As much as I like this version, The Monkees' version is a lot more interesting (particularly since they recorded it at a time when they had more artistic control over their music). I prefer psychedelic rock over straight garage rock, I guess.
Boyce & Hart wrote some of the most substantial hits for The Monkees -- Last Train to Clarksville, Stepping Stone etc. But The Leaves got ahold of this one first? That's odd. A few days ago stumbled across Boyce & Hart playing themselves on I Dream of Jeannie, of all things.

@marrrrrrks Good clue! I seem to recall Mickey's voice of the Monkees, who did a lot of Boyce-Hart songs. Thanks for reminding me of a great forgotten gem!
@marrrrrrks ps, just found the snappier, commercial Monkees version, which was a pleasant reminder (and the B-side to Pleasant Valley Sunday) but pale compared to this more passionate version. Which was first?
@marrrrrrks Boyce and Hart wrote alot of songs for the Monkees and others-they put out their own records too such as I Wonder What Shes Doing Tonight-a great song

@labambawatusi
no idea i thought this song was original to them,
actually looking at the cd, the song is credited to T.Boyce-B.Hart, if that helps
