Djele Lankandia Cissoko passed away on January 11, 2012. The man was just as his music - pure goodness. He will remembered by the many who's lives he touched.
Interesting, i have to say I dont really associate african culture with anything particularly harmonious or peaceful sounding but this pretty easy going.
why cant ppl just listen to the music?! all this nationalism and ethnicity promoting and bashing is ruining the mood of the music. Aint it just so political?! society brainwashes kids too efficiently, no wonder we need to cool ourselves down with music so often ¬.¬
I am very glad to discover such a sophisticated and beautiful instrument which, nevertheless, retains all the simple and profound human emotions of the wonderful culture it comes from. Thank you very much, Lankandia Cissoko. I love your playing and singing. (Particularly when you hit 1:40. SO beautiful!)
Just heard him in the Union Square subway station in NYC. I choked up at his clear and loud high tenor- wow, what incongruity- Irreverent travelers and healing sounds... NYC at it's coolest. Amen!
For a school project I was assigned to look up videos of "griots" on youtube..crazy assignment, but I'm so glad I got it because I would have never listened to this remarkable music without it.
There few people who can play this instrument. And with the same sounds as it was back in my ancestors day. glad to hear this sound once again.i have only heared it in old movies, happy to see it on utube
Actually, the sound has evolved tremendously in the last several decades due largely in part to the advent of using fishing line instead of gut strings. The instrument is able to stay in tune much better now. Also, the influence of the modern generation of kora masters has progressed this music tremendously. Abaraka baki, djeliba~
I-laful! To think my ancestors were playing this beautiful music, hundreds of years ago, and I am just discovering it! I am so proud that despite being torn from my roots through slavery, I have come full circle to fulljoy!!
Actually anyone who was involved in the slave trade have a high probability of being related to any of these people of west africa. A large majority was taken from there.
That being put aside he is obviously African and that is more then enough right there.
@1jaq you just HAD to bring that up didn't you? newsflash. 1. you're typing english so i assume you're american, in which case YOU'VE never been a slave and therefore YOU were never torn from your roots. and 2. your beloved 'roots' sold your ancestors into slavery in the first place. You weren't 'torn' from anything, where you are now, where you were born, the melting pot, THESE ARE YOUR ROOTS. try choosing your words next time you want to complain about something that never happened to you.
i just want to inform someone of the facts who has obviously been brought up in a biased, hateful state, as were you. Excuse me for being offended by your racism.
@Facemelter2000 What was "biased" about anything he said? He spoke the truth. Obviously you are the racist here. You even took the initiative to mention the whole "your own people sold you into slavery" thing you racist white folks love to peddle around.
Blacks dont give a shit about white americans "discovering" and/or celebrating their european heritage. You dont see us on your videos , but you love to come to ours and start arguments, why?
@BlacknesUnforgivable First of all, if your going to try to quote me, do it right instead of trying to make me out to be racist. secondly, obviously he is biased, otherwise 1. he wouldn't have pretended as if he was 'torn' from anything at all, 2. he wouldn't have brought up such an ill placed argument.
i didn't come here looking for an argument. but i DID come here to study music, only to find a group of ignorant, racist people who jump to nasty conclusions in a desperate act of self defense
so, he is biased because he said that he was "torn from his roots through slavery",despite common sense that what he said was true?Africans were taken here and had their culture and knowledge of self destroyed by their white slave masters, how is that statement indicative of being "biased"?
@BlacknesUnforgivable Yes. Africans 300+ years ago were torn from their roots. HE has not been torn from shit. But nevertheless, black youth have been raised in a culture to believe that they deserve something special; as if they could even comprehend slavery or what it entails. Thus, they have been trained to bitch and moan by a a fucked up, biased, ignorant culture that can't see past the 300 year old chains long enough to realize that we're all given an equal fucking chance. BIAS, sir.
@Facemelter2000 American culture, is not our culture, sorry.Americans in general , look to the land of their forefathers, you know, their heritage?Whites, look to ireland, italy, poland, germany, england, etc etc. If you were to ask an average white american, what he "is", he will say irish, italian, etc etc , he will not just say "white"
Black americans being the descendants of slaves, dont have that luxury , so yes black americans descending from people who lost their culture, are/were torn from their
@BlacknesUnforgivable is polish. you have no right to complain about it, but you've been raised in a culture to believe that you deserve something. just get over yourself.
@BlacknesUnforgivable Have you even read my comments? it's seems as if your hatred of white people has made you immune to common sense.....
once again, If you are American, then whether you fucking like it or not, this is OUR CULTURE. it's as if you've never heard of the melting pot, while your standing right in the middle of it. You complaining about being torn from your 'roots', as you call them, would be like me bitching about the fact that i wasn't born in poland just because my last name
@Facemelter2000 Hey strupid ass, americans have no culture. In case you are not aware, american "culture" is made up primarily of cultures of people who immigrate here.Mcdonalds? Is that culture?LOL nothing unique in america that they dont have the world over
Again , i know you whites cant resist a racial argument but please leave blacks alone and dont start arguments on their videos
@BlacknesUnforgivable typical ignorant response from someone who's never left their cave. of course our culture is made up of immigrants.... if you really want to trace back time, then almost ALL cultures developed due to immigration (that's obvious), but you wouldn't factor that in would you. Have you ever even been to another country? England? Poland? France? Italy? Spain? Switzerland? Germany? Austria maybe? no i didn't think so, but if you had, you could see that we are most definitely,
@BlacknesUnforgivable positively, our own culture. We have different styles of music, humor, dialect, art, ethical standards, food, problems; virtually everything that defines a culture. It's all DIFFERENT in america. if that's not a culture, than i don't know what is.
@BlacknesUnforgivable you continuously prove yourself to be a hypocrite. how can you blatantly call me racist, when i have yet to make ONE racist remark. However, the only reason you can conjure as to why i might be wrong is because i'm white. check and mate.
Wrong in each and every way. If Africans were torn from their culture 300 years ago, at which point were they rejoined with it? Any answer for that? Secondly, just because you say black youth "have been trained to bitch and moan by a fucked up ignorant culture that can't see past 300 year old chains", doesn't mean it's true. Thats your very own "fucked up ignorant culture" talking out of it's ass. Black people don't need to go back 300 years to see inequality today.
well, if a civilization is too isolated and thus its music, the cultural "protection" can sometimes turn into artistic incest. Progress is achieved by interbreeding, change, mutations, new challenges...blablabla.
As Mahler said: Tradition is not worhshipping the ashes but keeping the flame alive.
So incredibly beautiful!...thank you for sharing this gift that comes through you and for uplifting the hearts who hear you. May your Blessings multiply...
I love West African music, especially the Kora. I'm so glad there are still griots out there and even better they're comercially viable enough to warrant having a record contract. Thanks for posting this!
For all who may be interested in owning one of these beautiful instruments , we have koras, bolons and xalams for sale at our ebay store (just search kora in ebay) , check our feedback for reaction to buy in confidence.Cheers! Nick and Fatou
