@onemellowdude - Abba more popular than Ian Hunter? Not in my world they're not. And as my opinion is the only that counts in my world that is the only fact that I need to know.
If you look at this video really close, you'll notice that Martin Briley is playing bass on this track. I've got the vinyl disc that lists him in the credits.
It's as simple as this: There's no reason getting pissed at Great White. They covered this song and had way more success than Ian Hunter. Doesn't matter who did the better version. If so many people are against the Great White version, why has it sold a whole lot more copies? It's all the fans. Not the bands. If you're so shook up about it, buy more of Ian's stuff. @markkondak You got me......like Craig Ferguson said, " Yer not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame??REALLY? You wrote Cleveland Rocks! It's in Cleveland!!" I second that. Absolutely shameful.
At the very start and very end you can see me and my friend Joe claping and jumping. I was always a fan of Mick Ronson. Joe & I decided to stay and pretend we were working there. We joined the band in the dressing room for snacks and drinks and then they took us to the ABC cast party after. How funny I came across this!
Let's see...All The Way From Memphis, Once Bitten Twice Shy, Just Another Night, Ships,C leveland Rocks, Irene Wilde, All The Young Dudes, Standing In My Light, We Gotta Get Out Of Here...WHY is he NOT in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame?
Mick Ronson was a Guitar God. He does not get the credit that he deserves. His solo music was great too. He should be recognized as a legend and so should Ian Hunter. Love the two of them together here!
jimz68; sorry if I'm late in responding, but the bass player in the above clip is Martin Briley, who also recorded three or four albums and who also had a chart-making single in the early 80's (maybe 1983?) called "Salt in My Tears." Briley has an impressive record of artistic affiliation and he has become something of an impresario of late.
I just saw Ian in the city today for free. He's a great guy for putting on a great show for people that love his music. I'm young and haven't heard of him until recently but i like this song a lot! The others too.
Great White made a good cover. Ian Hunter's original one is awesome, too. By the way Great White made several covers: Angel's Can't Shake It and Face the Day and of course Led Zeppelin's (Baby) I'm Gonna Leave You. All of them great songs.
I prefer the Great White cover although the original is awesome. By the way, Great White make a lot of covers: Angel's Face the Day, Can't Shake It and Led Zeppelin's Baby I'm Gonna Leave You,

Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson did the original back in 1975, and it has never been topped, by anyone, including Great White, who had a hit with it. Their version PALES in comparison. Rock on, Ian! R.I.P. Mick! We miss you!!!!

The Hunter/Ronson Band was great - Love Ian's silverburst Les Paul Custom. This remains one of my all time fave ROCK songs. So glad I saw Mott 3 times. I would love to play Mick Ronsons' Les Paul... rock on!!
you've got to be kidding. This is Ian Hunter the guy who wrote the song and Mick Ronson. If Ronson had only ever recorded the lead in Teenage Moondream, he would be and is immortal
Ian Hunters recorded LP record version is still better than Great White. Hunter wrote this, owned it, Great White are copy cats. Listen to Hunters record version
Where did you see them. And people may think you are kidding, but I had never heard much of Queen before that. In fact, I think I heard one song a little. But many there at the concert were there to see Queen. But I was a huge Mott Fan at the time, and later became a big Queen...fan that is..
Ian Hunter is both an incredible songwriter and fantastic performer. I've seen him live half a dozen times over the years and it's always a great show.
I think the Great White version is great too, but this is the original!
The Great White version is definitely great. I was just listening to it the other day. Great White were always a great band, but I think in this case, credit really goes to old Mott. There's just a timelessness to their songs. Anyone catch "All the Way From Memphis" being used throughout last week's "Life on Mars"?
my personal opionon is that great white's version is better
did you know that nobody heared of great white before they did a cover of this song. Great whites cover of this was acually nominated for a grammy. why waseny ian's versions so popular. I personaly havent heared of Ian Hunter before I heared great whites version of "Once bitten twice shy"
Did you know that you haven't got a clue what you're talking about?Maybe if you were 29 instead of 19 then you would know.Great White's Once Bitten went platinum."Rock Me" was a huge song for them and better than this cover.Maybe if you heard(heared)it you would know.
Just checked out the Staus Quo and the Great White versions; everybody deserves a fair chance: Status started out surprisingly well, but they lacked the stamina and rhytmical discipline: it wasn't their song and they knew it I guess. G.W. - well, mainly an 80's thing I would say. They didn't expect to make a classic. They didn't either. Hunter Ronson vs the Rest: 1-0.
Sometimes theres blood on my ass from personal issues I'm not going to discuss in this forum. Is'nt Ian just fabulous. I love him so much. Hey Randall are you single? Let me know swinger.
Has no-one spotted that this included one of the last live performences of the late, great Mick Ronson, underrated guitarist, performer, showman and sparring partner/zeitgeist/springboard of Ziggy Stardust AKA the rising David Bowie? Render unto Caesar etc etc etc.......
Great song. This always sounded kinda punky, before British punk even existed. As for the quiet intro, whats wrong with a bit of foreplay? You wouldn't want to climax in the first ten seconds would you?
Perhaps not... unless you get a superclimax the next ten seconds. :) Anyway, Mott t. H. as richely orchestrateded as their albums were, never had a rhytm guitar player like Ronson (I know he was in the band on their last tour and on some odd recorded tracks). Ralphs and Bender layed out fine melodical lines. Ronson could do anything in the world with a guitar, and often he did. M.t.H was nevertheless a rhythmical R&R band. Believe it was much in the piano and the bass.
Great Rock-a-Billy feel to it. Ian won of the best.

The Hunter/Ronson Band was great - Love Ian's silverburst Les Paul Custom. This remains one of my all time fave ROCK songs. So glad I saw Mott 3 times. I would love to play Mick Ronsons' Les Paul... rock on!!
BostonRocker51 3 years ago
you've got to be kidding. This is Ian Hunter the guy who wrote the song and Mick Ronson. If Ronson had only ever recorded the lead in Teenage Moondream, he would be and is immortal

The Great White version sucked and not in a good way. I was appalled the first time I heard it -- extremely bland and they got the words wrong.

Ian Hunters recorded LP record version is still better than Great White. Hunter wrote this, owned it, Great White are copy cats. Listen to Hunters record version

I loved this song in 1975 when I was 18 and still love it!
The R&R riffs are great, but ot has to have the best R&R lyrics of all time.
Great White's version is good but not a patch on the original.
Ian and Mike roolz!

i bought it and his debut solo lp too!,i was 17,first saw Mott live with obscure support band Queen, whatever happened to them eh?

I saw Queen and Mott in Kansas City, Ks.
Where did you see them. And people may think you are kidding, but I had never heard much of Queen before that. In fact, I think I heard one song a little. But many there at the concert were there to see Queen. But I was a huge Mott Fan at the time, and later became a big Queen...fan that is..

This song rocks!

I meant to give a thumbs up to RandallJonesey's comment and absentmindedly clicked the thumbs down. Apologies.
This is one original that will never get beat. Came here in search of the studio original, but appears that it doesn't exist on the site.

You wouldn't want to climax in the first ten seconds would you?
theswitch6 3 years ago 2
Fantastic line up, much tighter than Mott the Hoople, but I loved Mott The Hoople. This version instructed everyone who copied it.
ronnierythm 3 years ago
Perhaps not... unless you get a superclimax the next ten seconds. :) Anyway, Mott t. H. as richely orchestrateded as their albums were, never had a rhytm guitar player like Ronson (I know he was in the band on their last tour and on some odd recorded tracks). Ralphs and Bender layed out fine melodical lines. Ronson could do anything in the world with a guitar, and often he did. M.t.H was nevertheless a rhythmical R&R band. Believe it was much in the piano and the bass.
