Chester Thompson and Daryl Stuermer are not even official members of the group, However, they are the essential session musicians at Genesis and Phil Collins solo gigs as well. By the way in my humble opinion the best lineup was Collins Rutherford, Banks, Hackett. Peter Gabriel is an absolutely perfect singer, but in Genesis terms I prefer Phil.
If you look at 'Live Over Europe' oder 'When in Rome' you'll find the statement: 'Genesis are: Philip Collins, Michael Rutherford, Anthony Banks, Daryl Stuermer & Chester Thompson'
agreed that CAS has some good songs and all, and i wouldnt mind seeing this lineup, but to call it Genesis is blasphemy. Rename to something else, calling this genesis is dragging the name through the mud
Peter Gabriel's genesis was hands down the best one... but this is still awesome and one of my most listened to genesis albums. but well it is all a matter of opinions and musical tastes
Although I hate this whole album, this song is awesome. But Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Chester Thompson and Daryl Sturmer is Genesis, not Ray Wilson and Tony Banks and Mike.
Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett, Phil Collins that make up the true Genesis in my opinion. Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Chester Thompson and Daryl Sturmer is great i agree, they got genesis where they are today, but ill take the original lineup anyday :)
God I love this album. I had third tow tickets for St. Louis when they canceled the tour. I get goosebumps at the end when Tony,Mike and Ray our walking away. It kind of sums up the experience of the whole album. CAS lives forever!
I'm ashamed to admit that when originally released, CAS was one I listened to (if one can call it that) and promptly shelved. Having grown up during the Collins years and was just getting used to Gabriel (retroactively) I did not "get" CAS. What a shame cause now I think it's fantastic! I never tire of it and believe it was ahead of its time. Listen to Small Talk about 3:24 thru 3:40 and you'd swear it was Pete! Damn, wish these guys would try again. Our loss.
massively agreed from my side! it's quite a shame they ignored the 'wilson-era' on their turning-it-on-again-tour. they should've given ray more time to develop his own place in genesis, which he strongly deserves. :-) thumbs up for ray wilson, and the beautiful CAS album :-)
For members in the UK (don't know about anywhere else) The CAS bonus CD/DVD is now avalible in record stores. I ordered 2 for relatives in US. They didn't have any instore, because it sold out.
I was wrong when I said, CAS only did well in the UK & Europe. It was a top 20 album in Canada.
LoveRay2, you have a point about the critics' assessment that "Calling All Stations" was a Tony Banks solo album of sorts. The biggest beef I had with "Calling" was that Banks' synths tended to be far too much in the forefront of the songs, and pushed Mike Rutherford and Ray Wilson into the background. Wilson was a fine vocalist.
For the record, Banks himself admitted that he has a tendency to self-indulge, and also that he didn't fully utilize Wilson's talents as a vocalist.
When and where has Tony Banks admitted he self-indulges? A link would be helpful. Everything I've read about Banks and Genesis in general is they didn't write songs to show off their own personal sound or instrumental prowess but simply to write strong songs.
And you can't listen to a track like, well, "Not About Us" or "If That's What You Need" and say Rutherford and Wilson were pushed back in the mix and that CAS is a "Tony Banks solo album".
Sure, CAS was scoffed at by many long-time Genesis fans, and it was a huge U.S. flop, but it REALLY wasn't THAT bad an album! Ray is no Phil (or Peter), and I miss Phil's drumming, but I've heard far worse! (Van Halen 3 with Gary Cherone, anyone?? Can you say "HUGE ATROCITY"??)
Actually, he didn't join their SECOND album, after the album was released, John Mayhew, the original drummer, was fired, and Phil auditioned at Peter Gabriel's house---I think?---and the band knew Collins was their drummer.
Phil didn't "join" Genesis until their third album, when they were just a little known progressive rock band with a boring live act. They gained fame when Peter Gabriel started dressing up in costumes. Phil Collins is a great musician. Examples: "A Trick of the Tail", "Wind & Wuthering". He also isn't a drama queen...
On the subject of CAS, this actually had potential. But no, we Americans were so angry that Phil Collins left. *sigh*
Different but good album. Sorry, the fans usually do not like it, but I understand it. I hated it but with every next listening I become to like it more. Anyway, the era of PG will never come back... :(
At the time "Calling All Stations" was released, a lot of the old guard of the 70's and 80's became unfashionable, and Genesis suffered greatly because of it. This was perhaps the only song from the album that seemed to fit in with the music of the time. The rest of the album was good, but sounded dated. However, I thought Ray Wilson was a fine vocalist, which is why I felt they deserved better, but they only sold 75,000 copies of "Calling" in the U.S. Not enough for another album obviously...
oh come on! ray wilson is *not* "typical-90s-pop". listen to his change and the next best thing albums, THEN listen to the standard popular music fare that you hear on the radio
Actually, I have. While this sounds pop to me, I do like him better as a solo artist. *cites "How High"* I've always believed that he was better as a solo artist.
GitarStu, you're right unfortunately. It was "Invisible Touch" and several of the Phil Collins-biased tracks on "We Can't Dance" that pigeonholed Genesis into lightweight popsters. The latter-day Genesis before Ray Wilson did "CAS" was nothing more than an extension of Collins' solo career, which redefined lightweight pop, and not in a good way.........
The shouts and applause of many years, can turn to indifference in such a short period of time! We live in a generation of people who have a very short concentartion span.
Imho Pete was the most charismatic Genesis singer by far. Phil was technically the best. Ray was very soulful, and especially this song is one of Genesis' best. But the best Genesis era was "Nursery Crime" to "Lamb lies down...".
1998 was one of the best years in my life until now. Genesis with Ray is one of the reasons why I say that! It was a great time with lots of new people and experiences for me.
Been a die hard Genesis fan for 25 years. Collins was the man. Genesis was more than him though and this still has class although he is not there. Listen beyond the singing and the Genesis sound is there. Wilson is good but it was too much to live up to and too many nit picky fans to please.
Not about Us is a great song, but the CAS album was badly produced, and the US Music Industry decided to ruin this line up, before they even heard the music, just because there was no phil. some B-sides were better than half the album.
The 'Long Haried Guy' Is called Ray Wilson (No relation to porcupine tree's guitarist). He has left. phil is back. Pete and steve had said they might consider returning as well in two or three years. who knows?
respect their talent...no matter who front them genesis talent was their ability to move and adapt too bad most of us can't follow suit...The world could be such better place.
tank you very much for this video!!! I never saw it before. Calling all Stations is one of my favorites genesis albums. The Album was underated. This is a great song and video. It's really easy to get the message, read between lines...

But CAS is one of my most listened to Genesis albums. A follow-up with Ray would have been great.

Well at least CAS gave us a better shot at Ray Wilson... after that album I bought Mind's Eye and now the latest stilskin album.
CAS was great and we all now know Ray's talent.
A second genesis album featuring WIlson would've been awesome IMO

The music critics didn't blame Ray for this. They called it a Tony Bank's solo album. Mike & Tony were blamed for their songwriting. Not Ray.
Ray's a strong vocalist. They should've stayed with him.

Hell no! Ray turned Genesis around and bought them into a new ear. CAS is one of the finest albums Genesis put out.
If anything, the pop rock crud they did in the prior two albums killed Genesis. No one gave Genesis a chance after that.
