beautiful. I don't want to seem contentious, but while Judy and Bette do fine jobs, a little unknown voice named Nanci Griffith puts more into this song that any. sorry guys.
I'm stil on the fence trying to decide whose version of "From A Distance" I like better, Bette Midler's or Nanci Griffith's. This version can't compete with either. Midler sings with great power, and Griffith sings with heart rending passion. This almost put me to sleep. I love Judy Collins, but this song just isn't for her.
I agree. I love Judy Collins; often she interprets songs that make you see them in a new way (Yeats Song of Wandering Aengus, as a prime example). The lyrics to this song can sound sappy without the passion of a Midler or the pathos of a Griffin.
I've always loved this song. First heard it down by some permutation of "The Byrds" - they sounded great, too. No one sings like Judy, IMHO. I know why Stephen Stills wrote his great "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes." He was a lucky man to spend time with her. Now, if only anyone, someone, would put her "Innisfree" up here... It's a poem by W.B. Yeats and Judy gave it a great melody backed up by piano. It's a spiritual experience just to hear it.
I met her in Phoenix, AZ sometime back during the 90s--A good friend of mine, his mother and myself went to see a Donovan concert at a place called The Celebrity Theatre, a closed-in venue that brings you close to your favorite artists--Judy opened for him and she did a wonderful job, especially with "Send In The Clowns"...Trust me that there wasn't a dry eye in the house that night!--Also Donovan did a song request for me as well so we were truly blessed...
Thank you for sharing this very moving rendition of what is becoming a timeless song (in an unforunate way perhaps). Interesting lyric changes: Do you have any background on time / place of the performance?
wouldn't it be nice if it looked this way when you w ere up close?

Have you heard "the Byrds" performance of this. They are right at the top of the list. Their arrangement is very good

Bette Midler or Sir Cliff Richard any day! that is such a boring performance - totally lacks feeling & soul!

bette can't sing live. bette has sung at least 20 songs AFTER judy recorded them, so she must not be too bored

Don't get me wrong - I'm a big fan of Judy's, but to me she makes the song sound boring on this rendition - Nanci's version is far better

I love Judy Collins and her voice... but I'll say that I prefer the composer's rendition on one of the Four Bitchin' Babes albums...

Excellent!! She has a nice style but I prefer Bette Middler doing this probably for the big sounding arrangement.

I think it might come from the 1993 The Best of Judy Collins. Excellent ! Great thanks !
It reminds me of the other great song sung by Pete Seeger "From way up here".

This is from a PBS special. I believe it was from Lincoln Center in New York. I would guess it was late 80's/early 90's
