And long before, only the royal household of the Maranao tribe can dance this. The only thing wrong about this dance is, the mighty prince should come out first before the graceful princess. And the dance should be accompanied by the kulintang instrument and gongs.
Ka singkil is a muslim dance. I am a maranao myself. Those caps worn by the bamboo holders or the servants are called "tutub" in maranao. Tutub is used for praying in the mosque. Before the Spaniards came to the Philippines, the country was an Islamic country, that's why most of the people in Mindanao are muslims, because the Spaniards always gets defeated by the forces of our sultans in Mindanao. And the clothes worn by the dancers aren't from India's influence. It came from the Malaysians.
@kverame from the very behginning ther e is no singkil dance..the dance was just invented by bayanihan..the singkils root is ka singkil meaning an honor..so what ever the interpretation..its qualaified . to the fact the first singkil dance , cloth was used instead of bamboo.." ramon obusan..says that on his lectures..
@elenavlada Pre-colonial philippines wasn't just tribes you know... we amassed actual empires, this is southern philippines who fortunately conserved their culture, while Luzon my other half has to face cultural deprivaty :(
@ThtOnePinoy I DID NOT ASK ANY OF THE BULLSHIT.. keep thos facts to yourself.. my concern is PANTS are not filipino, the ubrella girl was terrible! to renact sucha cnservative islam culture
@elenavlada wow you're acting like a jackass. Actually research into filipino culture, my culture, before you're making assumptions such as that, US FILIPINOS DID INFACT WORE PANTS, BUT THEY ARE OF COURSE DIFFERENT, just like the chiense and japanese wore similar pant-style cloth, so did we. Oh and this isn't a muslim dance, just because it's from around mindanao doesn't mean crap.
@elenavlada being islam, has nothing to do with the dance.. u missed them as being maranaos, before they became muslims they were already dancing the singkil...mag research ka hija. o baka gusto mo pag aralin kita ang muslim culture ako mag babayad..okey ang
@elenavlada bo bo! eto sabi mo o ......DID NOT ASK ANY OF THE BULLSHIT.. keep thos facts to yourself.. my concern is PANTS are not filipino, the umbrella girl was terrible! to renact sucha cnservative islam culture...yan ang sinabe mo bobo...theres nothing wrong with her moves since the dance is ballet... the umbrella is called kakulanagan and it is a maranao umbrella. the pants is called sawal..cguro sa bobo ka talaga o sanay ka lang sa muslim dance na turo ng mga bakla sa tabi tabi..
A horrible out of context performance of singkil where fan girls are replaced by umbrella girls and a even 'touching the princess' then this ballet mix add it all up and there's no standard whatsoever. Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company used to be the best many years ago.
@hetismij21 you maybe right about your concern for the contextual aspect of the performance. It is of utmost importance that this is preserved. Effort and resources should be allocated so that the cultural aspect is researched, documented and entrenched in the choreography. Nevertheless, I have to disagree with your comment on performance quality.
This awesome, very creative but the original steps are still there. The overall presentation is excellent and not boring. Congratulations to the director for this wonderful, artful and very innovative performance.
singkil is not a muslim dance , not all members of maranao tribe is muslim.before the muslim messionarys came here in philippines there already have maranao tribe and some of muslim the muslim messionrys teach the members of maranao tribe about allah's life that why several of members of maranao tribe today are muslim.
That's like comparing apples to pears and it's a false 'non sequitur' statement as if saying that tinikling or singkil presents any religious significance. you may argue that the origins of the dances come from two different areas of the philippines whereas one is 'spanish-influenced and the other coming from a region where Islam is prevalent. One should be extremely careful stating that singkil is a Muslim dance. One should be able to separate religion from culture.
of all the singkil dance I've seen here in "youtube" this is best among the rest I mean there the greatest ever!! the execution was almost perfect so as the choreography!! I can see that theres dificulty and I would say it's very dynamic. for me its the modern way of dancing singkil. congrats!!
im sorry but sa version na to, d ko talga gusto. lalo na yang routine at pivot ng prince :( im sorry but the prince looks like ballet dancer lol. i cant feel that he is a prince the way he dance..
Great dance. My favorite dance out of ALL dances of the world. It is considered to be the best Muslim dance out of all of the world. Singkil won FIRST PLACE in a world folk dance competition in Georgia, the state. I hope everybody stranded from the typhoon there in the Philippines are okay! :D
oo nga iyyanah.. ginaya nmin to nung linggo ng wika nmin! 1 week namin to pinraktis tas natalo lang kami ng mga first year! dahil daw isa lng dapat ang taga payong tas ung reyna lng ung nagbbamboo!! nkkasr!! ang gnda gnda kya ng version n to.. 58 lng score nmin over 100 san kapa
anung isa naka payong. grabee nman.!! grabee nman. cnyw nmin to wla nmang problema. :] standing ovation. lol joke. clap lng. pewo bat ganun. o_e. Isa lng taga payong!? wla ngang problema samin lahat nakapayong except si prinsesa , hari at kawayan boys.!!
The Filipino Student Association at UF used to dance the singkil, thanks to my mom who taught these dances. My mom was half-moro, and she grew up in Basilan Mindanao. So she grew up first hand dancing this. It's funny how many fil-ams want to learn the spanish-influenced dances, but it was this dance that won us all our trophies back in the day.
Now I understand why my mom doesn't say she is a pinay...she says she is a Maranao.
they have an unhique way of dancing the singkil but the taught is there instead of using fan they used ubrella but actually only one should bring an umbrella
Xtianity was use as oppression/slavery tool by old spain, erase culture in philipine, mexico etc. Islam gave idea to resist/preserve culture/land, which would you choose? have you heard of Sultanate of Manila. they were massacred by old spain, they are one who resist bastardazation of the country. thres no such race as Filipino, you are malays, you are descendants of sultans and are free people. old spain put hatred w/ muslims so u fight their war in mindanao, wat did u get? go back to Islam.
weeeeeeeee........ you talking about our ancestors....not us....weheheh we have our way of living now. and not all Filipinos are catholic christians.....like me...lol
I'am too a performer and a choreographer, I really love the dance...because its a beautiful contemporary of both traditional and classical dances...but I think whats happening here is incongruence too cultural outlooks...its called singkil because of the poles...it means entanglement, nabitik, the Princess should not be touched because its a courtship dance...well take it as constructive criticism
sad....but beautifull....unta walay mo tira nga muslim ani.....hahaha.....just dont perform it in their area i guess....you might get your head cut....;)
its not allowed to carry women like that...its a sacred dance..and the one dancing is represented as the princess..royalty..and im sure is not allowed to do such thing to a royal princess..and incorporating ballet moves to a traditional dance such as this one..not really cool...
It saddens me to hear about this debate, the purist versus the modern version. I implore our Muslim brethren for greater understanding. Artistic pursuits like these are meant to be shared. I'm sure no disrespect was meant by the LDT. In fact, it is a tribute to the Maranao contribution to Filipino culture. I completly agree that this version is completely unique and very creative. Let's respect each other by recognizing that each has the right to b difernt, be it in dance or religious outluk :)
