It seems to me that the questions here poke at opposite sides of the spectrum, so answering the same to all of them would cancel the effects of each other, putting you in the center. The center is the Liberal parties territory. It makes sense to me. However, I will add, you must always get your information from multiple sources and avoid getting them from places known for their bias. So, don't use the CBC and don't use FOX. Use Political Compass. Idk, seems like a good methodology.
That is odd, in the United States, the Liberals are the good guys and the Conservatives are ruining the country, is it possible that corruption transcends party names and ends up infiltrating whichever party is in power the longest? Do political parties have an expiration date? Food for thought.
This actually proves that the test is fairly balanced. The fact that you can't understand why answering the same to every question SHOULD put you right in the middle at (0,0) makes me worry.
Although, I WILL say, ANYONE who gets their voting information from online quizzes or surveys is an idiot...... some of the questions, like in ANY survey were ones where you could've answered with more than ONE of the options, but that's the nature of surveys like these... and I would say there was an equal "to the right" and "to the left" margin of error in the nature of the questions' formulation. I don't necessarily think the survey is totally accurate, but I don't find it partisan either
You cannot call a party "left" or "right" without looking at the relative "competition". By European standards, the Liberal Party is centre-RIGHT, Bu Canadian standards, they are more centrist but compared to the conservative party, they are left-leaning, while compared to, say , the NDP , they are VERY right-leaning.
I went and answered the compass's questions randomly a few times, selecting completely random answers each and every single time and came up with a variety of results.
Also, what in the world makes you think that privatizing ANYTHING would eliminate bias??
A privately-owned anything could just as easily, especially if owned by a for-profit company, be biased and rig whatever they like to be in favour of a right-wing outcome. Corruption could be bred ANYWHERE; the only "problem" here is that it does NOT appear to be in the CBC's Vote Compass.
according to what you ACTUALLY believe, you would've gotten a result MUCH closer to what your actual stance is (if you were honest). I, myself, took the test. I am NOT a supporter of the Liberal Party, and my results were smack-on. My friend, Don, who is a total conservative right-wing person, took the test and came up..wait for it..CONSERVATIVE. My spouse took it too, and his results were very close go his actual beliefs. Just because something doesn't agree with you doesn't make it biased
the CANADIAN, which is political-spectrum based on the positions of OTHER Canadian parties. It's just simple math and statistical probability calculations. The Liberal Party is, by global standards, actually considered centre-right, however, in comparison to the conservatives, they are closer to the centre, thus making them "left" from a conservative perspective...but, from an all-Canadian, all-inclusive standpoint, they are pretty much in the centre.
The Liberal Party of Canada, by Canadian standards of the political-spectrum ARE pretty much in the centre, relative to the positions of the rest of the parties...the questions were basically made up of half where "strongly agree" would've been a left-leaning view, and the other half "strongly agree" would've been a right-wing view, so naturally, if you give the SAME answer to ALL the questions, whether it is "agree" OR "disagree", you will land in THE MIDDLE of (..contd)
You have no fucking clue what left wing is. The only difference between the Fiberals and the Cons is that at least the Liberals don't try to tell a woman what to do with her body.
liberalism is for the zombie, hivemind who have never done a minute of research in their lives. they will not know anything about anything until the hammer smashes them into the ground.
YOU ARE DUMB!!!!!!! ALL THE QUESTIONS ARE DIFFERENT THERE FOR THEY CANNOT BE POOLED TOGETHER LIKE THIS. I ANSWERED ALL QUESTIONS TRUTHFULLY AND I WASNT EVEN CLOSE TO LIBERAL!!!!! IF YOU ANSWER THE SAME TO ALL THEN YOU ARE CONTRADICTING YOUR ACTUAL VIEWS. SHOW US WHAT YOU REALLY WOULD ANSWER AND TELL US WHAT YOU ARE!!!!! BECAUSE SOME QUESTIONS ARE HOW CONSERVATIVES STAND AND SOME ARE HOW NDP OR GREEN PARTY STAND IF YOU ANSWER YES TO ALL YOU ARE PUT IN THE CENTER>>>> THINK A LITTLE FIRST
Thank you for making this. I can't BELIEVE this hasn't received more attention. Translation? Harper is going to lie, cheat and steal his way to PM of Canada, and then he's going to lie to, cheat, and steal from Canadians. Some people are so slow.... Ages ago politicians had to BUY VOTES WITH BOOZE. Now they use rigged software and the people get nothing. I'm going to make popcorn so I can sit back and watch the show once the facade is over.
i only watch the cbc when there is hockey on, otherwise it's a station that tries too hard to change my views to adopt left-wing ideas. we all pay for this terrible station that caters to the liberals. we need to scrap it.
I agree. I am a long time listener to CBC radio and they have changed drastically. I think it was during the last Liberal reign that lasted for so many years.
Funny, My dad is a NDP supporter and he got green party, I AM a Liberal supporter and I was right in the middle between Conservatives and Liberals.
It's telling you what you're CLOSEST to. Not you are definitely for sure this or are that etc.
Why didn't you answer the other questions after Like what you think is important and not important, I changed them back and fourth drastically and even Bloc Quebecqios came up as most like
To the people in eastern Canada PLEASE dont get your coverage from cbc they are extremly left wing and pro liberal. Vote conservative in my opinion im in the armed forces and the liberals every time they get in they destroy the armed forces and take away all money from us. The consevatives have been amazing for providing for us, as for the new jets do your own research trust me the media reports there was lies about the true cost trust me they are that expensive PLEASE VOTE CONSERVATIVE!
Yes except the liberals are NOT a center party, they are far left. The Conservatives are the closest thing to a center party we have so by that logic it should point you to conservatives when you answer the same for all.
You've actually proved that the test is unbiassed. By answering the same way to each question, you get a balanced response, provided the questions are balanced. Nice work.
This video is bull. I took the time to honestly answer each question and it placed me in the center of the bottom right quarter of the graph as a Conservative. It was accurate. I do not like the CBC's left leaning bias either, but this test is not an example of it.
To the 10,000 far-left Liberal-loving CBC'ers: The Liberals are NOT "closest to the centre". The LPC is a radical left-wing party with only 25% of seats in Parliament vs the Conservatives' 46%. LPC stands for:
- a carbon tax green shift
- socialism, unions, CBC & higher taxes
- Billions for Bilingualism
- Limiting free speech
- growing the welfare state
- taking away guns
The biased left-wing CBC wrongly proclaimed the LPC as the "party of the centre", without even asking.
@consluff You clearly don't understand survey methodologies. The survey is designed to have an EQUAL number of questions that are biased to the left OR the right. That means that if you answer the survey without actually THINKING your answers will negate each other and put you in the center. Which like it or not is the Liberal's territory, as they are too wishy washy to take a strong ideological stand, and prefer to pilfer ideas from both sides of the spectrum.
This video is ridiculous. Answering all of the questions the same way puts you in the center. The party closest to the center is the Liberal party. Great job blowing this conspiracy open, Sherlock!
What a mindlessly stupid piece of crap this is. You know "how" they mapped where each party sits on the map? The ASKED EACH PARTY THE SAME QUESTIONS! EACH OF THE PARTIES' OWN RESPONSES TO THE QUESTIONS RESULTED IN WHERE EACH PARTY ENDED UP ON THE MAP!
And the answer doesn't say you ARE a Liberal: it just says you are *closest* to the Liberal Party's positions! There is no bias of any kind here: this was put together by a team of 15 political scientists. Liberal hacks, all?
consluf - you proved that you know little about how surveys are designed. Some questions where you strongly agree will put you on the left, some where you strongly agree will put you on the right. By mindlessly clicking the same answer, you consistently have the cumulative set of questions that average out to the middle - a liberal position. If you HONESTLY tried to answer closet to what you feel, you that you are a true-blue conservative, or you might have a latent red tendency.
I thought I was a PC but took this test and I am Liberal... anyways I tested it like he has and every time liberal. I clicked from strong like to i don't know and repeated and i was liberal. Reversed the clicking and I was liberal. Then clicked on somewhat like the somewhat dislike and repeated through out I was liberal. Then reversed it and what do you know liberal. I don't know what to say but the wording of the questions and such make me think......
"Fuck you're a moron. The Liberal Party is in the middle you dipshit. Get your head out of your ass." - ericzap
Don't ever buy into the myth that Liberals are tolerant people. Nothing but pure hate posted here. Funny he should say Liberals are centrists though, because today the LPC released their platform which is out there in deep left field with the NDP.

I mostly agree with what has been said. Your testing methods are made even less credible by the fact that you fail to even complete the survey by weighting your priorities at the end.
As a point of amusement for myself, the lives vs dislikes on this video.
53 + 80 = 134
52 / 134 = 0.395 = 39.5%
Isn't that approximately the percent of conservative support for government ATM?
yiur method in each case is obviously flawed and logically put you in the center in each case. I answered honestly with cons 1st and lib last. Liberal is left of cons and right of ndp, putting it center of the 3. That said, i do not trust any of the party leaders and prefer a cons minority. I do not trust harper with a majority.
HAHA Poor leftist bullshit. I would love to see you live in a country where the national broadcaster at every chance tries to make you look bad trough slander and lies. The fact Harper has been able to hold onto power in the face of the CBC, writers like Heather Mallick (who recently compared him to stalin and hitler) and morons like yourself. Wanna know why ill never vote liberal. Ruby Dhalla wants to give CPP benefits to immigrants only three years after coming to canada! NEVER NEVER! NEVER!!
I agree with a lot of the others here. This testing method is flawed. I took the test and answered as though I where a con, again as an NDP, again as a Lib, as a BQ and finally as a Green. If you answer the questions proper, you should get the party that you are most aligned with.
MadHacktress, I have a revelation for you. Truth is something you discover not something you make up as you go along. CBC smells Liberal in all they do and say and this Vote Compass is outright fraud
@MyRewrite And that's a completely separate debate having nothing to do with the answers and their impact on one's location on the spectrum - which is the author's contention of bias.
If the bias lays in the position of the parties on the grid itself then take umbrage with that, but the fact is that that's not the argument that the author is making in this video and it is certainly not the argument that he is trying to refute in his mistaken supposition regarding expected outcomes.
@MadHacktress I would disagree, it is the debate. The test of the Compass involved feeding it 4 different brands of nonesense. The conclusion each time was that you were a Liberal. Wait a minute, nonsensical answers added up to you being a Liberal each time. I take it all back this thing really works.
@MyRewrite And that's where your premise is flawed. Irrespective of what party you end up as, "feeding" it a series of the same answers ends you up in the middle; which shows that there are an equal number of statements which people from the left and right can "strongly agree" with. Thus, agreeing with all of them they cancel each other out - placing the user in the centre.
@MyRewrite If you disagree with the placement of the parties then you should be asking why the Conservatives didn't submit their own answers to help tweak the tool to their position correctly like the other parties did. Ask Mr. Harper to share his answers and plot that as the position of the Conservatives and that will solve the matter for once and for all - assuming of course the Conservatives are closer to the centre than the Liberals, which I doubt they are.
I can't tell a difference between the Liberal Party of Canada and the NDP anymore. They are both off promising "anti-business" socialist nirvana to their lemmings. Close down the CBC. If the Liberals want their propaganda network to persist, let them pay for it with their own damn money.
@rusheggie Dont get suckered into commercials. $30 billion on fighter jets over a number of years. Not all at once. And honestly, if we spend money on anything is that considered wrong? Our air force hasn't been updated in over 15 years. Sometimes you just have to spend money on new things.
@insaneapples I don't think the issue is spending money on new things. I think the issue is that we could've spent less money on the same or very similar new things.
@monologue33 Well fighter jets aren't cheap. They could have spent the same amount over a greater period of time maybe, but that's semantics. Ignatieff won't win, he's a tool. So is Layton, and so is Harper. How does one discern who is the lesser moron? I don't know. All I know is the country needs to move forward regardless of who's in office.
Argue testing methodology all you want but why are we paying almost 1.5 billion dollars for this garbage at the CBC ? Imagine if we took that money and applied it to education or health care .
@imN0Ttheone 1.5 billion, how did you come-up witht that number?! The most generous grant for social sciences research is 350 000$, spread over three year. Most research projects that get funding get less than 100 000$. Be reassured that the funding of research in political and social sciences in Canada is nothing compared to the funding in health research (and I am not even talking about the funding for the entire education and healthcare systems).
@TheScottGT 80 % of all corporations are small businesses and small businesses employ the majority of Canadians so yeah that would be better then wasting it on the CBC .
What you proved is that you are simple. You don't even understand what it is you are actually testing with your methodology and resort back to your pre- ordained conclusions. Glad to know you are in the conservative camp with your peers.
What you proved is that you are simple. You don't even understand what it is you are actually testing with your methodology and resort back to your pre- ordained conclusions. Glad to know you are in the conservative camp with your peers.
of course you would land in the center. You must be clueless. That does not say you are liberal (first test). For the second test, of course you would land exactly in the middle as there are 15 left wing questions, and 15 right wing questions. Thus agreeing to everything would land you in the middle. I was able to do the test to get a PC result, quite easily. I just agreed with the conservative questions. So it is not rigged, you just are too stupid to understand the test and the results.
@ahachie "...there are 15 left wing questions, and 15 right wing questions."
You have just shown yourself to be the clueless one.
eg: The environmental damage caused by the Alberta oil sands industry is exaggerated.
So the answer to this question doesn't matter whether it's true or not? If you're left, you must believe that it's not exaggerated. If you're right, you must automatically believe that it is. Ridiculous
There are several questions that really have no bearing on political leaning.
This is utterly idiotic! You landed in the CENTRE of the compass each time! It gave you liberal each time because that's closest. All this video proves is your inability to recognize all the variable provided to you.
I answered the questions honestly and got Liberal. I got my parents, who are both EXTREME right wing people to answer it and they also got Liberal. My aunt, who works for Laurie Hawn, got Liberal.Oh, but my 9 year old sister did get the Bloq Quebecois. I'm from Alberta.
@TheOriginalZyuZyu there is an article for you (and your family) today in the Calgary Herald (CBC survey isn't biased). Also, check out at the end of the questionnaire the option that allow to compare your answer to the Conservative party position. You might be less conservative than you think!
the point is which party occupies Canada's centre - if you put the same answers for all questions it will take you to the party that is nearest the centre. By the 20 questions they have chosen, this works fine (no vast left-wing conspiracy).
If you want to feel clever and make the case for a bias you need to question the questions, not the mathematical model and the respective positions of the parties.
I think it can be agreed that Liberal is the closest to the centre. Therefore, if you impartial on all issues, you are considered centre. Therefore, Liberal is closest. If you strongly agree with all statements, "right" and "left" statements, then you should be around the centre. Therefore Liberal. If you took the time to actually think about what you want from your government, you would see this as a tool. I am Liberal, but was told I am Green. It is there to make you think.
The testing method used in this video is ridiculous and actually proves that the tool is accurate. With no regard for the question choosing any 1 option throughout puts you nearest the centre - which is the most important factor for neutrality. That means that, basically, an equal number of questions are right-wing-positive and left-wing-positive with any particular answer chosen.
Your beef, it seems, is that the Liberals are closest to centre in this country; and that's not the CBC's fault.
@MadHacktress Revelation for you, truth is something you discover, not something you make up as you go along. CBC is leaning heavily to the left, and the Liberal party is certainly not in the Political centre. This Voter Compass is an outright attempt to create a new "liberal truth". It would be dispicable if it were perpetrated by any organ other than the Liberal party. Because it is of the Liberal party its expected.
Harper is no longer a conservative and has become more of a centrist then any politican in canadian history. The liberals represent CBC, toronto, and the civil service. Not canadians as a whole. I took this survey and got back liberal and i vote conservative every time. If this was CTV and a former harper policy advisor had made it you know damn well the left, cbc and you would be crying fowl. I love that CBC is no longer even trying to hide its bias no wonder CNN and FOX beat CBC in canada!
I just did the test ACTUALLY clicking PC responses and lo and behold, I got PC. So your theory is not only flawed, you should probably read things before you click them.
You realize that you agreed with some Liberal things when you clicked "strongly agree." So... You might want to read the test and do it properly first.
You realize that you agreed with some Liberal things when you clicked "strongly agree." So... You might want to read the test and do it properly first.
Calgary Sun Quote " While Vote Compass puts the Liberals in the centre, it puts the Conservatives in the bottom right quadrant of their political graph, painting the party as both social and fiscal conservatives. University of Calgary political science professor Barry Cooper said that's not where the Conservatives belong."
This guy is an idiot. All his tests show a "central" finding and Liberals are closest to central platform. If you believe this tripe for a second, you probably also believe in creationism and make this nation worse!
I took this test, and it showed I was a fairly far right Conservative. Pretty accurate I think. That's worth the billion plus they get from us....unbelievable. Canada is so lame. When are we going to put the Hammer & Sickle beside the Maple Leaf on the flag?
@gscratch, I'm left wing--much moreLleft than The NDP. I'm Green, too, and much more Green than Lizzie May. Mostly, I'm Canadian to the core. None of my responses matched the majority. I see that most of the rightwingers are males, happy with the derailing of our social services and healthcare, in favour of Corporate Rule--and FOREIGN corporate rule, at that. They like Economic Growth at all costs to others, to the environment and to our sovereignty. It makes me puke.
The CBC steals 1.3 BILLION dollars from Canadians every year and does not allow the auditor general to examine how they waste it.
They are a bunch of radical overpaid activist left wing kooks with Muskoka properties and Toronto elite lifestyles paid for by people they believe are too stupid to know their own political affiliation.
The Soviet Union required Pravada's propaganda to exist, why does Canada require the CBC?
ARE YOU COMPARING CANADIAN BROADCASTER COMPANY TO COMMIE PROPAGANDA? ARE YOU SERIOUS? HAVE YOU EVER LIVED IN ONE OF THESE COUNTRY W/ PROPAGANDA? DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT PROPAGANDA IS? ARE YOU FUCKING MORON? DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FASCISM AND COMMUNISM?
EVERY COUNTRIES AT LEAST SOME POINT FUNDS THEIR MEDIA TO GET RID OF PROFIT MOTIVE & ALLOW THEM TO OPERATE WITH FINANCIAL LENIENCE. GO WATCH FOX NEWS IF YOU LIKE CAPITALISM SO MUCH FAGGOT.
@richfisherman if you think young people listen/watch CBC, you are the kook. Only old people and those who are bored out of their minds pay attention to CBC, or for that matter, any news. No worries for you, SunTV will soon add a very slanted Conservative spin with the typical falsehoods portrayed in every show just as it's sister station FoxNews does in the US. Should be a reason to never turn on TV news for me and many others. Oh, and SunTV oddly bypassed many of the rules to get on air...odd.
I can't believe that most people voted moderately! Where the hell are their brains? This is THE most important election, with Canada's sovereignty hanging in the balance. People are so tepid, which means at the best, they are voting Liberal, which, while better than Harper, is still not enough to keep Canada. The test said I should vote for Elizabeth May! What part of social justice did they miss? I'm green, to be sure, but I want equality for all! May is a green conservative, IMHO.
How are the Liberals in the center of the political spectrum if they keep getting their asses handed to them in every Canadian election in the last 5 years?
The conservatives are in the middle, that's why we have a conservative government in Canada.
Even Toronto has a conservative mayor and Ontario has put the Liberals on a tee and are about to take an oversized driver to them and launch them out into the deep water of Lake Ontario.
The Liberals are a centrist party ... NDP on the left, Conservatives on the right, Liberals in the middle. Why is it such a surprise, then, that when you answer the questions in a neutral way, that you will be defined as "Liberal"?
I'm left-leaning. So is the CBC, so I agree with that. I try to put truth before ideology, and if you put truth before ideology, you'll agree that the CBC leans left. Most public broadcasters - like PBS, or BBC , etc - do. No surprise there.
thats so lame, all that proves if people who have a center ideology fall closest to Liberal, which is true. The questions are 50/50 left and right questions. So if you answer strongly agree for a left question, it is +2 to the left, if you somewhat agree it is +1 to the left, ect. That is the algorithm. So if for 50% you strongly agree with left, and 50% strongly agree with the right, that puts you at 0, middle, center, Liberal.
Umm, dipshit, you have to actually read the questions. Answering all one way or another does not work...it's true, you'll end up in the middle. And skipping the last number of screens kinda takes out an important measurement. So, yes, you sir, are a dipshit. Therefore, vote Conservative. Please.
anyone who does not have a strong feeling or strong grip on english language used this tool they would be led to believe they should vote Liberal That is the POINT he is trying to make... if you use thought and answer the questions without showing a distinct preference at the end 3 questions, It still shows you as a liberal... How the F does that apply... if you are showing no clear lean in any direction it should default to ... No Party affiliation! CBC should just stay out of it!
This video is a dishonest effort - I took the "Vote Compass" this morning after seeing this video when it was at 300 views and it, correctly indicated that I was New Democrat. It is things like this that do a disservice to the people of our country, be true to what you believe and work for the party that you believe in, but above all be honest in your dealings.

CBC is so left leaning. This is another of those Liberal dishonesty thing, like the Adscam! And Iggy wants to base his campagne on "Ethics and Honesty!" It's going to be 1984 again, the Libs are going to be burried alive. Bye Bye Iggy! You will lose bad, start booking your passage back to Bostoin.
This is true that the Liberals are placed where they are. But, to assume that they started with the assumption and that this is not the conclusion of the research is very strange. Cart before horse. Instead, email the researchers who designed it and ask them how the Liberals ended up where they are on the map. Once we have that data we can continue this thread. My assumption is no deliberate foul play.
Oh, and full disclosure: I'm a Green Party member and wouldn't vote Liberal.
It also placed me as a social conservative. I am not; similar polls confirm my view that I am libertarian, fiscal "conservative" social liberal (i.e. classic liberal, in the true meaning of the word). None of the answers I gave were socially conservative, except perhaps in the mind of a radical socialist who thinks wrongly he is liberal.
I cant wait for April 18 when we get some real opposing views and interesting debate instead of being forced to nod in agreement with views that represent only small special interest groups who care only about themselves. Hello Sun News Network.
@KayEnDub I assume you are talking about Sun News. I know many in the media are nervous so they are downplaying it by calling it that and their ignorance has worked on you. It has NOT even aired once and you are already complaining.
Clearly you DON'T! The liberal party is not centre. It is very left leaning. All this does is prove what many already knew, that CBC is a liberal bias network and it is not right that the government funds it. You realize we pay over a billion dollars to CBC. I am fine with CBC but it will be more fair once it is fully privatized and equal like the National Post, Globe and Mail, CTV and Global.
@worldolympics2010 The Liberal Party is centrist. Anyone who claims differently doesn't have a very good grasp on reality, is extremely biased, or plain lying.
Not only are the Liberals neither liberal nor centrist, but the questions were not balanced wither so neither should each result be central in these tests.
@Xondar11223344 errrrmmmm, except that he does; unlike you, it appears. Calling all one answer should not come up with the same result regardless of which answer, and the centre should not be labelled for a party which is not of that centre.
@randomxnp You are aware that the answers are staggered right? You can't get an accurate reading by only giving one reply for the entire quiz, it's designed for people to put actual thought into their answer and not generic replies.
What a rediculous methodolody! There are 5^30 possible ways to submit answers in this quiz and you've chosen 5 of them. That means you've tested exactly 0.000000000000000000536870912% of the possible submission scenarios. And, you've reached a conclusion about all the other trillions or trillions of possible outcomes? Test all possible outcomes and then post the results. Idiot.
A political compass should not give the same result regardless of the answer gven to all questions unless that result is dead in the centre and the questions are exactly balanced (which these are not, and some are ambiguous or entail left-wing assumptions). Then only a centrist party should be given as the best match, so CBS assumes wrongly that the Liberal Party is the centre.
I hope uninformed Canadians would have the sense to not use this tool to decide who they vote for but to actually look at where the respectively parties stand where on what issues. They come up after you get your results.
For a totally rigged quiz, it strangely put me HARD into the CPC camp the three times I took it. By your "reasoning" the quiz is rigged to put folks on the conservative side of things if they answer the quiz in a conservative manner.
Took the test twice. The first time through I answered with responses slightly left of how I actually would respond. It came out "Liberal". No surprise there. I took the test a second time modifying some responses to reflect a more right-wing voter (which is my tendency). It came out "Conservative". I'm not surprised that choosing "Slightly disagree/agree" or "Neither agree/disagree" returns a result of "Liberal" which reflects the centrist nature of the Liberals. The test here is flawed.
I took it once. Came up Liberal. Analized the answer for answer results and noticed alot of answers didn't match. Took it again but instead of answering "neither agree or disagree" on the questions that I did not know/care about, I answered "I don't know". Now I'm conservative. In conclusion: Indecisiveness = Liberal. (apparently)
Anyone using this "tool" to decide how to vote is probably too stupid to find the polling station.By making the automatic default of this poll give the people taking it an instant liberal status, they are hoping this will influence the election. This is just the CBC showing their bias again. By getting young, inexperienced voters who are undecided to vote for the liberals and to perpetuate the CBC gravy train so that useless leftists can get jobs producing third rate crap that no one watches.
@BenFWilliamson you just don't get it do you! if you think the liberals are 'centrist' you are ignorant. They are left leaning and conservatives are right leaning. There is no centrist party in Canada. The fact that you are defending CBC for such a propaganda system is quite ridicule.
And this is not even the first time they have been exposed for this type of behaviour.
To you, how is it fair for taxpayer money to go to daily liberal campaigning? The government pays CBC over a BILLION every year
@worldolympics2010 It's true that the LPC is slightly left leaning (between the centre and the centre-left), but it is still much closer to the centre of the Canadian political spectrum than any other party. The grid used by the CBC to plot the parties' positions is absolutely standard in political science. Because of this, someone who places themself in the centre of the spectrum will be closest to the Liberals, by basic geometry.
@randomxnp The Conservative Party is attempting to get the Conservative vote. Of COURSE they're going to claim that the Liberal Party are a bunch of radical leftists.
Full disclosure: I AM a radical leftist. Trust me, the Liberal Party is not.
The result doesn't say you ARE liberal. It says you're CLOSEST to Liberal. That's who the centrist party is.
In your first test, you had no strong opinions, in the second you gave both military spending AND the environment strong opinions. They average themselves out. You failed to mention that your position on the spectrum slightly changed, and that you didn't answer the last questions to better position yourself.

I don't necessarily think the survey is totally accurate, but I don't find it partisan either
ammarios 10 months ago
You cannot call a party "left" or "right" without looking at the relative "competition". By European standards, the Liberal Party is centre-RIGHT, Bu Canadian standards, they are more centrist but compared to the conservative party, they are left-leaning, while compared to, say , the NDP , they are VERY right-leaning.
I went and answered the compass's questions randomly a few times, selecting completely random answers each and every single time and came up with a variety of results.
ammarios 10 months ago
Also, what in the world makes you think that privatizing ANYTHING would eliminate bias??
A privately-owned anything could just as easily, especially if owned by a for-profit company, be biased and rig whatever they like to be in favour of a right-wing outcome. Corruption could be bred ANYWHERE; the only "problem" here is that it does NOT appear to be in the CBC's Vote Compass.
ammarios 10 months ago
according to what you ACTUALLY believe, you would've gotten a result MUCH closer to what your actual stance is (if you were honest).

Had you ACTUALLY gone and answered (..contd)

You're a fucking moron.

To the 10,000 far-left Liberal-loving CBC'ers: The Liberals are NOT "closest to the centre". The LPC is a radical left-wing party with only 25% of seats in Parliament vs the Conservatives' 46%. LPC stands for:
- a carbon tax green shift
- socialism, unions, CBC & higher taxes
- Billions for Bilingualism
- Limiting free speech
- growing the welfare state
- taking away guns
The biased left-wing CBC wrongly proclaimed the LPC as the "party of the centre", without even asking.
consluff 11 months ago 23
@consluff Couldn't agree more
xYoungDeezYx 10 months ago
@consluff You clearly don't understand survey methodologies. The survey is designed to have an EQUAL number of questions that are biased to the left OR the right. That means that if you answer the survey without actually THINKING your answers will negate each other and put you in the center. Which like it or not is the Liberal's territory, as they are too wishy washy to take a strong ideological stand, and prefer to pilfer ideas from both sides of the spectrum.
123philhenderson 9 months ago
This video is ridiculous. Answering all of the questions the same way puts you in the center. The party closest to the center is the Liberal party. Great job blowing this conspiracy open, Sherlock!
skeetergreen 11 months ago 2
What a mindlessly stupid piece of crap this is. You know "how" they mapped where each party sits on the map? The ASKED EACH PARTY THE SAME QUESTIONS! EACH OF THE PARTIES' OWN RESPONSES TO THE QUESTIONS RESULTED IN WHERE EACH PARTY ENDED UP ON THE MAP!
And the answer doesn't say you ARE a Liberal: it just says you are *closest* to the Liberal Party's positions! There is no bias of any kind here: this was put together by a team of 15 political scientists. Liberal hacks, all?
kiwehtin 11 months ago
consluf - you proved that you know little about how surveys are designed.

MadHacktress, I have a revelation for you. Truth is something you discover not something you make up as you go along. CBC smells Liberal in all they do and say and this Vote Compass is outright fraud
MyRewrite 11 months ago
@MyRewrite And that's a completely separate debate having nothing to do with the answers and their impact on one's location on the spectrum - which is the author's contention of bias.
If the bias lays in the position of the parties on the grid itself then take umbrage with that, but the fact is that that's not the argument that the author is making in this video and it is certainly not the argument that he is trying to refute in his mistaken supposition regarding expected outcomes.
MadHacktress 11 months ago
@MadHacktress I would disagree, it is the debate. The test of the Compass involved feeding it 4 different brands of nonesense. The conclusion each time was that you were a Liberal. Wait a minute, nonsensical answers added up to you being a Liberal each time. I take it all back this thing really works.
MyRewrite 11 months ago
@MyRewrite And that's where your premise is flawed. Irrespective of what party you end up as, "feeding" it a series of the same answers ends you up in the middle; which shows that there are an equal number of statements which people from the left and right can "strongly agree" with. Thus, agreeing with all of them they cancel each other out - placing the user in the centre.
MadHacktress 11 months ago
@MyRewrite If you disagree with the placement of the parties then you should be asking why the Conservatives didn't submit their own answers to help tweak the tool to their position correctly like the other parties did. Ask Mr. Harper to share his answers and plot that as the position of the Conservatives and that will solve the matter for once and for all - assuming of course the Conservatives are closer to the centre than the Liberals, which I doubt they are.
MadHacktress 11 months ago
@MyRewrite Furthermore: do not mistake the "average" of Canadian values for the centre of the political spectrum. They are not at all the same thing.
MadHacktress 11 months ago

@rusheggie Dont get suckered into commercials. $30 billion on fighter jets over a number of years. Not all at once. And honestly, if we spend money on anything is that considered wrong? Our air force hasn't been updated in over 15 years. Sometimes you just have to spend money on new things.
insaneapples 11 months ago
@insaneapples I don't think the issue is spending money on new things. I think the issue is that we could've spent less money on the same or very similar new things.

@imN0Ttheone 1.5 billion, how did you come-up witht that number?! The most generous grant for social sciences research is 350 000$, spread over three year. Most research projects that get funding get less than 100 000$. Be reassured that the funding of research in political and social sciences in Canada is nothing compared to the funding in health research (and I am not even talking about the funding for the entire education and healthcare systems).

jemes23 11 months ago
of course you would land in the center. So it is not rigged, you just are too stupid to understand the test and the results.
ahachie 11 months ago 11
@ahachie "...there are 15 left wing questions, and 15 right wing questions."
You have just shown yourself to be the clueless one.
eg: The environmental damage caused by the Alberta oil sands industry is exaggerated.
So the answer to this question doesn't matter whether it's true or not? If you're left, you must believe that it's not exaggerated. If you're right, you must automatically believe that it is. Ridiculous
There are several questions that really have no bearing on political leaning.

the point is which party occupies Canada's centre - if you put the same answers for all questions it will take you to the party that is nearest the centre. By the 20 questions they have chosen, this works fine (no vast left-wing conspiracy).
If you want to feel clever and make the case for a bias you need to question the questions, not the mathematical model and the respective positions of the parties.
kanaschwiiz 11 months ago
I think it can be agreed that Liberal is the closest to the centre. Therefore, if you impartial on all issues, you are considered centre. Therefore, Liberal is closest. If you strongly agree with all statements, "right" and "left" statements, then you should be around the centre. Therefore Liberal. If you took the time to actually think about what you want from your government, you would see this as a tool. I am Liberal, but was told I am Green. It is there to make you think.
jakcanswim 11 months ago
The testing method used in this video is ridiculous and actually proves that the tool is accurate. With no regard for the question choosing any 1 option throughout puts you nearest the centre - which is the most important factor for neutrality. That means that, basically, an equal number of questions are right-wing-positive and left-wing-positive with any particular answer chosen.
Your beef, it seems, is that the Liberals are closest to centre in this country; and that's not the CBC's fault.
MadHacktress 11 months ago 25
@MadHacktress Revelation for you, truth is something you discover, not something you make up as you go along. CBC is leaning heavily to the left, and the Liberal party is certainly not in the Political centre. This Voter Compass is an outright attempt to create a new "liberal truth". It would be dispicable if it were perpetrated by any organ other than the Liberal party. Because it is of the Liberal party its expected.
MyRewrite 11 months ago

What part of social justice did they miss? I'm green, to be sure, but I want equality for all! May is a green conservative, IMHO.

I'm left-leaning. So is the CBC, so I agree with that. I try to put truth before ideology, and if you put truth before ideology, you'll agree that the CBC leans left. Most public broadcasters - like PBS, or BBC , etc - do. No surprise there.

893160007 11 months ago
thats so lame, all that proves if people who have a center ideology fall closest to Liberal, which is true.

MichaelJMoreau 11 months ago
It also placed me as a social conservative. I am not; similar polls confirm my view that I am libertarian, fiscal "conservative" social liberal (i.e. classic liberal, in the true meaning of the word). None of the answers I gave were socially conservative, except perhaps in the mind of a radical socialist who thinks wrongly he is liberal.

I cant wait for April 18 when we get some real opposing views and interesting debate instead of being forced to nod in agreement with views that represent only small special interest groups who care only about themselves. Hello Sun News Network.

They gotta balance out all the retarded that's gonna hit the airwaves with Fox News North, eh?

@KayEnDub I assume you are talking about Sun News. I know many in the media are nervous so they are downplaying it by calling it that and their ignorance has worked on you. It has NOT even aired once and you are already complaining.
Pathetic!

Hey dumb video loser guy: Do you know how a political compass works? It seems you don't!
Xondar11223344 11 months ago
@Xondar11223344 Do you know how a political compass works?
Clearly you DON'T! The liberal party is not centre. It is very left leaning. All this does is prove what many already knew, that CBC is a liberal bias network and it is not right that the government funds it. You realize we pay over a billion dollars to CBC. I am fine with CBC but it will be more fair once it is fully privatized and equal like the National Post, Globe and Mail, CTV and Global.

@worldolympics2010 The Liberal Party is centrist. Anyone who claims differently doesn't have a very good grasp on reality, is extremely biased, or plain lying.
Xondar11223344 11 months ago
@Xondar11223344
Not only are the Liberals neither liberal nor centrist, but the questions were not balanced wither so neither should each result be central in these tests.
randomxnp 11 months ago
@Xondar11223344 errrrmmmm, except that he does; unlike you, it appears. Calling all one answer should not come up with the same result regardless of which answer, and the centre should not be labelled for a party which is not of that centre.
randomxnp 11 months ago
@randomxnp You are aware that the answers are staggered right? You can't get an accurate reading by only giving one reply for the entire quiz, it's designed for people to put actual thought into their answer and not generic replies.

Welcome to the Likert Scale... you stupid ignorant moron
mossman8787 11 months ago
i just took the test and i am a conservative you just need to answer all the questions
bigmiky857 11 months ago
What a rediculous methodolody! There are 5^30 possible ways to submit answers in this quiz and you've chosen 5 of them. That means you've tested exactly 0.000000000000000000536870912% of the possible submission scenarios. And, you've reached a conclusion about all the other trillions or trillions of possible outcomes? Test all possible outcomes and then post the results. Idiot.
MichaelJMoreau 11 months ago
@MichaelJMoreau
You don't understand the video; who is the idiot?
A political compass should not give the same result regardless of the answer gven to all questions unless that result is dead in the centre and the questions are exactly balanced (which these are not, and some are ambiguous or entail left-wing assumptions). Then only a centrist party should be given as the best match, so CBS assumes wrongly that the Liberal Party is the centre.
randomxnp 11 months ago 2
This proves nothing. Do the poll properly and you'll find out what you really are. (In your case, a dick)
Rodney92 11 months ago
I hope uninformed Canadians would have the sense to not use this tool to decide who they vote for but to actually look at where the respectively parties stand where on what issues. They come up after you get your results.
JuicyOrange 11 months ago
For a totally rigged quiz, it strangely put me HARD into the CPC camp the three times I took it. By your "reasoning" the quiz is rigged to put folks on the conservative side of things if they answer the quiz in a conservative manner.
wullu5 11 months ago

(apparently)
kkenmore63 11 months ago
Anyone using this "tool" to decide how to vote is probably too stupid to find the polling station.By making the automatic default of this poll give the people taking it an instant liberal status, they are hoping this will influence the election. This is just the CBC showing their bias again. By getting young, inexperienced voters who are undecided to vote for the liberals and to perpetuate the CBC gravy train so that useless leftists can get jobs producing third rate crap that no one watches.
cobalt545 11 months ago
So you're proving that choosing centrist answers gets the quiz to recommend a centrist party for you.
Profound.
BenFWilliamson 11 months ago 2
@BenFWilliamson you just don't get it do you! if you think the liberals are 'centrist' you are ignorant. They are left leaning and conservatives are right leaning. There is no centrist party in Canada. The fact that you are defending CBC for such a propaganda system is quite ridicule.
And this is not even the first time they have been exposed for this type of behaviour.
To you, how is it fair for taxpayer money to go to daily liberal campaigning? The government pays CBC over a BILLION every year
worldolympics2010 11 months ago
@worldolympics2010 It's true that the LPC is slightly left leaning (between the centre and the centre-left), but it is still much closer to the centre of the Canadian political spectrum than any other party. The grid used by the CBC to plot the parties' positions is absolutely standard in political science. Because of this, someone who places themself in the centre of the spectrum will be closest to the Liberals, by basic geometry.
This tool is imprecise, but unbiased.
BenFWilliamson 11 months ago
@BenFWilliamson
That assumes that the Liberals really are to the centre, which many Conservatives would dispute. It therefore shows bias.
randomxnp 11 months ago
@randomxnp The Conservative Party is attempting to get the Conservative vote. Of COURSE they're going to claim that the Liberal Party are a bunch of radical leftists.
Full disclosure: I AM a radical leftist. Trust me, the Liberal Party is not.
Abbytater 11 months ago
The result doesn't say you ARE liberal. It says you're CLOSEST to Liberal. That's who the centrist party is.
In your first test, you had no strong opinions, in the second you gave both military spending AND the environment strong opinions. They average themselves out. You failed to mention that your position on the spectrum slightly changed, and that you didn't answer the last questions to better position yourself.
A for effort, D- for accuracy.
