although the song was written back in the late 80's when firing was still common practice, and our family hasn't burnt a crop since 1989, this song goes far beyond the practice of burnt cane management, a 4th generation cane farmer, whos future is in the sugar industry, this song is deep and means alot more that just the visual of a burning crop, its about pride and family.
i love his music and this is first time i've heard this song another song to tug the heart at what we have lost in this great country we need The Get FUCKED Pollys party with adam hill singing Advance Australia Fair
it is an awesome sight to see and smell...it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!But I think the point of this song is not about the beauty of the burn and more about the burn you feel when the community you worked for and with, take everything you've ever known, away. The autioneer rolls with price of chareed remains...its still happening now in Australia and nobody seems to give a shit! Its good to see that Greame does.
Great job Malabu, I've known Graeme for years being from Mackay, I'm now in Cairns and going to see him on Sunday night here. He is the most no 'BS' artist I've ever known of, great family man.
I first heard this at the Mackay Sugar Festival held by the Canegrowers Asociation in May, 2009. The festival at the Mackay Showgrounds just outside the CBD wasn't very well attended because it was the first one in many years. At the time the band played, there were not 100 people in the audience! As years go by, canefields are being sold and converted to subdivisions in the area, and looking in real estate windows on Wood St, you'd see ads for property for sale. A disappearing way of life.
hey malabu2 u havent got "mango shade" have ya. heard it the other day and forgot how much i loved it. (your the best malabu). that was in advance cos i know if anyone can hook us up its u mate, cheers.
malice1488, you fool. Graeme's music reaches across creed, colour and culture. His music is loved most by those that were here first. I have just come from visiting my mate, Eddie, who is a Torres Strait Islander. I watched as he sat enraptured, eyes closed and singing along with one of Graeme's songs playing on the local NIRS station.
Also, Australia's heritage and greatness owes a lot to "non-white" peoples like the Chinese, Afghans, Indians and, particularly, Jews.
I never miss a concert. Graeme mixes the now and then of Australia perfectly in his lyrics. If you listen to 'The Great Australian Dream' you'll hear a perfect example. Hope the restaurant goes well Graeme!
I had the great fortune of seeing him live last weekend friday and saterday at the opening of his sons new resturant in mackay and i have the great stroke of luck of knowing him as his son is my boss...he is a really great entertainer and a really kind person...
Oh I love this song! I only heard it the first time a few weeks ago and I've been playing it nearly every day since. Wish I could see Graeme live but I'm in the UK. If ever he comes here or if I ever get to Australia I'll be in the front row.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Graeme and his lovely wife Lyn while living in Mackay, he is as truly giving and kind in person as he is on stage. My mother was a huge fan and wheelchair bound, every concert I took her to he took time out from signing autographs to come over and kiss my Mum and say Hi, when she passed she had asked for this song to be played. Thanks for posting.
Wow, two of Graeme's songs in one shot. Another I heard and learned about why the cane fields are burned. Ty somuch for posting this video. I love this guy and his music. The song gives me chills and gives me happy tears. God Bless him and his music!! Sing it Graeme. You are ujp there on the top with John Williamson. You are a true story teller with feeling and do AU proud..

One of my favorite Graeme songs. I used to look out my hotel window at night and see the canefields burning to the north. Oh what memories.
