There is one way, you can have a decent living in the regionals as an FO: live in Mexico and commute to work. I know guys who do this. A lot of Mexicans work in San Diego for example and cross the border every night to Tijuana. Forget ALPA, every FO in the regionals should just sick out. If you are fired, so what? unemployment is better pay for most of you. RLA and ALPA are unnacceptable.

i dont care bout the money, i love flying airplanes and i think a crash pad would be fun after college, as well as you're upgraded to captain in a year & the pay is a lot better as a captain; up to twice as much per month so at least the nickels and dimes dont last forever
What a load of moaning about working conditions. If it's so bad, choose another job. Nobody is asking you to become a pilot. You became a pilot because you wanted to. In every industry you start at the bottom and you build it up. Stop whinging and get on with it.
This Video should be plastered all over the news on a daily basis so the world can see how much we bust our asses and some execs just dont get it. we can get a hotel for 50 bucks? yeah if I want to get shot in the hood. Lets see him go stay there.
the pres of the regional airline association is out of his mind. i cannot think of any other legal jobs (beyond commission-based ones) where people working 80 hours a week make only $18,000 for that year. i'd like him to go find those people and (assuming he does find them) see if any of them are even doing something that requires the skill and training that piloting does.
I would rather risk my life becoming a bush pilot in Africa or something then to be depressed working for the regionals half of my life. At least what I think with bush flying is that you get to experience more of what life has to offer, etc.
The US is truly the bottom of the barrel. We have it much better on Canada. I remember being a young pilot wishing I could work in the US. Thankfully that never happened and pilots in Canada enjoy far superior wages and working condition in comparison to our neighbors to the south. Unfortunately the US want a Walmart Economy. And you finally have it. Everythings cheap. Everyone is paid poorly and most are debt ridden. Really a sad story. I hope your country can rebuild
That's what the public gets for wanting cheap fare's. You think they are gonna pay $80000 for a pilot and give us a $90 ticket? Not to mention cheaping out on safety.
come on being an Airline Pilot takes allot but still its the enjoyment of it and after allong time of flying you make more and you get to go on up to flying larger planes!
If you want to be a pilot for the money, RUN, don't walk, to some other career. Sure, the pay and hours are hideous, BUT i love what i do and wouldn't trade it for the world. ASK any social worker, teacher and doctor(during residency(my brother being one) how many hours they work and get paid. For the people who changed their minds after watching this video, so be it. I wouldn't want to fly by you any given day. Give me someone who has passion for flying and is a good pilot is who i would want.
I'm in Grade 12 and I was so excited to go to a nearby institute an get my pilot's license. Now that I saw this video I'm changing my course of plans...
He says they can do it responsibly. Like what? Sleep in a van in the parking garage and eat peanut butter/jelly sandwiches? Do you have any idea how much these pilots have invested to get that $18000/yr job? The airlines know; that's why they pass it off as paying dues; but to the airlines' advantage. This is deregulation gone out of control! When these companies get this hyper-competitive, it's time for more regulation, more representation, and better quality of life for the pilots.
I know this video may make you think that this career is nothing but a waste of time, but think about this. Are you wanting to become a pilot because you love the thought of flying or are you just thinking about money? You have to really think about what you are looking for, plus if you are a first officer you can upgrade in little over a year to captain making 70k. So its not that bad, but the first year or so is always going to be the worst.
@LuckyBambooExpert It may also take many years to upgrade. to CA. Companies like Colgan (I could name alot of them) tend to have a piss poor mgmt meaning alot of pilots tend to quit for other regionals starting over from Junior Assignment and pay, (VERY few are fortunate toget hired by a Major or LCC) hence the quick upgrade. But in this economy it is now about 4 to 5 years average to upgrade to CA from FO.
I was considering being an airline pilot but after hearing all of the horror stories like this one I am probably going to get all of my ratings and just become a dispatcher and stay on the ground. Dispatchers can go home every night, make more than a pilot and have job security, especially if the regionals are only going to expand with more airplanes. Ill just fly and flight instruct on my days off!
Actually guys, US is an isolated case. In most european regional airlines you're paid very well. The fact is that the USA is not a good place to become a pilot...
But if you fly for bigger airlines and not just regional but international the pay as a 1. officer is ok, am i right? So why don't those regional pilots do that?
@HopHipRocker Yeah it is actually pretty good. But unless you have thousands of hours, you will most likely not stand a chance getting into the big airlines. Many pilots who have worked for the large airlines (delta, united, american) are ferloed and cannot find a job other than these regional jobs. It happened to my dad, working for us air one day ,about to make captain, and the next a regional airline. Luckily he was able to find a better job at a cargo airline. Hope this helped.
guys you gotta remember, their pay depends on how much a passenger is wiling to pay for a ticket (at the same time CEO's have a lot of money left over for their pockets, they should be taking responsibility in paying their pilots more).
its not a horrible lifestyle, you have to start this low and work your way up.
Best recomendation, go to college, get a good degree and do ROTC, do the military for 20 years, retire and go into this. you'll get a pension and a salary (extra money really).
@zSnoWMaYnE depends where you live... im in canada, and im in my second year of flying skydivers. My full course was 60k and im now at 550 hours. Yea there is the money involved in becoming a regional pilot, but mostly time!
@zSnoWMaYnE I am sure that there are other ways but from what I know you have to get some licenses before you do try. I am finding that out the hard way, working two jobs and struggling to obtain my private pilots license. To get to the regional pilot I think I need my Instrument license, Commercial license, some sort of radio license, and other small things, again not to sure, but it is costing me a fortune, and I have my dad as an instructor for free. The earliest age is 21 to fly commercial.
we do it because we love it - there is really no sense to it. We paid a lot of money for training and look forward to the day that it pays off. If you can survive the first few years of FO pay it's do-able. It sucks still, but we have that to owe to industry and economy. And if someone hands over a jet - what are you going to say? No thanks?
Even though the work is hard - it still ends up being "the good days".
after flight school, im gonna try to get hired by the flight school to rack up as much hours as possible...if i can drain at least 1,500 to 2,000 hours from that ill just need 1,500 more hours to apply to the majors, but it wont come cheap let me tell you that, unless you want to spend 10 years in the airforce
@ronaldbuffalo2 Oh yeah, that's right because i forgot, 99% of pilots get hired by majors don't they???
This is the reality of the pilot profession not the "dream" that everyone starts with. Unless you know someone in the Majors, not much chance of being hired.
Q400 a small plane? i beg to differ. Go stand next to one and then tell me that. Anything which can fit 70 people is not "small".
and im talking about the people in the video i understand
pilots cant go straight to the majors but when you start at a regional your going to make little money your going to fly SMALLER planes.. until you got enoung experience/flight hours to apply to the majors.
@ronaldbuffalo2 Kid at this rate most of the flying will be done by "regionals". The legacy carriers are still farming out lying to these commuters. I have seen a lot of dreams destroyed by this industry. (I am in this for 5+ years as a mechanic). Many pilots will not make it to the majors simply because there is an over supply of qualified pilots.

Cant be in it for the money. The airline industry is gonna have to change or there wont be any pilots because no one will put up with the bullcrap. Also, Roger Cohen is a lying sleez bag. Im still going to be a pilot, even though it will be rough ($90,000+ of schooling and a starting pay of $18,000 a year = life of bad credit and debt)
Some metioned going to work for corporate. This can work. Though the total time requirements for most corporate pilot jobs is right next door to the requirements for Major US airlines. You can expect better starting salaries and better treatment. A few examples are: Blue Star Jets, and Net Jets. Don't want to take a measly RA salary? Then don't. Build more time, and go for the best you can get.
And so the moral is to not always take the short cuts into the Major Airline Industry. Some guys were tricked into flying for regionals, thinking they would earn salaries that is liveable and build some time. But they got the short end of the stick. This does not means you should give up on becoming a paid professional Pilot. There are alternatives.
This corporate arse with the coiffed hairdo evidently spends more time in a tanning booth than actually giving a shit about about the people who actually work for the regionals. It isn't just about the pay, it's about unsafe working conditions, period. The rest periods are completely inadequate for starters, not to mention many other things....
I'm in high school right now working on my private pilot license, and my goal is to fly for the airlines. I had the dream of becoming a pilot sent I was 5yrs old, and I'm not going to give that dream away for nothing, hopefully things change once I get to that level I'm shooting for Major Airlines or Corporate.
DON'T NEVER STOP CHASING YOUR DREAM! no matter what.
I believe the airline industry will get better for the pilots. I think it's the CEO's of these company's that's making things bad.
I want to fly for the love of it. I won't aim for regionals I want the major airliners. What I can't understand is that how is it that regional pilots are paid less than major airlines shouldn't their pay be equal?
@Cpt15RLaing okay, the excuse is, regional airlines are stepping stones for pilots to get to the majors. lemme tell you this, ITS A LOAD OF BULLSHIT. regional airline pilots work harder then Major Airline pilots, and don't get their pay. its the saddest thing on the planet. but whats worse is, you can't get to majors anymore. most of them are furloughing, so people have to go to regionals, and the majors requier 7-900+ hours to get in. thats 20 years of flying, or 5 years at regionals or USAF
@Cpt15RLaing if you really want to know the truth to the airline industry, go to google and look up "the truth about the profession" its a weebly site, a major airline pilot made the sight on exactly how hard this industry is. it pays off, but it requires soo much sacrifice. they have the highest divorce rates, the lowest wages, worst heart attack rates etc etc.
another truth is, the pay today is the same as it was 20 years ago cept 20 years ago, you could get a decent living. today you can't.
The regional airlines are usually only for getting to the major airlines. You don't become a pilot for the money or the glamor, you do it because you love it and you are willing to do what it takes to be in the air. I am working my way through school on a dish washing job making less than $10,000 a year. So realize that there is much worse out there than this. It is only a stepping stone. A lot of my friends did exactly what I am doing now and most of them are not stuck at the regional jobs.
@goingtobeapilot Although I am definitely not saying that they aren't underpaid, because they are. All I'm trying to say is that the ultimate goal is to get to: A) the FAA B) the major airlines, or C) fed ex or ups type jobs... What a lot of people do these days is become a CFI and gain hours while teaching. This is a better alternative, but it takes longer than the regionals.
This video makes me cry... cry at the stupidity of pilots who accept mcdonalds wages and do complex and risky equipment operation. Why not become a driver? I check internet on my work computer and work 7 hours per day, 5 days a week (out of the 7 hours, I REALLY work only 2 hours) and get a good take home salary of 45000 per year.
I love the news anchor interviewing the dirty rat, Roger Cohen...unfortunately, things still haven't changed. They pay pilots 20 hours instead of 80 hours per week...pathetic!!!
woaa man!!! seriously... I was looking into flying career but looking @ regional carriers which was my target, i am really now looking forward to buziness rather then flying as there is no glamour any longer with long hours and too little pay.
@Maaz360Inam There is nothing glamorous about being stuck in a confined space for hours on end. Not to mention the extreme noise of engines, wind and avionics, howling constantly for hours and don't forget the dry recirculated virus borne air you breathe constantly. On top of that you get paid peanuts....yeah right.
@rutasr but yo... in reality u look at one thing carefully.... the noise Pilots face in cockit is not as much as outside... plus u don't face such noise inside cockpit cause the windows and the interior is sound proof.... but yah conditions are horrible.
@rutasr Well, not in the big jets like B777 or A320. yes, turboprop r quite noisy and are diffult to handle flying in turbulence but big jets are much more stable. Talking about air, you will generally see today is a poluted planet, leading us to global warming, making the weather plates change dramatically. Yes, engine fumes are quite troublish if you breath from behind the engine fans which u can't avoid. I hate the irregular hours cause you totally unhealthy due to the nature of the job.
@Maaz360Inam Why would you want to be a regional pilot? They get payed 20,000 a year. You just go through that stage for 5 years until you get hired by a major airline.
@Maaz360Inam dude do whatever you want to do this video shows all bad and no good yah its going to be tough but if its what you rally want to do go for it dude it will get bettr if u can just get through the first years:)
@Maaz360Inam dude do whatever you want to do this video shows all bad and no good yah its going to be tough but if its what you rally want to do go for it dude it will get bettr if u can just get through the first years:)
omg, this is gay bro, i just started my flight training and i feel horrible now, i mean, 20k a year? i have a gf who i want to marry one day and this is discouraging. so, how much can u make in delta as a FO?
This is horriblee I have to pay $40K for College and we are getting paid this Little? wow! Unbeliveable. Stupid Uneduated Shop Talking Auto Mechanics get paid more than this...BULLSHIT!
@rutasr Trust me man... it makes Pilots retire for ease of life and regionals have got to change cause already u r seeing a tremendous shortage of applicants for those airlines. I mean look at it right now, regional airlines are seriously looking for Pilots out there to work for them... this is the exact reason for less applicants to these airlines.
@rutasr well not really from my point of view... i know ive only been a commercial pilot for 2 years, but i love it! its a passion for me! I couldnt imagine doing anything else!
omg this is such an awesome video. more videos like this?? that says what pilots think of their lives.

i dont care bout the money, i love flying airplanes and i think a crash pad would be fun after college, as well as you're upgraded to captain in a year & the pay is a lot better as a captain; up to twice as much per month so at least the nickels and dimes dont last forever
amazingshard123 11 months ago
What a load of moaning about working conditions. If it's so bad, choose another job. Nobody is asking you to become a pilot. You became a pilot because you wanted to. In every industry you start at the bottom and you build it up. Stop whinging and get on with it.

the pres of the regional airline association is out of his mind. i cannot think of any other legal jobs (beyond commission-based ones) where people working 80 hours a week make only $18,000 for that year. i'd like him to go find those people and (assuming he does find them) see if any of them are even doing something that requires the skill and training that piloting does.

When these companies get this hyper-competitive, it's time for more regulation, more representation, and better quality of life for the pilots.
alpineace2003 1 year ago
I know this video may make you think that this career is nothing but a waste of time, but think about this. Are you wanting to become a pilot because you love the thought of flying or are you just thinking about money? You have to really think about what you are looking for, plus if you are a first officer you can upgrade in little over a year to captain making 70k. So its not that bad, but the first year or so is always going to be the worst.
LuckyBambooExpert 1 year ago

DinoPhoenixx 1 year ago
But if you fly for bigger airlines and not just regional but international the pay as a 1. officer is ok, am i right? So why don't those regional pilots do that?
HopHipRocker 1 year ago
@HopHipRocker Yeah it is actually pretty good. But unless you have thousands of hours, you will most likely not stand a chance getting into the big airlines. Many pilots who have worked for the large airlines (delta, united, american) are ferloed and cannot find a job other than these regional jobs. It happened to my dad, working for us air one day ,about to make captain, and the next a regional airline. Luckily he was able to find a better job at a cargo airline. Hope this helped.
636roadrunner 1 year ago
guys you gotta remember, their pay depends on how much a passenger is wiling to pay for a ticket (at the same time CEO's have a lot of money left over for their pockets, they should be taking responsibility in paying their pilots more).
its not a horrible lifestyle, you have to start this low and work your way up.
Best recomendation, go to college, get a good degree and do ROTC, do the military for 20 years, retire and go into this. you'll get a pension and a salary (extra money really).

Can someone please answer this? How much is the training to be a regional pilot, a321 pilot etc.? What is the earliest age to become one?
zSnoWMaYnE 1 year ago
@zSnoWMaYnE depends where you live... im in canada, and im in my second year of flying skydivers. My full course was 60k and im now at 550 hours. Yea there is the money involved in becoming a regional pilot, but mostly time!
alexandrelemelin 1 year ago
@zSnoWMaYnE I am sure that there are other ways but from what I know you have to get some licenses before you do try. I am finding that out the hard way, working two jobs and struggling to obtain my private pilots license. To get to the regional pilot I think I need my Instrument license, Commercial license, some sort of radio license, and other small things, again not to sure, but it is costing me a fortune, and I have my dad as an instructor for free. The earliest age is 21 to fly commercial.
636roadrunner 1 year ago

mrfloppyjoe 1 year ago
we do it because we love it - there is really no sense to it.

3.you cant make money if the company it self is poor
4.last but not lease the economy plays a big part.
ronaldbuffalo2 1 year ago
@ronaldbuffalo2 Oh yeah, that's right because i forgot, 99% of pilots get hired by majors don't they???
This is the reality of the pilot profession not the "dream" that everyone starts with. Unless you know someone in the Majors, not much chance of being hired.
Q400 a small plane? i beg to differ. Go stand next to one and then tell me that. Anything which can fit 70 people is not "small".
ddl550 1 year ago
@ronaldbuffalo2 Oh, and also, you think you just walk from flight school into a Major airline? LOL.
You have to go through regionals to get the experience and required hours before the majors will even look at your CV.
ddl550 1 year ago
@ddl550
did i say that in my comment......no.........
and im talking about the people in the video i understand
pilots cant go straight to the majors but when you start at a regional your going to make little money your going to fly SMALLER planes.. until you got enoung experience/flight hours to apply to the majors.
ronaldbuffalo2 1 year ago
@ronaldbuffalo2 Kid at this rate most of the flying will be done by "regionals". The legacy carriers are still farming out lying to these commuters. I have seen a lot of dreams destroyed by this industry. (I am in this for 5+ years as a mechanic). Many pilots will not make it to the majors simply because there is an over supply of qualified pilots.

Im still going to be a pilot, even though it will be rough ($90,000+ of schooling and a starting pay of $18,000 a year = life of bad credit and debt)
DerPilotMann 1 year ago
Some metioned going to work for corporate. This can work. Though the total time requirements for most corporate pilot jobs is right next door to the requirements for Major US airlines. You can expect better starting salaries and better treatment. A few examples are: Blue Star Jets, and Net Jets. Don't want to take a measly RA salary? Then don't. Build more time, and go for the best you can get.
FujiR500 1 year ago
And so the moral is to not always take the short cuts into the Major Airline Industry. Some guys were tricked into flying for regionals, thinking they would earn salaries that is liveable and build some time. But they got the short end of the stick. This does not means you should give up on becoming a paid professional Pilot. There are alternatives.
FujiR500 1 year ago

Cpt15RLaing 1 year ago
@Cpt15RLaing okay, the excuse is, regional airlines are stepping stones for pilots to get to the majors. lemme tell you this, ITS A LOAD OF BULLSHIT. regional airline pilots work harder then Major Airline pilots, and don't get their pay. its the saddest thing on the planet. but whats worse is, you can't get to majors anymore. most of them are furloughing, so people have to go to regionals, and the majors requier 7-900+ hours to get in. thats 20 years of flying, or 5 years at regionals or USAF
Sharod101 1 year ago
@Cpt15RLaing if you really want to know the truth to the airline industry, go to google and look up "the truth about the profession" its a weebly site, a major airline pilot made the sight on exactly how hard this industry is. it pays off, but it requires soo much sacrifice. they have the highest divorce rates, the lowest wages, worst heart attack rates etc etc.
another truth is, the pay today is the same as it was 20 years ago cept 20 years ago, you could get a decent living. today you can't.
Sharod101 1 year ago
Pilots get no respect in this country..!!!! FUCK FUCK the regionals am looking forward to work for corprate..!!!
pope007 1 year ago
The regional airlines are usually only for getting to the major airlines. You don't become a pilot for the money or the glamor, you do it because you love it and you are willing to do what it takes to be in the air. I am working my way through school on a dish washing job making less than $10,000 a year. So realize that there is much worse out there than this. It is only a stepping stone. A lot of my friends did exactly what I am doing now and most of them are not stuck at the regional jobs.
goingtobeapilot 1 year ago
@goingtobeapilot Although I am definitely not saying that they aren't underpaid, because they are. All I'm trying to say is that the ultimate goal is to get to: A) the FAA B) the major airlines, or C) fed ex or ups type jobs... What a lot of people do these days is become a CFI and gain hours while teaching. This is a better alternative, but it takes longer than the regionals.
goingtobeapilot 1 year ago
This video makes me cry... cry at the stupidity of pilots who accept mcdonalds wages and do complex and risky equipment operation. Why not become a driver? @Maaz360Inam There is nothing glamorous about being stuck in a confined space for hours on end. Not to mention the extreme noise of engines, wind and avionics, howling constantly for hours and don't forget the dry recirculated virus borne air you breathe constantly. On top of that you get paid peanuts....yeah right.
rutasr 1 year ago
@rutasr but yo... in reality u look at one thing carefully.... the noise Pilots face in cockit is not as much as outside... plus u don't face such noise inside cockpit cause the windows and the interior is sound proof.... but yah conditions are horrible.
Maaz360Inam 1 year ago
@rutasr Well, not in the big jets like B777 or A320. yes, turboprop r quite noisy and are diffult to handle flying in turbulence but big jets are much more stable. Talking about air, you will generally see today is a poluted planet, leading us to global warming, making the weather plates change dramatically. Yes, engine fumes are quite troublish if you breath from behind the engine fans which u can't avoid. I hate the irregular hours cause you totally unhealthy due to the nature of the job.
