It looks like a Funk conversion to me. Many were done at the Ford dealers. An easy way to tell a Funk conversion is it used a heavy cast iron oil pan that was a supporting member. Other conversions used external frame rails to support the engine.
@MrCraig1930 No they didn't. You are mistaken. The Funk brothers would take factory tractors and convert them to inline 6s and V8s and resell them. "Young people" don't need to listen to you just because you are older. Also, just because you are older doesn't mean you are smarter.
Okay. I remember my grandfather's 1949 Ford 8N. Sometimes it had sigle rib front tires and sometimes it had 3 ribbed tires. Somebody explain to this city slcker what's the purpose of one or the other?
Built when people used to be allowed to enjoy thier working vehicles and take great pride in modifying them, before all this health and safety bullshit, it sounds great.
Ford 302 (best engine ever IMHO, got one in a scimitar) in an old ford tractor sounds like a great idea to me, and then do some real work with it like these old boys did with thier mods.... cool.
@ yetisportisme you are having a (flathead exhaust ) pipe dream! NO serious farmer was putting a flatty V8 in his "working" tractor. It would only be a waste of money! A Flatty V8 would not do anymore work in this tractor than the original engine. it would only consume/ waste 3 times as much fuel. My grandad used these tractors extensively. He dumped the flatty 4s as soon as OHV came out as OHV was much better on fuel.
@KapteinOpel you obviously dont know much about farming or these tractors.
U think that flatV8 instantly gives the tractor more capabillity. It doesn't. When the OHV 4 came out it was enough more powerful that special oversize tires were needed to really make use that added power. This frame size was maxed out at that point. You can only go so fast on row crops anyway, you are supposed to leave a furrow, not a wake Thats why tractors get bigger (plows get wider) much more than faster!
@genexrollins The Ferguson principle is neatly thought out.. so much weight here and there, so big tires and a sufficient, economical engine. In reality a piece of art. If you used this V8 conversion for plowing you would only waste gas. But if its used in a mine for getting a heavy trailer up a hill fast it will clearly do more work. Or in heavy forestry pulling logs with halftracks.
Ford tractors never came with a V-8, they always had an inline 4 engine. There is a conversion called a "Funk Conversion Kit" that is incredibly rare, most V-8 conversions are home brewed.
Yes, a bone stock 8N will pull a 2-bottom plow, and has around 35-40 hp. Swapping in a flathead V8 doubled the hp to 96 (built stock for the era) and allowed it to pull a 3-bottom plow. Plus the V8 had more torque than the 4, and that makes a world of difference.

Ford did this conversion. I was around when this happened. Young people need to listen to those that were around when this happened.

@richardcwood1 I think that was a Funk Bros. conversion as thet also made a Ford OHV 6 conversion too in the late 40s, early 50s.

What a noise! I had a V8 pilot in the early 50s, it ran so smoothly I sometimes thought it had stalled at traffic lights. Different silencer I guess.

Not bad for an old Ford but I think one of the cylinders is missing spark

some early flat heads had duel points and if one set is not set right it sounds like its out of time--nice job--

@genexrollins Ok, so you dont use it for plowing. But the extra power may come in handy for certain other applications, like I said.

interersting. whats the point of the swap? did some farmers really need all that power?
