Before I watch the video, I'd just like to say.... Fuck casuals. They are the majority of the MMO playerbase therefor devs justifiably cater to them, makes sense but I hope they all die. Still waiting for a demon souls MMO.
Comment on the server launch problem: I don't think GW2 will have that problem. I suspect that they would do the same as in GW1 district system. You can probably change server whenever you want. So if you are in server A and your friend is in server B and you want to play together, you can probably go to his server and join him or vice versa.
@Beaveriny This will not happen. The first guild wars was not a true MMO, but more a set of instanced zones. They have stated multiple times that GW2 will be a true MMO, and not instanced like GW1 (it will use instancing for specific areas like your personal story areas, but most of the game will be shared amongs all the players on a server).
We should hit on this subject again. I think a lot more can be said about the references to casual players and those who consider themselves hardcore.
One thing I am surprised you guys didn't talk about re: catering to hardcore vs casuals, is that people often don't know what it is that they actually want. They think they do, but often times (as psychologists and marketing will tell you) people will decide that they want something based on erroneous information, or based on community pressure, or simply don't fully understand the implications of the changes that they want.
I've read developers talking about 'interpreting' what players...
@MouseAndShiraz ... actually want. They may say X is broken and they want Y, but maybe Y would break something else. That doesn't mean X isn't broken, or that there isn't a Z issue behind the scenes that is causing problems.
This line of thinking is usually the cause of those patches where the entire community goes 'WHAT!! We've been complaining about X for months why would you ignore us and change Z instead of Y?!'
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Trial and error.
So, listened to this earlier, came back to send the link to a friend and decided to watch some of it. Was not expecting that voice out of the black guy.... =/
Unless you are making a brand new genre of competitive game (which doesn't happen anymore), you make the competitive scene as "hardcore" as possible. The game is then viewed as a challenge to competitive players from other games, and they migrate over to show their epic 1337 skillz. Casuals play no part in the competitive scene other than as viewers.
I don't know what I would consider myself after hearing this. I did think I was casual. But Now I think I may be something in-between? Perhaps not. I am very active in the GW1 and GW2 community. I have made suggestions on skill changes. Not for balance reasons though. But for flavor and fun reasons. Such as I made a necro suggestion a while ago seeing as I was sick of discordway and SS being the only thing ever used with a necro.
@LordLastDay I think it does. And I agree. Itwould be an interesting system. Some kind of 3D control swap system? Not sure. I certainly don't think it ought to remain turn based.

@MrDeatrich Yeah, me too. They feel like "single player MMOs" already, if that makes any sense.
