@Guerillaradio13 MTV has NEVER been about the music, fools! Q: How do you NEED visuals to make music good? A: If your music is so shit it can't stand on its own. A lot of bands NEED MTV and similar shit. Real bands don't, they tour and graft, MTV is useful, but fuck MTV, it causes more problems than it solves, trust me. (or let's hear your argument).
I remember going to see Downset play at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit. So pumped up for the show, and then right during the 1st song, the whole band stops and starts yelling at me and my friends for SLAM DANCING too hard. Shoot, if I wanted to ska dance I would have went and seen Murphey's Law. Totally ruined the show for me. DETROIT CITY ROCKS
this band among a couple of others actually nailed the rap./rock thing. the list of failureswould be way too long for youtube. bang this shit loud!!!!!
ha ha..remember this from when i was young..good track, saw em live in UK around 96.. not that it really matters, but i remember wondering how much their lyrics reflected their reality? just like the stuff about 'true blue motherfucker, about 4 generations deep' and sets, signs n nines,, n his pop getting killed by LAPD.. just out of interest, any ideas?
thanks for the reply,,you've cleared up somethin i used to wonder when i was a kid before the internet could answer all my questions! Yeah i got the references to Florence and Normandie, and the Rodney King beating/not gulity verdict. it was that kind of stuff that made me wonder whether it was just for image (like a few bands/rappers i could mention..)
Yeah, I knew Social Ray in the early 90s when he worked for a local LA artist and I was SxE and into his other band. We used to ride the same bus line to work/school and I went to Downset's first show ever. Downset had a VERY legit gang following in LA and were tight with members of CBS (Can't be Stopped) among others. Ray hated Rage against the machine and Zack DeLa Rocha because they were fake and only talked about knowing about gang culture. Ray was very legit and hung with bangers.
Relates very closely to the lead singers life. Ray's father was killed by the Los Angeles Police Dept. In the song ANGER he talks more about it. In Rape ritual he speaks about his sister being raped as well, most of the songs do carry a deep personal meaning to them. That is the main reason they never went mainstream, they refused to modify their music for anyone.
He is my older cousin not that it really matters to your question LOL
seen and met these guys at a small as club in 94 or 95, cant remember. they were touring with orange 9mm and deftones. awesome show, the singer handed me the mic during "anger" was fucking awesome.
RATM were only okay; I was into them for a while, but the preachy stuff got on my nerves after a while. I bought Evil Empire the day it debuted, however.
Ah, you have SJ videos??? God, i wanna see that...long time ago i asked Rey Oropeza for that but he didn't answered about that. Although he promised me a SJ interview, but 'till now nothing happened. So you were playing drum in SJ from the beginning or at the last Ep'?
huhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa thats a true favorite of mine from back in the days, dude very special THX for postin this, i saw them live in the Netherlands in the club Dornrösje in Nijmegen, dude we were able to smoke weet at the concert, becaus they had a coffeshop right in this Motherfucker, just a great evening!!!
I love these guys, its been awhile since I last heard them. This shit reminds me of my senior year in high school.

Rey Oropeza's father was shot down in a shootout with the LAPD
They grew up in South Central LA
Anger at least has many references to the Los Angeles Riots in '92 which was rooted in South Central (intersection of florence and normandie)
Remember Rodney King
