I think it was psychological, casting her in this role. Look at how she's put together (pant, pant!). You see her go through all this terrible stuff, and go "how in the world can anybody want to hurt that!?" She is immaculate. If it were some unattractive girl who didn't catch your eye, it would still be awful, but seeing her, as she was (and probably still is), in this story, it's very hard to watch when all the bad stuff starts to happen.
