I hate the way people try to say religious beliefs are the reseasoning behind troubles in the north when it is mainly just a difference in political beliefs. It just happens to be that nationalists are mainly catholic and unionists are mainly protestant.

You know, as moving as the stories are near the end of this clip (the woman's description of the keening is chilling), you have to wonder what the stories were for the Unionists - whether cops, Crown Forces, or just townsfolk - who were killed before this (the killings that preempted Cork's burning).

The fact that those reprisals weren't sanctioned shows that it was as much their emotional reaction to theirs getting killed as much as it was when the North reacted to the stories told here. Sad.

Collins backed down in the face of threats from Lloyd George but what more terror could Britain have inflicted on Ireland if the Treaty wasn't signed? Ireland was one country and should have remained one country. International opinion wouldn't have tolerated total war on the Irish. The South should hang it's head in shame.

You do know that WWI ended 1919,... Eastern/Russian Front collapsed 1917 and the germans gave up 1918. Peace was signed in 1919!

Hostilities ended Nov 11 1918. Nov 18 is a holiday all over the world because this date marked the end of the war. The treaty which laid out the blame and the conditions for contuiued peace were signed in early 1919. It was known as the Versailles Treaty.

If the IRA had "kicked the outta them" then they would have had a sovereign Irish Republic in 1921. Sinn Féin/IRA had to accept a treaty that kept Ireland within the British Empire and Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom. The rejection of the Anglo-Irish Treaty would have meant war, and a war that Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith knew the IRA would sorely lose.

The IRA were not the sole guardians of democracy in Ireland. Sinn Féin delegates signed the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the Dáil hÉireann ratified it. If, as you so claim, the IRA had outright defeated the Crown Forces, there would have been a sovereign Irish Republic in 1921. Last time I checked, the Free State only became a republic in 1949 and Northern Ireland is still very much within the United Kingdom.
