Neither could act worth a damn so it didn't really matter. Couldn't handle any type of dialogue so the writers used Carrie as mostly as a prop.

As The twins got older in LHOTP you could tell a difference believe it or not the teeth showed the difference as One twin has a slight gap in her front teeth the other twin did not ,,Some twins teeth never grow the same lol

but in season 5 carrie is like just as old as laura in season 1, so they don't need to switch all the time, right?

@LiovaElise Yes, when the twins got older they didn't switch quite as much. I heard that sometimes just one of them woud do an entire episode alone. But they still shared the part up until they left the show. I'm not sure if Carrie was quite that old in season 5 though...she seemed to act younger than Laura did in season 1. Plus the GB twins were 8 during season 5, and Melissa Gilbert was 10 in season 1. I'm not really sure though, they never really say how old everyone is supposed to be.

I can tell them apart! But not season 1-2, They look so same. Season 3- kinda easy then season 4-6, very easy. Lindsay is more Carrie in season 6. Season 7-8 are easy too. They are adorable twins on the prairie.

In season one, it's confusing. Flash foward to 3-8 You certainly, tell them apart. Sidney, had the killerest smile. Lindsay's seemed ok, that's my opinion.

Thanks! Well, I'll go ahead and tell you the secret then lol. Sidney has a space between her two front teeth and Lindsay doesn't. I never noticed that though until Sidney mentioned it in an interview. It was cool to find out that there was a way to tell which one it was. :)
