I'm no expert but its the forward motion of the wave as it breaks which drives the board in the same way that a surfer would. Now just wait for a bunch of technical replies to be added ;0)

@Josiebenn Windsurfers sail with the wind same theory as yacht or airplane. When they surf in the wave like this, they use both wave energy ( like normal surfers) and also wind power ( hidro-plaining ). To catch the large waves, they prefer side wind so that it is easier to go out and in. ( same as yacht, windsurfer cannot sail directly towards wind) If this is onshore, it is hard to catch this size surf as you have no help on wind power on the surf.

@Josiebenn There are few windsurfing spots in the world. The most famous one is Maui, Hawaii. They have constant trade-wind, people know witch beach will have side(or cross on/off) wind+surf. (total on/off shore is just harder to sail with waves) This movie is shot in north shore Maui witch have side wind and big surf. Though, not many people catch this monster surf! This is the big day. Only for very experienced windsurfers...

Naish always sailed with his emblematic red sails (couldn´t se if that transparent sail had some reddish tones). Bringdal is an even older sailor than Naish. Remakable he is still waving. Other great sailor was Pete Cabrinha.

The 80´s was a great time for wave sailing.
