First rule: if you have to use a mic to sing opera, especially Nessun Dorma, you don't have the instrument to sing opera. That said: this is horrible in so many ways.
I am always amazed that people will get into fights over a video or musician. Personally I like Russell Watson as well as Sarah Brightman, Andrea Bocelli and "OH MY GOD!!!" the East Village Opera Company and Bond. Classical Crossover is a viable and interesting musical genera which allows for exploration and in some cases, reinvention of the older music.
I also love the older opera singers and the modern classic singers (Some now dead). If you don't like it don't listen. If you do then enjoy.

Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
why is there a lot of people singing Nessun Dorma whithout thecnical voice??? This Aria its only for a professionals Opera Tenor's. The other people makes ridiculous trying to sing this good. Like this poor man...
@BERNARDOANUK Thank you, I was thinking the exact same thing haha. Really puts a sad mark on the great tenors; Domingo, Pavarotti, Bjorling and heck, even David Phelps was better than this guy...
@trfinck Not not... David Phelps destroys also this nice Aria. David's voice is very nice. Undoubtedly. But it changes color several times during the aria and does some sharp (it is not to sing is to shout) without harmonic. A disaster
@trfinck Not not... David Phelps destroys also this nice Aria. David's voice is very nice. Undoubtedly. But it changes color several times during the aria and does some sharp (it is not to sing is to shout) without harmonic. A disaster.
Have you listened to sing this Aria to the great Michael Bolton? At least Michael has the same color of voice during the whole aria. It is tolerable. Of the tolerable few ones.
Russell Watson is able to sing Nessun Dorma, CAN ANY OF YOU WHO ARE CRITISIZING HIM ??? I have listed to opera all my life and he is just himself, not trying to imitate anyone.
It is so interesting to me how does every guy who has naturaly high voice, and no vocal training at all, wants to sing Nessun dorma right away. Is there enyone who can explain to them that this is an aria for dramatic tenors with at least 10 years of serious operatic career??? Though, he has wonderful voice, but with this technique he is a pop singer... Nessun dorma is not for him, and this is not the way it should sound... I ment nothing offencive!!!
logicroxx..............I could not have put it better myself. Music is music, you can change / rearrange a song and it can be better than the original. Also modern artistes some classic swing era songs (i.e. Robbie Williams) suddenly all the young people are interested in that music. It can only be a good thing. I was in a rock band and the best crowd reaction we got was when we played Mack The Knife (penned in 1933)
The greatest insult is not his interpretation of the piece, but the musical snobbery that resides in petty youtube comments. Great artists are just that: artists. Creating for the sake of creating, and bringing joy to others that appreciate their work. If I want to do a polka version of Moonlight Sonata and it brings a smile to the face of just a single person, who are you to suggest it was in poor taste to do so? 110 people gave Russ a thumbs up, so show some class and let it be.
I agree removalman82! The way he sings this song is so incredibly moving--and this, after he nearly died of some very serious brain aneurism surgery.
I think he did a decent job though, as some here said, I didn't quite care for his posture. But a pleasing voice nonetheless. Nessun Dorma was meant for a tenor, but the one whose rendition will knock you out, is not even a tenor, its a female and whats amazing is that she is only 11 years old. Check out Jackie Evancho singing Nessun Dorma as a guest on Britain's Got Talent. Make sure to hold on to your jaw !!
wellits true that this performances isnt great...there is something in 2 or 3 miment where the phrasing isnt great i think...also he is a good singer but sounds too much of an effort for him to sing those tenor notes...

@ChirpyCanuck we all have ears, thus we can all judge music. This performance isn't just horrible, it's an insult to Puccini and all the great tenors who ever performed this wonderful piece. Sure, tastes are tastes, but c'mon there ought to be a limit to bad taste!
@WuWeiJack While he may not have the extremely rare vocal power of Pavoratti or the sweet tonality of Bocelli ... this is still an excellent performance despite some's obnoxious claims here.
@Apollogranforte People are forgetting that at this point he was seriously ill and was unaware. He's done well to still be stood up never mind singing, give the lad a break.
@barclayprem I will not buy that. He is one of the new generation of pop singers who discovered that opera exists and they think they can sing it, forgetting they do not have either the voice, the musicality or the vocal training required to perform it! Typical examples of this, are Bocelli, Michael Bolton, Watson, Sarah Brightman and Paul Potts, Why, even Aretha Franklin had a go at murdering Puccini's immortal music. Shame on them!!!
@Apollogranforte You are absolutely right. I have nothing against any of the singers you mentioned but with the excuse of bringing opera to the masses they do murder operatic arias in the most insulting way in relation to what the author intended. But those are today's singers... Assasination of Puccini at their best! In this case particulary, even Bolton's rendition is better...LOL...
woah, bocelli is a great opera talent, and to be fair, paul potts only got to being aa 'pop singer' by singing opera from the start. that's what he always sang.
@barclayprem I have to agree...I think he did great. Maybe everyone should stop being so judgmental and give someone credit for what they CAN do instead of what they CANNOT do... Pavarotti set the bar very high. I was privileged to see one of Pavarotti's concerts before his passing and he was unable to sing Nessun Dorma...those high notes are difficult. I say Kudos to Russell.
@Apollogranforte While he may not have the extremely rare vocal power of Pavoratti or the sweet tonality of Bocelli ... this is still an excellent performance despite some's obnoxious claims here.
Rubbish performance. Totally. No emotion, more than horribly mistaken pronunciation, feeble voice, creepy facial muscles. Please, PLEASE do yourself a favor by listening to one of the greatest tenors of the world performing a real "Nessun dorma" (i.e. Franco Corelli): youtube.com/watch?v=uUkTKAg7HHM
@WuWeiJack shame on you for not seeing the incredible talent and vocal range in this untrained singer..making fun of his facial muscles and proninciation. you are a typical american mindless critical moron. you're comparing Russell Watson with what you term the "greatest tenor..Franco Corelli"....what? what? this is untrained my friend, i i must say, he's giving an outstanding performance . Calling this rubbish is calling yourself trash!
@buffedtrainer1 I'm an American and I love Russell Watson. I have since I was a little girl. His voice is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. I love him above Pavarotti and sometimes, even Andrea Bocelli. (And many others.) But please don't throw all of us Americans into the same category. I will agree, though, that the majority of Americans do not appreciate classical music. None of my friends like the same music I do. I wish Mario Frangoulis or Russell Watson would come to the States.
@buffedtrainer1 i'm sorry but you need to hear more often Pavarotti singing this music... Russel may be a good singer, but this isn't the best music for him to sing... Even Paul Pots sings "Nessun Dorma" better than him!!! Even i sing this better than him!!!
@buffedtrainer1 I'm sorry to disappoint you but I'm not american (and I don't understand why being american would make me "a mindless critical moron"). I am italian, so I know VERY WELL how this should be spoken AND singed. Your "incredibibly talented singer" is just turning this wonderful masterpiece into rubbish. Instead of calling other people trash, like you did call me, you should really listen to Franco Corelli or Pavarotti singing. This guys should simply stop pretending to be a tenor.
Everyone should make it a point to understand that Russell has contributed to bring the opera to the mainstream and not to just a select audience. He is also not an Italian and you can't expect someone who is not familiar with the language to sound absolutely perfect. He has made a beautiful attempt which is admirable considering.
I think people should stop comparing singers :P I think he did a fine job singing this song! hell he hasnt had professional training to sing, so i think he is great! to be able to do this!
Personally, I think his voice has actually improved - and he never claimed to be an 'opera' singer, he said in an interview that "Seven years ago classical crossover didn't exist – putting Italian lyrics to pop songs in a big ballsy way. Now every bugger's doing it. I've transcended all that bickering and bitching." Quoted right from Wikipedia so it must be right! The man battled cancer for God's sake, he deserves more respect than this.
@rabble2305 It isn't a song. It's an aria for tenor voice from the opera, Turandot. I agree that it's terrible though. Watson once had some promise as a singer, but he has clearly damaged his voice.
I think people say they don't like opera beause it's beyond thier grasp and they don't want to admit it, not because they think it is terrible. Russell Watson is good at bringing opera down to a level that everyday people can relate to, he's like a stepping stone between the music.
@kidsandcartoons2 He may be a stepping stone, but only if people go on to listen to real opera singers and then to listen to complete opera recordings and then on to live performances in opera houses. If people will listen to other singers, they will hear the difference between popera performers like Watson and real opera singers.
@BensonSra shame on you. isn't it easier and feel better to praise than to critize. he's english with classical training, cut him a break, but then again, you probably are hard on yourself too.
@removalman82 You need to listen to his voice before he had throat surgery, and then brain surgery-moron! He has come a long way since all of that---he doesn't have the stamina back yet---but you can hear the training.
I love this Guy from Lancashire. To my mind he is the greatest Tenor who ever lived. And thank god he Recovered from his Head problems, To perform again for us. Thanks from one Lancashire boy to another. TOM in Spain
Apologies, you misunderstand my comments, partly my fault for leaving out the question mark after the first sentence. Watson is not average, he is poor. Agree about Bjorling but prefer Corelli or del Monaco as Calaf. I know Bjorling considered himself a spinto but I can't see it, definitely a lyric tenor in my book.
I love this song and his voice. However, as far as I know, you can hit longer notes if you hold your head up straight, which he wasn't doing. That makes Russ a bad ass :S

I think people say they don't like opera beause it's beyond thier grasp and they don't want to admit it, not because they think it is terrible. Russell Watson is good at bringing opera down to a level that everyday people can relate to, he's like a stepping stone between the music.
kidsandcartoons2 1 year ago
@kidsandcartoons2 He may be a stepping stone, but only if people go on to listen to real opera singers and then to listen to complete opera recordings and then on to live performances in opera houses. If people will listen to other singers, they will hear the difference between popera performers like Watson and real opera singers.

Do you hate Puccini, Russell?

@BensonSra shame on you. isn't it easier and feel better to praise than to critize. he's english with classical training, cut him a break, but then again, you probably are hard on yourself too.

@removalman82 You need to listen to his voice before he had throat surgery, and then brain surgery-moron! He has come a long way since all of that---he doesn't have the stamina back yet---but you can hear the training.

Greatest tenor ever. Are you on crack cocaine or do you just hate music?
LOperaSeria 1 year ago 13
@LOperaSeria He's average at best. Listen to Jussi Bjorling sing this and I hope to God you'll recognise the difference between great and average.

@MasterIsh91

@LOperaSeria man the greatest tenor of all the times is luciano pavarotti
