i was in rehab 3 months ago for a heroin addiction and when i got out i was pretty upset and really torn, didnt know what to do. I stayed at my parents for a while and was really depressed...my mom played me this song, and i listened to it Over and Over again and it helped me so much. thank god for this song. Im 21 now, and ive been clean for 3 months. I love james taylor <3
@hellokittyjunkie12 I'm 59 and have been fighting heroin since 73. My only release came thru my Higher Power I call God. I suffered from "Terminal Coolness". But this time junk brought me to my bottom. I find much strength in 12 Step programs like A.A. + N.A. God's Peace be with you ONE DAY (24hrs) AT A TIME!!!
This is REAL music....if you listen to a song today and think "man...This beats any older music like that James Taylor crap"..Then i will say to you..."And you take how many milligrams of Paxil?"
People can say whatever they want about what I'm about to say. I make techno/electro-house. But I think that James Taylor is probably one of the reasons that music hasn't died out. He introduced free-will in music. That is one of the most important things in techno. He's the reason I make music. And I thank him so much for never giving up. Thank you.
@NotDuncan You see, when learning to finger-pick the guitar, there are certain dos and don'ts. There's a whole big ordeal with technique. James Taylor doesn't go by the rules when it comes to finger-picking. He has his own unique style that is very hard to learn.
@msthomas82176 I don't know what you said because you removed the comment but whatever it was I forgive you. I'm sure James Taylor would agree. You're saying you'd like to erase the comment and you've removed your comments. I don't know how much more could be asked of anyone..
1970. God. I remember playing this song at my guitar workshop graduation. I was 13. Since then I've seen too much fire, and it's rained far too much. But here I am, with memories I'll never forget. Thank you James. Thank you.
James Taylor has a way of touching your soul with his words and his music in a way so intimate and long-lasting that we all feel like we've known him our whole lives. Rock on Stringbean. :o)
In a BBC interview he said the song chronicled his experiences in mental institutions, such as his stay in McLean Hospital in Massachusetts as a senior in high school, and the suicide of a friend. The fire in the song refers to his shock therapy. Rain is the cold showers that follow shock therapy.
I friendship is a fragile thing. So hard to form, so easily broken. Never abuse what you fought so hard to gain. It can never be replaced, it cannot be duplicated. I am sorry baby girl.
speaks so well about my lost love. I was always hoping I could make up for the choices I made in the past, but alas, she told me to move on and forget about my hope of coming back with her. She claims she has found a new life and she is at peace. I can only wish her happiness.
I love this song. Compare it to Mockingbird with Carly Simon. I think of the opened eyes in F&R (JT's challenges are well documented elsewhere) compared to the free wheeling days of Mockingbird. It brings me hope of how things can work themselves out.
I remember buying 'Fire and Rain' on a vinyl single back in the early '70s. The flip side was a song titled "Anywhere Like Heaven"...which also is a great song. In spite of that, I've never really gotten used to the 'bald' James Taylor. But I'm balding too. I try to wear a hat as much as I can. Don't want anyone seeing my bald, naked head.
I have always thought it takes a special talent to pick up a guitar and accompany yourself singing a song without any backing. When you can do it to this standard, it's truly amazing. Not sure what anyone would find to dislike in this gentle and nostalgic piece.
Watching (listening) James Taylor takes away the fear of getting bald. Ofcourse this comment makes no sence in some way, but I truly want to point at the fact that as long as make use of your talent (and I'm sure everybody has), nobody cares about your small flaws you didn't choose for.
This song reminds me of a Summer spent on the Sardinian northern coast with my 3 sibs and 2 friends of theirs. We had 2 tapes of J.Taylor's songs(CDs were nowhere to be seen at that time). We'd play them over and over again,at all times, wherever we were. So,eventually, those songs became the "soundtrack "of that very special Summer.
I'll never forget it and whenever I hear any of those beautiful songs I jump back to that...incredible time. Thanks Mr.Taylor. Lei è parte della mia vita.
Having watched this video and then watching him sing this from 2008...it's amazing how he's changed in oh so many great ways...he smiles when he sings...with age and wisdom..it's just really been an awesome career for him and for us too
I was 5 yrs old when he sang this at this particular concert. My older siblings had all his records and I learned to sing many of his songs. Brings back a lot of memories
Timeless, brilliant and so full of emotion. Reminds me of my girlfriend that was killed in a car accident, her parents called me the next morning to tell me she was killed. Miss you Jackie :)
@rosenthallefty what kind of monkey idiot would ban this song after 9 11? are you serious? did that really happen? Its a freakin song about healing after tragedy
The book "Fire and Rain" says that he started writing this song after hearing about a friend who intentionally overdosed on pills. The second verse is about his heroin problems and methadone treatment. The third verse is about his breakdown just before and after his short-lived band.
I lost so many loved ones, so one day i asked GOD, why not me instead of them?....GOD replies....it's because you've "LOVED"so many and "LOST" loving "YOU"!.....
