  • so atmospheric al brilliant stuff. neillian

  • Very nice - thanks and don't apologize. I liked the visuals too.

  • I am amazed,. You have captured the spirit of that fantastic old recording. Beautiful tone (Johnny's original sounded like a parlour sized guitar0 with a much thinner sound. Fantastic job!

  • @milowagon

Thank you. I recorded this without amplification. I think Johnny's was recorded without an amp as well. It sounded that way to me.

Thanks again for listening and commenting.

    allen

  • Beautiful performance of a very lovely song.

  • @soulsistah100

    Thank you!

    allen

  • Lovely, lovely tune played very well, thank you. Wasn't that song written for a film by Peggy Lee and her guitarist husband?

    Anyway, great job

  • @clevblue,

    Peter,

Thank you for listening and your kind words. I updated my comment section to detail the facts of the song's origin.

Golden Earrings is a 1947 romantic spy film made by Paramount Pictures and starring Ray Milland and Marlene Dietrich. The film's haunting song, "Golden Earrings", sung in the movie by Murvyn Vye, was a hit recording in 1947-48 by Peggy Lee. (From Wikipedia)

    Cheers,

    allen

  • Not a bad version. Listen to someone sing it though. The phrasing of the melody could be a little clearer at points, It just becomes robato at a few parts where if your singing the words in your head you realise your kinda in the middle of a phrase. Great work tho, This is one of my fav arrangements to play.

  • @goldgretch

    Hi

Thanks for listening. I heard the great guitarist Johnny Smith play this arrangement many many years ago. Sometime in the early 70's. A few years ago I decided to have a go at his arrangement. I recorded the song without an amplifier as he did. If you have not heard Johnny play this, you should listen to how this arrangement SHOULD be played. I did not even come close.

    Thank you for commenting,

I am a huge fan of Johnny Smith. I see from your channel that you have favored a song or two from JS.

I have posted a few other "attempts" at playing his arrangements.

    Thanks again,

    allen

  • Hi Allen,

    Sensitive & powerful arrangement!

    Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you sir.

I recorded this without an amp. I like the acoustic timbre on a tune like this.

    Cheers,

    allen

  • Hi Allen,

I had to have a listen to this tune, as I know (you told me), it´s special to you. I didn´t know the tune, but let me say: it´s fantastic, a very nice playing, great chords, and suddenly I hear a fast Allen: wow. The harmonics at the end, the changes, all...

You play it with all your heart, wonderful!

    Of course all stars!

    Best wishes, Frank

  • Thank you Frank.

I decided to record this without an amplifier. This guitar has a nice tone for this type of song. Lots of open strings(a guitar's secret weapon).

Cheers my friend and thanks for listening,

    allen

  • AMIGO ALLEN:

    Fernando

  • Fernando,

Gracias por escucha. Tengo mucho respeto para tu musica. Tu es un jugador de guitarra excelente.Tu palabras son muy alentadoras. Nunca he oido la version por Wes Montgomery. Lo buscare.

    Tu amigo bueno.

    allen

  • This is Exellent. I've been trying to transcribing some of Johnny Smiths solo work, and all my attempts have been for null. Do you think you could possibly send some of your transcriptions my way? I'd love to add some more Johnny Smith to my repetoir.

  • I sent you a private message. Thanks for the compliment.

    Cheers,

    allen

  • This is Exceptional!!! I've listened to JS since I was a kid (I thank my Mom for that!),---and I got this album in 1967 when it came out. I learned "Yesterday" and a few other arrangements from this album but never got around to this one. You do a great job with it,---you really "get it".

  • Thanks man,

I bought this album when it first came out as well. I have transcribed several of his chord solos. I have posted a few more of my ATTEMPTS at playing his arrangements. I found a few to be a bit of a challenge but well worth the effort to learn.

Shoot me an email address and I will send them to you. No charge, I just want to spread the gospel of JS.

I included TAB along with standard notation.

Thank you for your kind words!

    Cheers,

    allen

  • I must agree here with Stephane, the runs come out beautiful in timing, and I also agree that the guitar has excellent acoustic tone with very good projection. thanks for sending this mighty fine performance. the tone is transparent yet thick,I like it very much and your playing very good here Alan, among your best work. Thanks for the explanation on your guitar, very interesting, greetings Vic.

  • Thanks Vic. Those are some very nice compliments.

When I started getting bored playing R&R (around 15-16) I began listening to Johnny Smith. His performances are very precise and clean and tasteful. His album "Moonlight in Vermont" blew me away and started me on a different path. I have never met the man but I have spoken with him a few times by phone. He is a most gracious gentleman, modest with a bit of self effacing humor. Very generous with his time and full of wonderful stories to share.

  • Allan,it's great that all players have their personal heros, like I was in love with Wes and Kenny Burrel also Grant Green(very Natural sounding players) They really inspired me tremendously especially the octave solo's of Wes, on my "So What" and "All Blues" I pay tribute to him playing Octave solos in that tradition. Great you spoke to Johnny, he's a great player, wish Wes was still Alive(sigh... ); Vic.

  • This is great. (I'm a student of Johnny Smith's student.

  • m00k

In my opinion, you are very fortunate indeed! I would love to have studied with JS or one of his students. He's the Man! I have posted a few other of my attempts at playing his arrangements. His stuff is not the easiest to play but it's worth the effort to learn I think.

    Cheers, allen

  • Oh, totally - my teacher is the best guitar play i know. Yeah, JS' songs are NOT easy to play haha. I struggle a lot with them.

  • Hang in there.

  • Bravo!!

  • Thank you Sir!

  • Nice arrangements! I am a fan of Johnny Smith too.

  • Thank you.

Johnny Smith to me is a real musician. One of if not the best of the 20th century. In addition to guitar, he plays violin, viola, piano, trumpet and coronet. I have trouble just playing a guitar let alone the other instruments. He can sight read anything.

    Thanks again for your comment,

    allen

  • Hi Dear Brother, I want to tell you that you are crazy to have been debated with yourself for along time...This piece is one of your better performance, perhaps the best...

When I hear it I feel you love this piece and you play it with energy and a great feeling...And the sound brother is Perfect...

    Stephane.

  • Thank you my Brother.

Siempre he sido intimidados por este arreglo musical. (I have always been intimidated by this musical arrangement).

    allen

  • sounds great to me - and I am fellow Johnny Smith fan - also love Maiden with Flaxen hair - been working on that for years - looking for a more readable arrangement - I could pdf you what i use to see if it's the same one - I understgand you moved it up a step

  • Thank you for the kind words. I actually moved it up a half step from Gb to G. Give me your email address and I will send you a PDF of the arrangement for both of these tunes.

  • Could you please send me the PDF arrangements too? This is just brilliant! I was just studying Wally's Waltz and this would be a perfect next piece.

  • Send me a personal message with you email address.

Thank you for the kind words.

    cheers,

    allen

  • I teach beginner guitar in the middle schools and I'm going have all my students listen to you as an example of beautiful solo guitar playing its so wonderful to hear you man!Is it possible to get a transcription of this stuff for my students.

  • First of all, thank you very much for the kind words. I can email several of these transcriptions to you. I have notated several in standard notation along with TAB. Shoot me a note with your email address and I will get the PDF out to you right away.

    Cheers and Thanks again!

    allen

  • Allen, I'm sorry but I didn't hear any clams in this at all. They must have been oysters because all I encountered were pearls all along the way. Man, I've got to be careful or you're going to send me back to the drawing board with this kind of playing. Just excellent. 5***** of course.

  • Thanks for the very kind words.

  • dude, u did u great job. i learned this thing a few years ago, and it sure ain't easy, but it is sure is worth it. guitar has a great timbre

  • Wow Thanks. It can be a real bitch.

I have a bunch of Johnny's solo arrangements transcribed in standard and tab if you want them. Shoot me a note with your email address and I will send them to you.

    allen.

  • That is beautiful! You play it with a lot of feeling. What kind of guitar are you using? Sounds great!

That guitar is a custom made guitar by Tom Ribbeke that needed it's strings changed :)

  • wow! you sound like segovia! i wouldn't think of tackling this one.Bravissimo!!!

  • I have never played it for any one except my poor suffering Wife. She will listen to anything. Thanks for the kind words.
