork in the same sentance as Radiohead?
I can't put my finger on it why I hate them, maybe they smell funny I don't know, but I get that same bad vibe from them as I get from Christina Aguilera.
With the Bjork thing, ditto man. I was in Art collage at the time when her second album came out, a lot of these hippy type chicks where playing that album at the time. I was this red blooded guy into heavymetal thinking eletronic music was false, but on that song Hyperballad my heart sank.
After all these years I'm finally going to see her perform live on 28th of Jan with her Reactable, I can't wait.
I can't believe I'm on mostly the same track with you this far (though I got Blind Melon dropped into my lap a bit earlier). Like, it's getting eerie, as in your listing things in the same order I would.
I saw Radiohead live in Grant Park in Chicago. I couldn't even see them, and it was easily one of the most powerful performances I've ever heard off in the distance. That album is everything the 90s could be, from the music to the animation to the rebellion.
these musical autobiographies are so cool! you ever get into Sublime at all? i think that band is so underrated by most people. they got some clips on youtube of them playing a long time ago for small parties and they KILL! it's unbelievable what they were doing, it was so different than anything else at the time. check out the vid i saved "sublime-don't push" if that doesn't blow you away you ain't human.
I liked sublime's 40 oz. to freedom. Keep in mind there are MANY bands and artists I am not mentioning here. I'm just picking out the core most important in my own personal progression.
the black screens are very intentional. Forces you to listen to the music with no distractions, and makes the introduction of the next pic that much more intense.

I saw her in 1997 or 1998 in Ruisrock, Finland and in 2003 in Roskilde, Denmark. She's a genius. And she gets better and weirder album by album.

Even though I've personally despised half of the bands you've mentioned, (Radiohead, though, kicks my ass) I love these things.
