The explosion wasn't fake. The bullets were hitting the ground until he adjusted his aim. Once one bullet hit the car, it ignited Red Jackets famous exploding targets and C4 which made the car go BOOM. Really, its not that complicated.
@beast1517 well maybe except for the fact that c4 needs blasting caps to explode. Maybe once the bullet hit something, it set of a trigger which blew up the c4.
