Did you have any issues with errors, check engine lights, or mechanical issues? Do you know if you had to relocate any sensors? Did you notice any improvements such as faster turbo spooling or lower EGT?
Removing the cats out of a diesel exhaust (removing the restriction) can give you up to 50 nm of torque gain on standard power? usually. im not saying your wrong :) just peculiar thats all :)
i have an 01 jetta. taking the cat out makes like no difference and watch out for timing belts from ebay they suck. i had to redo the head on mine cuz the belt was the wrong size and broke. i recommend going to the dealer for at least the belt.
@bradlee2010, I actually did it myself, the flex pipe coming out from the turbo was bad so i just cut it out along with the cat, and replaced it with a 4' section i got from Advanced Auto for $30. A few days later I decided to cut out the mufler as well, I replaced it with a 2.25" stainless pipe i had lying around. Since the stock pipe is 2.125" the 2.25" pipe slid right over it and i just clamped it.
@bradlee2010. it was preventative maintenance, if the timing belt breaks, it can ruin the engine. it was $200 for the timing belt & water pump, and about $300 to $400 for the labor (don't quite remember). I bought the parts on ebay and had a local mechanic do the work. VW dealer wanted $850
does it throw a check engine code after you pull the cat off. also how many miles does yours have, and have you had to change the timing belt or water pump?
@bradlee2010. There is no oxygen sensor or anything in the exhaust system so i don't think the engine is aware of the missing cat. it has 167,000 and i changed the timing belt and water pump at 105,000.
@SheaClayFarms1. Yea I just cut out the muffler and replaced it with a 2.25" stainless pipe. I also removed the catalytic converter to test if I could see a difference in performance.
@nacco88, The car definatly has more power, but i've done a few things to it. added a tuning box , bigger injector nozzles (.205mm), K&N air filter, and straight pipe exhaust. I was expecting my fuel economy to drop a bit but I took a trip to florida and i still get 47 mpg. My theory, the car has more power which results in less engine strain resulting in less fuel consumption. So I have a quicker more powerful car and still very fuel efficient. But city fuel economy did drop its about 36-38 mpg
@nacco88, I do want to say, the straight pipe exhaust by itself does not really change performance, at least nothing noticeable. So its probably not worth doing, mine is temporary because i still need the cat to pass inspection.
ur a fag for doing that to a car. it sounds like shit your car is not gonna get pussy man.

Sounds awesome. I wouldn't trade my MK II 16V Golf GTI for anything but would love to have one of these in my collection.
Be careful in reverse gear, not sure about your trans but on the early versions romping on the throttle in reverse is a big no no. VW for life!
