Rant: Why couldn't they finish these story boards, and made it into better quality? Maybe I'm just being ignorant here, but this is real art. I'm aware that the head animator who created this beauty died, but to honor him, they need to finish the original art and re-release this wonderful movie. For heaven sake, I even like this better than Disney's little 'Arabian tale'. I'd like to show my nine year old niece this, but she's a bit young to understand why the movie is the way it is.
@sambrea This version ("The Recobbled cut") was made with mostly the workprint copy of the movie, with certain parts (the more HQ parts) taken from the VHS and DVD. Thats my understanding at least
@sambrea This version ("The Recobbled cut") was made with mostly the workprint copy of the movie, with certain parts (the more HQ parts) taken from the VHS and DVD. Thats my understanding at least
@sambrea the production of the animation was rushed after the executives and producers see that it would be a waste of money to spent on a project that have been in process for a full 24 years. Hence the mediation of full HD quality and crappy rushed quality
This version of the movie is amazing in almost every way except for the naming. I too was introduced to the movie through the Nostalgia Critic's review and I thought the names were part of the Miramax cut, but no. In a movie that was clearly not entirely for kids, why such stereotypical kids movie names?
Oh well. The way the animation moves so fluidly and the way the movie tells the story through it more than makes up for the odd naming choice.
@NeverDoubt1 It wasn't meant as a kiddie friendly movie in the first place. You can thank Miramax and Disney for that particular addition (the kiddie friendly addition that is, not all cartoons have to be kiddie friendly)
I just noticed how Tack conveys his emotions & reactions by moving the 2 pieces of tacks around his mouth, like whenever he's happy they point up, whenever he's sad they point down, pretty brilliant lol
@Purecheekyheart Funny you should say that; Aladdin was based on Thief and was released at about the same time. Unfortunately, Rich Williams lost the rights to Thief when the investors got scared he wouldn't meet the deadline. They tossed it to another group who shameless mutilated this 30-years-in-the-making labor of love, and it was considered a pitiful ripoff of Aladdin; Which is the precise opposite of the truth. Disney just reskinned it for the most part.
@NraVadumee To me, Aladdin isn't a rip off of the Thief and the Cobbler (this recobbled cut) or visa versa. They're both one of a kind films. Aladdin is a film of magic and adventure while Thief and the Cobbler is a work of art.
I like both versions of this movie, but I think, personally, its much more cute, and overall expressive, when Tack doesn't speak. Just a personal opinion.
For some reason, I remember getting this movie in a cereal box when I was maybe five (Although that might just be something I imagined) and I remember watching the pipe scene over and over because it used to make me laugh until I cried.
@jimbolimbo369 Its a restored version, As in most of the reels where found in storage or bins and they tried their b est to salvage the original film. All things considered they did a damn good job
@jimbolimbo369 The best quality stuff is the original material created by the original director, Richard Williams, and his staff. The lower quality stuff is from the outside group that took over production of the film when Williams couldn't meet his deadlines. The storyboards and line art are for the scenes that didn't quite get finished and/or were cut to replace them with Disney-esque musical numbers to increase the films marketability.
It is a sad irony that, once a version was released after all these years... that it would be criticized as "an Aladdin rip-off." The reality, of course, is that Aladinn was inspired by this...
Aside from Jaffar being very much a skinnier pale version of Zigzag, I don't see too much ripping off from this by Disney... Now... if you want a Disney rip-off... look what they did with "Kimba." Yes, change a letter and you have a certain Disney Classic... *facepalm*
@CodeXCDM yeah, The Lion King was the worst one, they got in some trouble for it so they didn't rip off as much, but they still rip stuff off, just look at Atlantis the Lost Empire, it's a good movie yes, but a lot of it is ripped from Nadia the Secret of Blue Water, my favorite Gainax anime
i am sooooo relieved to find this movie its been bugging me for years what it was i always remembered the scene where the thief crawls up the sewer pipes and gets flushed down and that i was totally mesmerized by this movie and to find is an absolute dream. but cant help but notice a few similarities between this and aladin a part of me wonders if they may have copied just a smidgen
I know that this is a wonderful masterpiece of animation that has been years in the making, but no one has even commented on Vincent Price's wonderful voice performance.
FUN FACT: 1:29 - 1:35 the scenes of Tack were from an animation test tone by Art Babbitt himself, on the orders that 'have him move like Harry Langdon.'
The only scenes of Tack that were done prior to 1990. Srsly. Art Babbit himself.
I also love how old arabian palaces had their sewer systems on the outside of the walls. XD
This is actually a very interesting film here. When I saw the Nostalgia Critic's review on it, I was really intrigued by the animation, so on his request, I came and saw this. So far, it did not disappoint.
Holy shit! I've literally had fragments of this film in my mind, without remembering the title, for 15 years! I'm surprised the creepy ass animation didn't phase me as a kid.
@RisenAngel17 No the original version of this film wasn't particularly meant as a kid's film. Just because it's animation doesn't mean it's only for children.
@TheHeadbanger93 I think Garret only sold those DVD's to his friends and co-workers on the Recobbled Cut. At least, we can watch this for free and in great quality.
@NLSJ Wrong. This is more of an art film aimed at more mature viewers. You're thinking of "Arabian Knight" or one of the many other titles given to the abomination that was Miramax's version.
I'm sorry. But.... YumYum's face at 5:10 through 5:12. I can't stop laughing.
But really, this version is wonderful. I adore Tack and his ability to stay SILENT; it makes him much more of a likeable and quirky character than in the other version.
Oh wow I remember seeing the trailer for this when I was a kid I was dying to see it but I could never find it under the name used in the trailer. Now I find out the named was changed!!!! Gah!
Now I'm going to watch all three versions so I can see just how much they changed it.
I never realized I loved how much Tack didn't have a mouth, until I watched Nostalgia Critic's review of the actual movie and he showed a clip where tack talked and I got sooo pissed off at the idiot who ruined this beautiful movie.

@SomeFluffer64 i remember watching shorts for it on the Swan Princess videos (released around the same time)...tho it was called "the Princess and the Cobbler", not teh the Theif...but still. this is an amazing piece... ^_^
O_o wow....they start it THEN??!! that's absolutely stunning!
when the screen goes fuzzy and there are scenes with hand drawings are those the scenes that got added in or something? I'm really confused with those.
@mrsanimal0lover It basically explains in the description, the original version of the film was never completed so this is an attempt to finish it the way it was intended, using old storyboards and sketches.
The cobbler.... doesn't have a voice? THAT'S FANTASTIC! I love how he is almost a bland and un-unique character in this version, and yet he can affect so much! For me, that's what made this film less comparitable to the story of Aladin. I laughed while watching the nostalgia critic's review of this, but watching this.... completely different movie. I'm almost shocked and im going to watch the end :D
@kingt34 funny, i watched this movie a lot of times as a kid, and what i remembed most was the shoemaked and the scene where he sews the hearth... i didn't even remembered of cared for the thief.
@sagesaria There seems to be this fear nowadays that children just won't have the patience for a silent character. Which is really pretty insult to kids in general!
@NeverDoubt1 No kidding...heck, I can name a lot of things from my own childhood that had little to no dialogue that I loved then and still do now...most of them from Disney, in fact.
One thing that i already notice that makes this better then the other two butchered versions is the way the princess acts. To me, she's acting more like a regular sassy teenage girl instead of a typical princess. The way she calls the king daddy instead of father, and just the way she talks in general. (Just my thoughts)
@GilliganKrueger0829 Funny how Mirimax went through all that trouble making Yum Yum seem more "independent" when she pretty much was a great character already. ;)
Who knew the thief was Super Mario?

when the screen goes fuzzy and there are scenes with hand drawings are those the scenes that got added in or something? I'm really confused with those.

@mrsanimal0lover It basically explains in the description, the original version of the film was never completed so this is an attempt to finish it the way it was intended, using old storyboards and sketches.
NeverDoubt1 9 months ago
@NeverDoubt1 Oh, i see. What a shame this would have been amazing if this was ever finished! Compared to the other versions that came out.
mrsanimal0lover 9 months ago
@mrsanimal0lover Scenes that were cut that were meant to complete the story, they were never completely finished.

...the creepiest of creepers, that fella. Heheh, accidental nightmare fuel much, having him around while you're not aware of it.

Oh my gosh. Tack is one of the most adorable characters EVER!

@kingt34 don't even mention that critic hack on this masterpiece movie...

I don't think I'll ever look at Disney's Aladdin the same way again.

Tack is so cute! Why did Miramax think he needed a voice-over? His body language tells you everything just fine.
sagesaria 10 months ago 6
@sagesaria There seems to be this fear nowadays that children just won't have the patience for a silent character. Which is really pretty insult to kids in general!
NeverDoubt1 10 months ago 8
@NeverDoubt1 No kidding...heck, I can name a lot of things from my own childhood that had little to no dialogue that I loved then and still do now...most of them from Disney, in fact.

Those guards remind me of the vikings from The Secret of Kells. Thumbs up if you agree.

Does anybody know the name of the songs that play at 1:59 (when yum yum breaks her shoe) and 4:28 (when yum yum and tack are interacting)?
GilliganKrueger0829 10 months ago
One thing that i already notice that makes this better then the other two butchered versions is the way the princess acts. To me, she's acting more like a regular sassy teenage girl instead of a typical princess. The way she calls the king daddy instead of father, and just the way she talks in general. (Just my thoughts)
GilliganKrueger0829 10 months ago 3
@GilliganKrueger0829 Funny how Mirimax went through all that trouble making Yum Yum seem more "independent" when she pretty much was a great character already. ;)
