"Asian" is too general, as Indians (South Asians) and Chinese (East Asians) are both Asian but have obviously distinct appearances. So, "East Asian" is the best term to use. And I don't think that people intentionally meant Oriental in a bad way. It has a neutral connotation attached to it, as opposed to the word "Chink", which is extremely racist and the worst word you could possibly call an East Asian.
