variations on seven eight time with most excellent improvisation, and sure why not sing tight verses and choruses over that, and write a song about itself, as a psychedelic vehicle. Bobby wrote the most complex and psychedelic tunes, road ready for Phil and Jerry. Count along in seven time right through this whole piece and you will learn a lot about that, as they accent the AND between the two and three, and again between the five and six, and then switching it up . Thanks guys, thanks Bobby.
Gee, you remember when the guys actually used to stand this close to each other? The Supplication jam was always one of my favorite moments at any show...the vocals disappeared, the crowd was suddenly quiet, the music started soft and got progressively louder, and it felt like there was a cool breeze wafting through the venue...magic moments!
@mcdstuff By the way I like NIN too. I noticed your nickname. I think NIN is a MUCH better band than Radiohead also. Ween. God Street Wine. Listen to those. Any band that must have the lead singers face up close in every single video is not strictly about the music.
@mcdstuff That's very surprising to me. Grateful Dead, virtuoso musicians who play all genres, in depth songwriting and extended jams (now the jams bore me but I loved it for a while). Then Radiohead, basically a band built around one person who really doesn't sound much different than an exceptional coffee house act. But that's the culture now. There goes the neighborhood.
@mcdstuff Why then if this band "Radiohead" is so great, must it always be justified. Oh but they're such nice guys. Some people find his voice extremely annoying (I know I am not alone on that). Radiohead is a band many feel they must mention to prove how open minded they are. I've noticed that. Not saying you, but I could care less who respects them, I don't.
@RikJamezBich People have to justify the Dead CONSTANTLY. "Have an open mind bro, the dead will grow on you" Actually, everyone knows that radiohead is fucking amazing. You just don't get it. Like all those people who dont 'get' the dead.
If jerry were alive, he would be a radiohead fan.
Radiohead and GD are my two favorite all time bands.
Give em another listen. They are the only band out right now keeping the candle burning for true music
@PrettyHateMachine88 I could care less, but the dead played everything from blues to folk to whatever. Musicians were generally much more proficient in the 70's era. Think what you want.
@mcdstuff The best out of what? Anyone can throw on some effects. I think the bar has become so low, anything decent is elevated to genius level. Thom Yorke is one of the most over rated musicians in history.
The band was ON in this era except Keith-he was phoning it in by this time, less than a year later replaced. Sorry to se Donna go but Brent brought sooooo much light he was inspiring-even to Jerry. Loved to watch Kingfish play this but the Dead was always on such a grander scale. Jerry tore up.
Greatest rock band of all time. Don't even go fooling yourself. Worst rockband of all time is a tie between Radiohead and oh wait, this was @ Duke. haha they're in for some tricks this season. Just wait for Gary Williams to get in a cold sweat.
Does anybody know what studio album lazy lightning was on originally?? Not that it really matters all the best versions are on the live recordings... but does anybody know where the tune originated??
@bobshenix Lazy Lightning/ Supplication were actually Kingfish songs that the Dead started to play live during the 76 tour. So it actually never appeared on a Dead studio album, but both songs are on the first Kingfish record, which is a studio recording.
Man, I disagree with all the self-appointed amateur critics, I found songs with Donna Jean singing the lead and she is really great, rich unique voice like janis Joplin, and a beautiful woman, she deserves Hall of Fame, but I think these punks should have let her sing a lot more instead of showboating, what a big waste, Bob's a hog, Jerry's a hog, they're all hogs, so I'm done, I'm outta here, I'm not a fan anymore
I drove down for this show from Hampton. There's an ancient cemetary near Cameron. Sat on a tombstone playing Friend Of The Devil with some new acquaintances :)
I saw many shows with Dona. My first show with brent was in 80. I missed hearing her voice, most people don't realize that they were so much more than Casey Jones and truckin.I loved and miss them so much. I did see ratdog this summer and it was just ok.
I'll never forget the first time I heard the Pembrook Pines version of this song! It was unlike anything I have ever heard! All of their 76-78 versions were great, but Pines and the Barton Hall version take you into outerspace! After listening to countless Dead shows from all periods of their career, I would agree with the other reviewer in saying this was their best peak. 5/7-8-9/77 was their creative peak and everything after that till 79 was supreme! I like the Travis Bean guitar better tho!
great thanks for posting this stuff. My favorite Dead era. Much as I loved the pigpen era, I think this was their creative peak and the tone of Garcia playing wolf was the best.
A very unique song, not just because it's the Dead doing it, but because it's a song one of the band members brought to the Dead as the result in him (Weir) being in another band (Kingfish) and his regular band (the Dead) took the song and brought it to a new level. Lazy Lightnin' was one of those songs that amped up the crowd. The segue between Lightnin' and Supplication represents what made the Dead stand alone without equals. 10 minutes of pure bliss! THANK YOU SBD for this!
or like wine, to really get drunk, you need a lot of it. The beautiful of the Grateful Dead cannot be appreciated by merely listening to one or two versions of a single song, let along just one or two songs of the Grateful Dead.
That was super cool. More please!
