that is technically terrible kata! so many corners cut to achieve the 'effect of explosiveness'. hands all over the place, extra movements after finishing most slow movements, lack of understanding of movements, so techniques are illogically separated just to achieve speed.
it's amazing that joel did not get penalized for all these things. maybe all the judges are interested in nowadays is flashy movement?! the scary thing is that more and more youngsters are going aspire to examples like this
I think Joel Carpin has very excellent kihon. But just like what @sedativechunk mentioned below, the pauses are a little too long. Maybe it was done to emphasize kihon. I prefer that katas are performed with excellent rhythm, continuous flow and excellent technique. Personally, too long of a pause breaks the continuity of techniques. But again, this is just my personal opinion.
Actually I think the pauses are a little too long in this performance. Kata is supposed to represent you fighting a real person. If you are fighting against imaginary people, why would you take such long pauses? They should be one second, not 3-4 seconds.
what languge are they using. it sounds so closed to spanish...is may be italian? was that tournoment in france? and if in france, then one can imply that they are talking french. my wife asures me that is not french,so who can answer to clear up my mind.
Remember that a kata is open to interpretation with regard to what moves & sequences mean, and thus the rhythm.
Looking at the kata in a cold technical point of view you could say it is 'flawed' in the way the pauses are longer than expected. But if you are more open minded you can appreciate the way it is performed.
You don't have to perform a kata in the same way all the time, you know.
I would have to assume the rest of the kata was as bad as the first 90 seconds. I couldn't stand to watch any more. It is aweful. Too much stopping (good kata involves "pauses" at most) and the fast parts were rushed and the technique was flawed. The competitors belt looks brown. For a brown belt, this kata is pretty good. But certainly not good for a black belt.
I'm a black belt in shotokan & I don't even know this kata... Your a purple belt & you don't just know the kata, you mentionned you know very well this kata.
There's more than one way to execute a kata i think...
He's very good between the transition from hard to soft I think. But hey, what the **** do I know!
really nice ... I actually do this kata a lot ... kinda hard but so handsome when you do it well ! I'm saying that even though I'm green belted and I need to progress ... Anyway, that's great :) !

Flawless and strong performance. shotakan poses are strong and make it look good 2 ( which is a big advantage in kata). arigato.

There is not too much stopping, this kata is performed perfectly. Each system may perform it differently but this is none the less PERFECT.

No, the kata got worse after 90 seconds..
I think it was a red belt, he is probably a black belt, the red is for competition.

Claro que es cinturon negro!!! eso es obvio.. el rojo es de competencia!!! igual que el azul!!

I could not agree with you any more than I do. He absolutely murders this kata! Timing, rhythm is all wrong.
You can argue polished aspects of the kata but again, from a JKA perspective, its not performed correctly.
Then again, he's not JKA, he's WKF.
To the WKF, thats flawless.

You are a black Belt in Shotokan and you don't know this Kata ??
I suggest you buy Master Nakayama's "Best Karate" book 11.
It contains Gojushiho Dai and Gojushiho Sho
