Omg, i love rays. They're so freaking pretty. <3 I only got to feed one once. and it was half of a fish and the ray just came up and sucked it right of my hand, they're so sweet and love interaction. aw. (:
Thats cool.... how much would it be if u got a baby one bease i would get a baby to start off with so it can get used to me and not havng to get stung...
I love how she charges up before attacking it. I always wanted one but I currently don't have the money to buy a big enough tank for one but hope to be able to sometime in the future
I've got a 350 gal. tank. I also have a peacock bass (18in), red bellied pacu(16in) and a red tail cat(15in) in that tank. I'm mentioning this because I am wondering the compatibility a stingray would have with those tankmates. I know stingrays and catfish are don't together but rtcs wouldn't suck on the ray's slime coat like others. But can someone tell me if this will work out.
I just purchased a ray, and it seems to be acclimating well to my tank. However, should I go out and buy some sort of soft sand to throw over the gravel? At the store, they didn't mention anything about him needing sand. (And of course, I want him to be happy :])
A stingray is actually part of the shark family. These animals' growth will not be restricted by the size of the tank. They will grow to their full potential regardless of their surrounding environment. This ray will have an 18 inch disk when grown and will be kept in an appropriate sized tank. There are hundreds of different varieties of freshwater rays. Most do not grow to enormous weights, but they still can get too large for most common aquariums.
Like do u know that the stingray can grow as heavy as 1000 pound be careful and pls tell me that stingray grows depending on the size of the tank? PLEASE TELL me!!!
wow did u know what the teeth looks like its like a jiant meet grinder and a suction force opens up when it traps it victam and sucks it into its meat grinder like teeth and i figured this out on discovery channel so this is correct
@vilemonkey3 false. her jaws are strong, but no teeth. she eats out of my hand and sometimes bites my finger by accident. Just a hard jaw bone, but no teeth to speak of.
i dunno about what the species is called but even these freashwater stingrays grow to like 50cm+ so might want a big tank before thinking of getting one
can u use well washed play sand for stingrays i have a 170gallon tank and am setting it up for a stingray and am trying to find what sand to put in tank
dude if we feed it ghost shrimps its cruel. normally they feed it brine shrimps. Ghost shrimps are counted as pet. Unlike you are going to let your iguana get eaten by your pet dog and you feel happy or exited. But in natural its ok but he purposely did it.
actually a dog eating an iguana isnt natural and that would be weird to get joy out of watching that. Are you really going to get like that over shrimp? Thats what THEY usually feed it what if they were in the wild and decided to eat these shrimp
any animal is considered a pet. ghost shrimp are like 50 cents. many fish eat them as food. they are expendable, that's why they cost so little. just as fisherman go to petstores to buy goldfish as bait.
@joshua11115 brine shrimp could also be considered a pet. fw rays eat small shrimp all day in the wild, and pet stores sell them for a buck for ten of them, they are used as food.
Sand does look like a PITA... but i was looking around, would a really fine gravel (not quite sand, sort of like Nerds candy size) work well? I've seen it before, i was thinking maybe it would be easier to clean.
@thejava1 any smooth substrate will work. It is important to use a substrate that will not injure the animal's sensitive underbelly. Many people do not use substrate at all, but just leave the glass bottom.
4k3el as long as you treat a stingray with respect dont bother it where it gets mad or scared but if you clean your aquarium and your hands are always in it you should be fine becuase they will be use to u in the tank
i think they'l die if you cut it of. it's like cutting your leg of you just bleed to death lol. besides they are predators best to leave them alone before they make you their prey lol
@4k3el she sheds her stinger about every two months. I find them laying in the tank all the time. The are quite impressive and intricate. She has never even attempted to sting me. She loves to swim into my hand, I give her little rides around the tank. She really seems to enjoy that for some reason. She also loves her belly rubbed.
@backwater83 That's so awesome! I want one now! Gah! i love fish I can interact with. My gourami and betta are like that. The platies and mollies just try to nibble my arm when I arm arranging plants in there. Fatasses.
the people that dont use sand leave the stingray so stressed out just because ther to lazy to clean the sand. If your going to huose a stingray give it a good home
DO NOT PUT ANY CATFISH IN WITH THE RAYS. What happens is bottom feeders often suck on things. They will suck on the rays disk and cause wounds. Arowana should be OK as they live at the top of the water column.
hmmm can someone tell me if its okay to have a freshwater stingray and corydoras in the same tank, I did see them together in one aquarium with neon tetras and stuff, but I just want to make sure.
If you saw them in a tank with tetras and stuff, the tetras and stuff were food..! These guys can only have certain fish as tankmates. I've tried many and many fish have died. The only thing she will allow in her tank with her are archer fish. The archers only hang out at the top of the water column. Also, for whatever reason, she has granted a reprieve to two feeder fish, which are now large goldfish. She seems to have taken a liking to them.
Freshwater only...no salt. In fact, salt can hurt these guys. As far as tank size, mine is now in a 55 gallon tank, but I'll move her shortly to a 110. I've done someresearch on these guys and have found that scientists don't know a lot about freshwater rays. They may live to be 100 years old and they could grow between 12 inches to over 3 feet in diameter, depending on the species. So, obviously your tank size depends on the ray. This one is called a Hystrix.
So basically these things will eventually outgrow their tank, then the owners will let them go and it could possibly become the newest fad/invasive species. Sounds great!
Well, responsible aquarists don't dump non-indigenous species into lakes and rivers. Don't you have a tree somewhere to hug or a whale to hump? Somewhere out there the three footed titmouse is being decimated by the deforestation of the glades...... boo hoo!
@backwater83 hahahahaha amazing response. and do you think my ray will have a problem being housed with a silver arowana. I personally don't think so but im youre more knowledgable.
@BTuna1 Fish generally stop growing due to the size of the tank. Example would be a fish that grows to 12" will stop growing at 6" in a 10 gallon because it doesn't need to grow any more.
I haven't got a clue.. I used to raise them, but that got out of hand quickly.. The pet store I used to buy them at closed. Most pet stores sell them as aquarium fish and charge fifty cents a piece for them. That gets expensive when my ray can devour 4 dozen of them in one feeding. Mine finally decided that she likes worms. I've been feeding her nightcrawlers for a year now, occasionally I'll buy some shrimp for a treat.
Hehe, my motoro does the same thing. Hand feeding him earthworms is great and all, but there's something especially wonderful about watching the hunt and the pounce. :]
really now? well the ghost shrimp i know are usually about 2-4" in length and orange. and i'm pretty sure that those are grass shrimp cuz they are grayish and are in the tradition from of shrimp
it dosent matter if they sting u ne ways because they are harmless the most freshwater rays can do is make a nasty wound an burning just run it under hot water and get a shot n ull b fine =)
Truth be told, scientists know very little about freshwater rays. They know less about their toxins. While they wouldn't be fatal, they say a sting is about 10 times more painful than a bee sting.
One cool fact is, they estimate their life span to be 100 years in some cases...!
I think I paid about $100.00 for her, maybe a little more or less. She will only eat live food: minnows, feeder fish, snails and ghost shrimp. SHE LOVES GHOST SHRIMP. I have been trying to get her to take frozen food, but no luck yet.
not at all dangerous. regardless of what you've read. i feed mine by hand sometimes. they only use their stingers as an exteme last resort. mine is the friendliest creature i have ever owned. I have four kids and they all handle her. She'll let you hold her in the water. you won't have any problems.
Yes, a few freak accidents and we should fear them now? Dogs have attacked children and even full sized adults but seeing a dog and i'm sure your not running for the hills.
to let you kno these were marine 100 million years ago when mountains rose they got stuck in freshwater little by little the salt went away adapting them to freshwater.
well why would you touch it? and the flys up when you stand on them like a automatic response so unless you stand on it you should be fine. and obviously don't upset it
Just typical marine sand substrate. She'll do fine with small smooth gravel though. Some like to use no substrate at all. I use the sand so she can bury herself and have a sense of security
what is your saltwater level at? like 10-15? just wondering.. i want to buy a stingray, too lazy to do the research yet (cant you tell, im on youtube) write me a line..
She eats ghost shrimp and feeder fish mainly. Won't touch the frozen food, it has to be alive. Yesterday she started eating earthworms, it's kind of a breakthrough for us as she has never even gave them a sniff before.
Thanks, not necessary though, she perked up last night and is now back to doing her happy acrobatics in the tank. Dunno what made her act like that, but she's sure over it now.

marine water has its own bio diverse preditory and preyitory system. its all open water thousands of miles in diamiter!

Sorry about the Romney08 name. I was logged in under my son's account and didn't know it. Didn't want to confuse anyone.

What type of sand are you using?
Tubby72227 3 years ago 2
Just typical marine sand substrate. She'll do fine with small smooth gravel though. Some like to use no substrate at all. I use the sand so she can bury herself and have a sense of security

i didint realize rays could pounce like that. what all will they eat?
ericyey27 3 years ago 3
She eats ghost shrimp and feeder fish mainly. Won't touch the frozen food, it has to be alive. Yesterday she started eating earthworms, it's kind of a breakthrough for us as she has never even gave them a sniff before.

Hmm.. No thats not a behavior that i have seen.. try a make a 30 % water change.. If that works, do another 25 %..
Kind Regards Anders.. :)

Thanks, not necessary though, she perked up last night and is now back to doing her happy acrobatics in the tank. Dunno what made her act like that, but she's sure over it now.

Yours is looking good..!
Kind regards..

She just shed her stinger two days ago and has been acting pretty lethargic. Do your rays go through a 'glum' period when they shed theirs?
