  • i dont think judy looks drunk or fidgety !!! shes a LEGEND, 40+ yrs after her death and she still touches so many hearts, there will never be another that even comes close to her! she`s the greatest singer, dancer, actress and comedian of all time, we love u judy <3 <3 <3 xx

  • Sadly, one can see she isn't at her best anymore, she's fidgety and her voice doesn't have her usual firmness. :( I actually think she might be a bit drunk on this, hence the mistakes. She died 5 years later.

  • @retrogaming She was not drunk ... at this stage in her life she only sipped liebfruamilch, and often just left the glasses untouched. She was being manipulated by the idiots at the network, and had just been working an extraordinarily long and heavy day (and week). Your throat would be rough, too, with all they were putting her through, stealing her money at the same time.

  • Great little video! Great stars, great music!

  • 美しい・・・

  • NOTHING LIKE THE MUSIC OF YESTERYEAR! SIMPLY THE GREATEST!

  • what talents!!!!!!!!!!! Beautiful!!!

  • Rainbows really know how to fly.

  • nice!

  • Love this, I have the show taped from the tv. Mel was the greatest.

  • Yes, I said that on another version of this same video yesterday--Judy does say 'rainbows' not 'Reindeer'!! Adlibbing is what she did and what's wrong with that--she's got the voice and it's her show anyway--she can pretty much do what she wants!! Go Judy!

  • @bozarts2 I think she may have messed up the words on purpose. She didn't care for him and used to call him Mel Torment.

  • What an awesome video- thanks so much for sharing Merry JESUSmas to all

  • love judy singing this!

  • This is beautiful...

  • Wonderful...

  • LOVE!!!!!!

  • Quality christmas music. Not like the drek they play on the radio.

  • Beautiful - thank you :-)

  • I love when Judy Garland sings "rainbows" instead of "reindeers"... old habits die hard!

  • this song in dubstep could be sick!!!

    want it!!

    thumbs up!

  • I think the "rainbows..." was deliberate...

  • Merry Christmas to ALL! <3 :) Kelmi

  • i didn't know that Mel Torme wrote this song! it's my favorite Christmas song

  • WTF is wrong with 6 people!

  • @jmkenola I second that! This is just so BEAUTIFUL so those 6 haters are just out of touch with real magic of Christmas.

  • I have post my own Christmas song/video!!

    youtube: TheNewageworldmusic

  • <3

  • クリスマスの幸せな情景が浮かぶ名曲♪

  • Oh, my Judy....you were so lost at the end, so fragile....

  • judy garland was amazin. true talent.

  • lol she did sing "to see if RAINBOWS really know how to fly"!

  • Wonderful!

  • <3

  • Mel Torme had a beautiful voice.

  • beutiful

  • @EarthquakeQueen64 it's the feeling. How do you not like,..Love this song?

  • mel torme's voice > everything.

  • Post this with the introduction by Garland!

  • I discovered Judy Garland in the middle 1990s on Turner Classic Movies. If I had been alive pre World War Two, I would have been looking for a happy, perky, lady just like Judy Garland to be my wife. :-) Merry Christmas Judy. Hope to see you in heaven.

  • Judy Garland is such an amazing singer, this song makes me so happy, gets that warm christmas feeling inside :)

  • wow...i really wish this was the time period i grew up in...i know it still had its problems but everything just seemed so much classier

  • Judy Garland has got rainbows on the brain!...it's reindeer, Dorothy...not rainbows. Damn you, Wizard of Oz...how did you manage to find your way into a The Christmas Song?

  • @vasaurus I mean The Christmas Song....without the Italian American accent...lol

  • @vasaurus she was joking!

  • now i know 6 people are idiots

  • They are ment for eachother

  • i think they messed up at 2:31

  • The great Mel Torme wrote this song. Here, looking like Mickey Rooney, he's Judy's TV musical adviser. Very talented guy. Judy muffs some lines ("close" jokes Torme who didn't think much of her professionalism).

  • @fflambeauutube Actually Mel Torme didn't write this song, Robert Wells did and Mel helped. The writing apparently took place on the hottest day Mel could remember during summer.

  • @trevora1126 I believe Torme wrote the music, and Wells the lyrics (in fact Torme said he contributed to the lyrics as well). If that's not correct, I'd be interested to read the true story if you have a source.

  • Greatest Christmas song written EVER! What lush harmonies! Thank God for Mel Torme's musical genius!

  • did Judy sing "to see if Rainbows really know how to fly" ? I think she did...hehe =)

  • @sketsielizard89 She sure did.lol

  • @sketsielizard89 Yes she did.

  • can't stop watching this!!!

  • The Fog!!!!! I'd kill little babies to have that voice!! I would!

  • they are like brother and sister

  • This song brings back wonderful memories! Thank you. Please email me any new on es. You have excellent taste!!

  • Judy Garland will ALWAYS be seen as the best above all else.

    THE GREATEST PERFORMER EVER!!!!!!!

  • lol aww I love it!!! *sigh* where's this kind of music?.. Nothing like it anymore...

  • The Velvet Fog! One of the greatest talents of our time...Also a wonderful Drummer,composer/arranger. Is, and always will be one of the best male jazz vocalists!

  • @weightfeather1 see I did not know that...I will try to order his book unless they do not deliver in this part of the world - it has happened and we are suppose to be a part of EU :) It is so frustrating loving and performing this type of a music when people here just do not get it...AAAAA :)

thanks very much for the answer :)

  • Doesn't get any better than this!

  • What a combination... They are both my favorites...did not know that she had him as a guest on her show...My god...not that I was born on the wrong part of the earth, I was born in the wrong times as well :)

thank you so much for the post

  • I'm a huge Mel fan. Just got given a CD of him singing Fred Astaire favourites this morning and subsequent binge of him on YouTube - plenty of favourite scats to transcribe for 2011. What a talent......

  • @jeaniebthe1

    me too

  • Some nice, and spontaneous, harmonizing there. Sweet.

  • The Velvet Fog. And Judy Garland. They don't make them like that anymore.

  • wow, that was great. too bad people at to busy watching lady gaga etc to see this.

  • 'Rainbows' Judy?.. really? hahaah good show. It's no wonder that Mel and Nat King Cole were buddies.. geniuses.

  • @DMob888333

Of course, for Judy "reindeer" became "rainbows..." Somewhere, over the "reindeer..." oops!!! It all makes appropriate sense.

  • @Doleafol hahah, nice!

  • REAL singers singing REAL songs! Other than maybe Josh Groban, who really has this kind of talent these days? Answer: nobody.

  • @ckaski I also love Tom Gaebel's version of this song. Roger Cicero is a great singer too.

  • Garland & Torme look and sound great...too bad nobody around today to compare and Judy is in full command!

  • Did Judy go a little bonkers? Or was that someone else?

  • Santa's not the only one who's loaded. :D Merry Christmas!

  • Comment removed

  • This is the second best version ever sung . Nat King Cole's version is the best and most well known version. And I am a huge Judy Fan!

  • I can't sing that high...what a fantastic tenor legend singer...MEL TORME!

  • One great thing about these shows is that not too long ago one could see this kind of talent each evening.

  • The Mel Tome and Judy Garland from 2010

Connie Talbot and Gavin Newman with The Cristmas Song

    (the worldstar and the amateur)

    watch?v=w9zngfoZuos

  • They hated each other. I love how Judy threw in "rainbows" after he corrected her. It was her way of reminding that hack that he was on HER show.

  • My God, Mel Torme... he just blows the mind. Back in the day when they didn't have no fake processing, auto tuning their real voices

Michael Buble a great voice, I've heard it. Then I heard him again on ITV 'an evening with' and it crapped all over his voice. He sounded part robot, played through a clear high-end system, with an artificial thickness to the voice

Anyone have a clue what I'm on about here? Cause all classics are sung & laid bare. I love warts.

You notice how twitchy JG was?

  • I'll take these two legends. warts and all, over the crap we now have...anyday !!

  • @anthonynj88 I second that.

  • @anthonynj88 So will I.

  • @anthonynj88 amen

  • @anthonynj88 and in 60 years thy'll say exactly the same about lady gaga and katy perry!

  • @amyyyamy BLASPHEMY!!!

  • Simply great

  • Too bad they obviously didn't practise this before performing.

  • @somegalfromcan Um- I think that it is rather obvious that they did given the fantastic harmonizing towards the end of the song. Stuff like that does not just come off the cuff.

  • @rms1163 Perhaps I should have said that they didn't practice enough. Professionals like them wouldn't have many problems coming up with harmonies - especially since he wrote the song and likely had some harmonies in mind which they might have practiced briefly. Having said that, Judy Garland made several mistakes with the words (not counting the rainbow reference) that made it seem as if she really didn't know the song very well.

  • Garland and Mel were "Characters" and would often put jokes in their music performances. I'd say that's more the Velvet Fog's style but what fun! I love Judy and Mel together on this piece.

  • I adore this so much!

  • thats talent right from when they were young can listen to this over and over again great

  • amphetamines. are. bad.

  • Judy was a very professional Entertainer. During her shows whenever she performed with anyone, you can see how confident she is because she always looks to her guests and is very generous with sharing the spotlight. Even here with Mel she is very giving in her way of letting her guest shine without a "Hey look at me!" posture. Even though she disliked Torme' she did what was best for the show.

  • Can we all put the Drunk & High comments to rest? None of us are perfect & we weren't there & we didnt know her & aren't we mature enough to know that we can't believe everything we read or hear? So much of Garland's life is based on hear say. Unless we were there & knew 1st hand, then we should NOT perpetuate the rumors that she was drunk & doped up. How can She do what she did if she were as drunk, high or sick as they say?Just enjoy her work & stop speaking ill of the dead.

  • No offense to anyone and no disrespect to Ms. Garland or Mr. Torme, but she probably said rainbow because she was drunk and/or high....

  • Why do you believe the rumors? Why bother watching her clips if this is the kind of remarks you are going to leave on this site? Even at our best we could achieve what Garland did. Until you can match your talent with her's then I think its time to stop bad mouthing this Great performer. I watch Judy clips because I love great talent and I dont worry if she was drunk or high and neither should you. We aren't here to judge others.

  • @redpepperlu Shut the Hell up. You have no proof so stop speculating.

  • @MetalPharoah I agree, these people who keep perpetuating these accusations should just shut up enjoy her body of work and if you can't enjoy it then don't watch these clips. It's all irrelevant now. She has been dead for over 41 yrs and we are lucky we have so much of this great lady's artistry available to us.To everyone who feels the need to keep traching her private life whether true or false, should be aware that even after 41 yrs she still gains new fans & her work still is untouchable!

  • He took it personally though in his book he trashed her and one of the things he claimed was that she did it on purpose but we know that's not true!

  • Best quality! thank you!

  • nice, how he realized just before the last note that he got himself into trouble and then found the detour down again...

  • can't everyone stop arguing about the supposed animosity between these two and listen to the beautiful music they are creating?

  • Thanks to nightcourt for remembering Mel...

  • heart warming!

  • Lovely harmony Mel

  • Lovely harmony

  • Judy Garland Show DVD set came w/the book "Rainbow's end" by S. Sanders & it told about The show, funny anecdotes, stories & about the CBS execs & about Judy. It wasnt the trash that Torme wrote about. The book's really a great read. I wouldn't wipe my dog's A*s w/Torme's nasty bio about Judy. I know Judy Garland wasn't perfect she was a human being w/flaws but she was very funny & very smart. She deserves more respect then always having ppl tallk about her addictions whenever her name's spoken.

  • Mel's nickname was the "Velvet Fog" He disliked Judy so much that she used to call him the "Velvet Frog" She had him replaced toward the end with Bobby Cole another user hitching his wagon to Judy's star" After Judy Died Torme' wrote a "scathing" book about Judy and the show his book was horrible and had many errors. he even got the date of Judy's death wrong" almost every Judy fan and author of her life and fam and friends of Judy said the book was 100% trash.

  • if rainbows really know how to fly?

  • Judy, bloopers: "He's load of lots of gifts and toys are in his sleigh"(1:30) ?? Then, "to see if RAINBOWS really know how to fly." Yea, I think she did that one on purpose to cover the blooper. I still love her!

  • @PuertoRicanPiper Mel was nasty to Judy so she "flubbed" the lyric on purpose because when introducing Mel Torme'she accidentally said "mort" & she quickly corrected it & said "Mel".She credited him for being responsible for all of her special material on the show" & that he wrote the one most beautiful xmas songs.Torme was miffed @ the name gaffe & always gaveJudy a hard time so when she flubbed the first time Mel said "close" as a jab,Judy used "rainbow" because mel was a jerk.

  • @hirchik: If I were as gifted and talented as Mel Torme I would probably be up my own ass too.

Actually, in the interviews with Mel I've heard and read, he is very warm, approachable, full of humour, and likeable.

  • She called him the "Velvet FROG" instead of his nick name the "Velvet fog" He gave her many problems while he was on the show always trying to upstage her and he wrote a very inaccurate bio on her right after her death. Which he got very important dates wrong including her death. So his Bio of her and their relationship was vicious and very innaccurate.

  • She doesn't look good, rail thin, probably hopped up on something. Mel can take credit for writing one of the all-time great holiday songs.....I don't think the "rainbows" was deliberate.

    Fun to watch.

  • Judy Garland can do "no wrong!" ^_^ Often times I felt the whole world had to stop & listen--everytime she performed!

  • I never liked Torme - he just comes across as smug and totally up his own ass.

  • @hirchik i agree he was too smug. He never understood the CBS was airing the Judy Garland Show and NOT the Mel Torme' show. Mel was very difficult to be around and work with. Judy deserved better I think Roger Edens show have been the one who was the Key man for all her "special material" and not Torme'. Judy worked best with Mort Lindsay, Roger Edens, Arthur Freed and the Freed unti and of course Kay Thompson.. CBS should have used those people so the pressure would be a lot less on her show.

  • @NFitalianGuy Mel was the musical director. He wrote a book about it.

  • wow! date?

  • mel was no slouch either

  • Comment removed

  • At this point they were enemies... just before this scene she studdered and named him "Mort"... She called him Mel "Torment" because he was a real heavy on the show... The following months he brought her to court and he was quick about writing a biography of her after her passing in 1969. It was hardly a tribute...

He was hired as a special arranger on the show but much too often was hard to locate... he also insisted on special guest appearances that surpassed contractual agreements...

  • One amazing fact about Mel Torme, one of the most underrated vocalists in modern American popular music: he co-wrote this song before he was 20. Classic.

  • If you love this clip and you're in Seattle, Open CIrcle Theater does a HILARIOUS send-up of the whole special every December. Definitely worth seeing! They even show the real special after the show.

  • @MargarettaL Really? That sounds AWESOME!! Do you have any details? I always loved the challenging "look of death" Judy gave Torme after he rudely pointed out her flub as she deliberately changed "Reindeer" to "Rainbows". He's damn lucky to have someone that talented allow him on her show. I'm excited to see the show in Seattle!!!

  • @stevers62 What nonsense - you must be delusional if you see Judy give Torme a "look of death"; she simply doesn't. Some people seem to relish the idea of feuds and back-stabbing. Sure, there were tensions within the production of the JGS, between artistes and the production team, and between artistes. It's also known as 'politics', and it happens wherever people are required to work as a company. Judy was under incredible pressure during the making of her TV series, but she ALWAYS delivered.

  • @hirchik I disagree with you calling me "delusional" because the look of annoyance is pretty obvious when Torme rudely pointed out the lyric flub. She wouldn't be human if she hadn't been annoyed, and one of the great things about her was that she was VERY human and warm. Having said that, we can completely agree that Judy ALWAYS delivered. She was an amazing talent and kind person. I also agree with you that Torme always comes across as smug.

  • @stevers62 Can we agree to disagree about Judy's "look"? :-)

  • This is absolutely wonderful! It's so sad that Judy Garland simply couldn't get the words right, but at least she's in tune. :)

  • Great !!!

  • Wow - to hear Torme fill in with humming such tight harmonies on the fly. Really a great ear and sense for not overpowering Garland.

  • Had the pleasure and honor of meeting Mel Torme in the 1970's....seemed like

    an authentically nice human being...

    Great, multifacited talent.!!!!

    in the 1970's

  • i.love.judy!

  • I had seen this before, and heard "to see if rainbows really know to fly", LOL, but it hard to imagine that she was obliviated as much as the legend tells as many songs she knew....i guess its all part of the Garland Mystique

  • Whoa!!! So nice... What a singer he was... A voice really nice to hear all day long... And she is Judy... She was brilliant too.

    JulyN

  • Wonderful!!......Pity Judy didn't get the words right but hey, she's only human!

  • Wow, what a gem this clip is. Beautifully sung.

  • thank god for you tube. this is priceless and so nice to see. there will never be another moment in time like this.

  • Is there a more natural talent than the Velvet Fog?

  • @ dwightkschrute80

I started reading "The Velvet Fog's" autobiography some time ago and mean to finish it. Mel's in a class by himself. And these are the Christmas programs I enjoy. The crap shown to day is .... empty?

  • Good God, did that woman ever NOT sound absolutely stunning? What a talent.

  • This ALWAYS cracks me up---Judy mixes up a couple of words, and Mel makes a snarky remark, and then Judy deliberately sings the wrong word---kind of like she's putting Mel in his place. Heh, heh, heh...

  • @theoctobercountry Yes, he should have been in awe just to be able to sing with Judy. I'm not sure if he was quite worthy to even be sitting next to her. She was so special!

  • Huh? Garland was great but Torme was also a great vocalist. get off the meth.

  • Exactly. I read Mel's auto-biography, and it seemed like Judy liked to tick him off ... and get a rise out of him

  • I recently read Mel's book "The Other Side of the Rainbow" and did not find it entirely negative about Garland. He's far more negative about his then wife "Snow White" than Judy.

  • Thank you for the video of the beautiful times.^^

  • I am find reading these comments even more interesting than the video.

  • This is a great part of the show. And a great song. Judy cracks me up when she says if rainbows really know how to fly. Dan

  • @tigerp233 Why thats stupid of her to say that. Makes no sense.

  • What a voice Mel had! I was lucky enough to see and listen to him on concert in Malmo, Sweden 1990.

  • he was called "The Velvet Fog" for good reason.

  • rainbows....completely intentional.

  • @joeypie88 Intentional? Why?

  • Intentional because those two couldn't stand each other and I think she most likely wanted him to know who was "running the show" so to speak.

  • To see if Rainbows really know how to fly... Intentional or Freudian slip? Or does it really matter? I don't think so. Love them both for what they have left us!!!

  • Mel was indeed nasty to her and was always trying to Steal a scene whenever they were together on the show. Even His book of Judy and the Garland show was inconsistant. He got her Death Date wrong and so many have debunked his book because they were there. She slapped him in line graciously. You don't correct a performer while singing a song when you have Millions of ppl watching. She was a class act so You can give all the thumbs down you like. Merry Christmas to all of you :) God Bless you!

  • While I believe Mel was a great singer, I am afraid I have to agree with you; his book "expose" that he wrote about Judy after her death was in very poor taste; he unapologetically tried to bash the character of an admittedly troubled woman who was entirely unable to defend herself against his slander.

  • she said rainbows really know how to fly, i awlways thought it was reindeer's i guess i was wrong

  • AWESOME TALENT!

  • A true masterpiece, stunning, beautiful, no words can describe how I feel about Judy Garland her spirit will live in my heart forever I will always love you Frances Ethel Gumm =) I love all her movies from The Wizard of Oz to Judgment at Nurenburg. =*)

  • Torme's comment very harmless and jovial, not mean spirited at all. He did however write a memoir of his time as musical director of Judy's show which rang of vengeance after the fact and was pretty bitter.

  • Great to hear the little sung verse - I wouldn't call Torme a prick or nasty - he wrote the song, and she is just butchering the lyric. These musicians are perfectionists, they presumably rehearse and they expect that the song is sung correctly.
