there is no hope in yesterday, the promise is broken and our children will pay for the interest we've earned without effort. It is not our fingers that shall be burnt. what you now see is only an illussion................
Yeah, there's a bit of a Springsteen feel, but I think it sounds even more like early 80s Billy Joel. If he'd written it, this song would've fit in perfectly on Billy's GLASS HOUSES or 52ND STREET album.
I agree it should've been a bigger hit. It was a minor AOR radio hit here in the U.S., but it disappeared too soon. I hadn't heard it in at least 20 yrs before today.
I really dig that cool descending part at 2:27 of the guitar solo. Anyone know who played the solo?
Well, we (who are here on the tube) know, obviously, but it should be regarded in the same way as the other rock staples of FM radio.
The problem might be that it's such an atypical song of theirs. There's nothing else in their catalogue that sounds remotely similar, and I don't think people expected them to write rock 'n roll. But Alan himself should have recognized it's potential.
When APP cranked it up they had a GREAT FUCKING ROCK 'N ROLL SOUND. Listen to "The Real World" from "Stereotomy" for another example - then Parsons and Woolfson could do songs like "Sirius/Eye In the Sky" and "Old and Wise" - they were so versatile.
hmmmm not one of my favourites. For me this band's classics are "Sirius", "Eye in the Sky" "Games People Play" "Time" "You don't Believe" "Old and Wise"
lovely solo

STRONG, APP song -- has the feel of Springsteen, but IMHO better executed!
Hard hitting, solid, fun rock. But, as usual the tune and the lyrics are nuanced.
This should have been #1 across the USA and EU!
