the thing burr is talking about has actually been in the works for a while and uses rfid technology (relatively cheap, metal 'antennae' that distort radio waves).
one of the design benefits of rfid chips is that you don't need to hold it up to a scanner, which allows registered persons to load up a bag of groceries and walk out the door with them without having to deal with a checkout guy OR with a machine; the groceries will be automatically billed to that person's account.
