I can understand that if it's tank cars or other hazmat, but I'm not so sure for autoracks...probably just some priority freight - somebody needs their dry bulk material RIGHT NOW. :) I did see yet another autorack train at Cresson this trip that had even more general freight on the point, 6 cars or so.
oh, yes, ur definately right, they use spacers if a train is hauling special loads of freight, like in- transit locos enroute to service, they must have been, it also depends on the train number, if that specific train hauls cars among other freight(but ur probably right about the priority freight thing)
that hopper might have been a FAA required spacer to separtate the consist idk
