@LadyCooky Yes, Julie was the first Eliza when they did the musical in Brodway in at the end of the 50s. Then when they made the movie they choose Audrey because she was very famous in all the USA
Try listening to a Japanes Actor-Singer, Seiko Niizuma, sing this song on Youtube. She is awesome! Especially, the last note goes higher than anybody who tried singing this song.
@du6053 Yup - except for small lines in "Just You Wait" and maybe something else. Marni Nixon also did the singing for Deborah Kerr in "The King & I" and for Natalie Wood in "West Side Story." If she doesn't have some sort of an Academy Award for all that, she deserves one. It's amazing because she picks up the vocal feel of the different actresses and really tries to adjust so that it seems as though they are singing. It would have never occurred to me that it was one woman for all three.
@cutieXnicegrl The era of musical theater, particularly back then, had a strong focus on sensuality that they tried to subtly (key word is subtly) evoke whenever they had the option. Anges de Mille lectured the creators of Oklahoma on needing more sexuality in the first act when they were originally crafting the show (it was called 'away we go' back then and flopped horribly before major rewrites to make it the classic it now is). This is an expression of that. Just listen to the lyrics.
I wish My Fair Lady (Movie) had Julie's singing at least.. I have heard so many versions of this song (Marni Nixon, Audreh herself!!!!, and even FRANK SINATRA!! plus so many other stage versions) but none of them even compare to Julie Andrews' rendition..
I love her voice so much :] Julie Andrews has such a lovely singing voice. (And so does Marni Nixon) (Also, Audrey Hepburn has a lovely singing voice which she showed in Breakfast At Tiffany's)
What happened to Julie's voice was an unthinkable tragedy.
The first time I heard this song was at a college talent show. The girl singing it gave an astounding performance of this terrific song. I would have been honored to lose to her. as it was, we both lost, and the winner was nothing special.
I love Julie Andrews and this comment is not derogatory, it's just a fact. The lyrics in this song could be taken way out of context. It sounds as if she's talking about doing the horizontal hula for the first time. Listen closely, and you'll catch on to what I'm saying.
Julie Andrews is the most fantastic woman who has ever lived. The greatest singer. No matter what, she is my favorite idol of all. Meeting her would be a real dream come true! I hope I could meet her one day.
@USofMilitaryPower94 The film producers just didn't believe Julie Andrews would transfer onto the screen well, that she "wasn't photogenic enough." There was also mutterings about how a stage actress shouldn't be the leading lady of a 17 million dollar movie (which was a lot back then). But think of it this way, because she was (slightly) snubbed by the producers of 'My Fair Lady' she was open to do 'The Sound of Music'!!!
I covered this song, but I'm unsure how to post a video response...LOL. Anyway if you would like to see it, check out my page! This is one of my favorite songs to sing!!
Julie has been my fav actress since I was 2!!! I think Audrey played the part of the cockney flower girl well in the movie though, I couldn't imagine Julie scowling in the fashion that Audrey Hepburn lit up the silver screen with!
They both are/were amazing women and actresses... Julie just happened to have a better voice. Oh boo-hoo, Audrey couldn't sing. But Audrey is the only one who fits Eliza's character, and she, IMO, was a better actress then Julie.
Julie can sing better then Audrey, and Audrey could act better then Julie.
@KikyoChanXD As much I think Audrey was an incredible actress, in this case I am for Julie. I grew up listening to the original Broadway Cast album (Rex Harrison, Julie Andrew, Sterling Holloway), and I cannot imagine anything surpassing it. In the movie Harrison is walking through the role, Holloway is starting to show his age, and I feel Audrey was handled badly in some of the scenes. (She is almost treacle in "Woudn't it be Loverly").But please do not think that I hate her for even a moment,
@KikyoChanXD i'm not an Audrey hater... i Agree that Julie can sing better than Audrey but i don't think Audrey can act better than Julie. She won the Academy for best actress against Audrey right. lets just put it this way
.
Julie's singing skills is far more superior than Audrey's but they equal in acting skills.
.
well whether you agree or not i think Julie and Audrey are still Goddesses when compared with actors that we have today.
hey guys! please please please check out my friends' doing this at a concert. one is playing the piano, one is singing. both absolutly amazing!!!! thanks

@chouquetteamour this is why i hate my generation of music, there is no originality!!!... new and upcoming younger artists keep bastardizing someone elses work and then take credit from it... i hate singers who don't even know how to create their own materials.
.
this is also the exact same reason why i keep digging musical treasures from way way back... the only problem is there's always some random person who suddenly butts in and remind me of how "BULLCRAP" the music industry is today... O_o

@phylosaccount okay i think i should rephrase that "i hate singers who cover songs which already a hit, ride its fame and then act like they themselves made it a hit"... at least with julie, she may have covered some but those songs weren't really famous until she touched it. and most of her songs were really made just for her and her beautiful voice.

I never really got why Hepburn was thought to be so great. She's nowhere near as talented as Julie. Many people could have done MFL just as good. @impassable I don't think Andrews was talented, rather, she was naturally gifted with a four octave voice from childhood. Hepburn was the best at making the best out of what she had.
@RichardElden I'm still trying to figure out where he got the idea that she wouldn't be a box office draw. She was the star of the most successful Broadway musical of all time and in those days they were a bigger deal than they are now. Via the wonderful medium of television she was known to millions of people. He made some pretty stupid decisions and a lot of them in the name of cash.
If there was ever a chance, I would have really loved to see a Julie Andrews-version of My Fair Lady. This is not to say that Audrey Hepburn was not good. This is only my hope to see yet another face of Julie Andrews.
Julie Andrews is one of the greatest things to appear on Earth. I grew up with her in Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music, and hearng her voice is like hearing the angels singing.
I know! I can not believe her five octave range in Victor Victoria. What sucks is that that's when she got nodules and that was the beginning of the end of her singing career. IF YOU ARE GONNA SCREW UP JULIE ANDREW'S VOICE, DON'T EVEN TRY TO OPERATE ON HER, ASSHOLE! LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE!
@PEACEiful Actually, Julie Andrews at one time had a singing range of four (4) octives. She is and always will be an amazing, classy, and gorgeous woman - a true "gift" to planet earth. Andrew's voice and acting skills were far superior to anything Audrey Hepburn muster for the My Fair Lady movie version. Hepburn's voice was dubed "out" in the MFL movie because it was just like her acting - mediocre and overrated. Jack Warner was a true idiot.
@ElisabethSwannRULES You mean "Marni was amazing", I'm sure. I LOVE Audrey, but she was no singer by any means. Marni Nixon was hired for (almost) all of the Eliza's singing in that film.
@JuanMacready You know what you probably sit at home with 10 cats and you and your talentless self can go jump of the highest cliff you can find and i hope you turn into a vegetable for ever AUDREY was an amazing person and if you actually had a soul i would say your going to hell but clearly you don't have one. Bringing some one's terminal illness into your opinion just proves your the lowest a human can get.
@JuanMacready Well I do agree that Julie Andrews would have been better for the role, but must you really call Hepburn talentless or cancer-ridden? That's simply being mean. Hepburn was a wonderful actress. Not the best singer, but still a wonderful actress. And she should be recognized for her own talents, not put down for the ones that she doesn't possess.
@Unintensify WRONG - Disney offered to delay filming on Mary Poppins if Julie was cast in My Fair Lady instead of the talentless cancer-ridden cunt Hepburn.
i love julie andrews and yes i do prefer her over audrey hepburn but hepburn was fantastic in the movie even if it wasn't her own voice. the only reason i like julie better is because my favourite movies when i was a kid were mary poppins and the sound of music. love her !!! miss her voice so much, she made up my childhood.
@theoneandonlySS1995 There are still good singers that do well nowaday. Susan Boyle, Sarah Bringhtman and the most recent Jackie Evancho etc. None of them use autotune etc crap. Any many youngsters are inspired by them.
@iamthebookthief You're just jealous at SuBo. I grow up listen to Julie Andrew as one of my favor voice when I was young. Now, I bought both SuBo and Jackie Evancho CD. Both my favors. Are you going to say Jackie is awful too. Hmm, maybe you hate Simon Cowell products.
Jackie isn't that awful. She's not going to be good in ten years though. Her voice will change too much and she'll probably sound like Charlotte Church does now. Julie Andrews, when she was twelve, could outsing anyone; Jackie can't even come close to her. And for the record, I actually have a track record for liking Simon Cowell's products; Susan Boyle just sucks something awful.
@iamthebookthief I don't know if Jackie can come close to Julie Andrew singing. But Jackie already make history the youngest to debut at top 10 unseat Michael Jackson (11). Sony already prepare to award platinum for Jackie for her CD, so she will be the youngest to be award platinum at age 10. There is NO ONE in the world can come close. She make history. Where were Julie at 10? C Church? I think Jackie will make more history to come. Grammy next.
Hi All! PLEASE do not waste your time replying to Juan Macready. He is all over YouTube, spewing vile and vicious comments about:
Dick Van Dyke
Sally Ann Howes
Audrey Hepburn
"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"
"Mary Poppins"
There is absolutely NO point in arguing with him. He is a pathetic loser who loves to rain on everyone's parade. He will NOT give up. His statements are all LIES and UNTRUTHS. If you were all smart, you would simply mark everyone of his comments as SPAM. He's not worth your time.

Julie Andrews is one of the greatest things to appear on Earth. I grew up with her in Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music, and hearng her voice is like hearing the angels singing.

I adore Julie Andrews :)

@tylove110
Lol
PEACEiful 1 year ago 4
@PEACEiful Actually, Julie Andrews at one time had a singing range of four (4) octives. She is and always will be an amazing, classy, and gorgeous woman - a true "gift" to planet earth. Andrew's voice and acting skills were far superior to anything Audrey Hepburn muster for the My Fair Lady movie version. Hepburn's voice was dubed "out" in the MFL movie because it was just like her acting - mediocre and overrated. Jack Warner was a true idiot.

This is so much better than Audrey Hepburn singing the same song!!!! Audrey was amazing though.
ElisabethSwannRULES 1 year ago
@ElisabethSwannRULES You mean "Marni was amazing", I'm sure. I LOVE Audrey, but she was no singer by any means. Marni Nixon was hired for (almost) all of the Eliza's singing in that film.

Julie would have been far better than the talentless cancer-ridden cunt Hepburn.
JuanMacready 1 year ago
@JuanMacready You know what you probably sit at home with 10 cats and you and your talentless self can go jump of the highest cliff you can find and i hope you turn into a vegetable for ever AUDREY was an amazing person and if you actually had a soul i would say your going to hell but clearly you don't have one. Bringing some one's terminal illness into your opinion just proves your the lowest a human can get.
c6j3sebf 1 year ago 5
@JuanMacready Well I do agree that Julie Andrews would have been better for the role, but must you really call Hepburn talentless or cancer-ridden? That's simply being mean. Hepburn was a wonderful actress. Not the best singer, but still a wonderful actress. And she should be recognized for her own talents, not put down for the ones that she doesn't possess.

@JuanMacready well, seeing as you dont seem too smart, Julie couldnt have, since she was filming Mary Poppins at the time this was filmed.

Julie Andrews is one of the most respected loved singer in the world.
flyingalbert 1 year ago 4
@theoneandonlySS1995 There are still good singers that do well nowaday. Susan Boyle, Sarah Bringhtman and the most recent Jackie Evancho etc. None of them use autotune etc crap. Any many youngsters are inspired by them.

@flyingalbert Oh come on. Susan Boyle is just awful. If it wasn't for her sob story, no one would note that she was "fantastic".
iamthebookthief 1 year ago
@iamthebookthief You're just jealous at SuBo. I grow up listen to Julie Andrew as one of my favor voice when I was young. Now, I bought both SuBo and Jackie Evancho CD. Both my favors. Are you going to say Jackie is awful too. Hmm, maybe you hate Simon Cowell products.
flyingalbert 1 year ago

@flyingalbert
