Huge car, but... I don't know what other people may think, but I found the speed on track to be really low. Maybe the engine is weak, or the clutch engages too early? As a matter of fact this is a heavy truck, and 4 wheel drive hooks up lot of power too
This guy from Losi says one tank of fuel taking it easy for break in but I have been watching videos where the guys are running 1-2 tanks with the truck on blocks with motor at idle and then a couple more a low throttle-coast driving. Who's right on this the guy that spent $1600 for the truck or the guy who is selling replacement engine's when you blow one up?
CY engine are known to be weak since their a 2 bolt design, I'd take it as easy as possible to get all the gaskets through their heat cycles. Also look at Zenoah engines, their a 4 bolt design.
@lawnmowerdude Yes and no. There is enough of a gap between the exhaust stinger and the inside of the body that it really doesn't collect. I had my doubts too until I had a chance to run one for myself.
I guess looks can be deceiving. I bet I could take this truck and put it through 1 day of pace that I put my HPI 5T and I'm sure it would have catastrophic failure. It does look like a very stable truck but I've been looking at it run and tracking it on line and it's not holding up. Try again.
Hello and i am new to this hobby. Looking at this truck kept me drooling over and over untill i said enough is enough so i just went and bought 1 along with the DX3R Pro 3Ch DSM2 Transmitter Only. Mines will come tuesday 12-13-2011 Awesome job Losi.
my question is .. is even tho you have 3 sections of body panels to replace uppon specific damage to each one.. are the pieces them selves affordable ? for instance even tho you can replace them is one piece about the price of a plan clear body ? if so.. i would just put a hpi baja 5 sc on.. i just dont wanna end up spending tons of money replacing panals when i can just buy a body and be happy.
@HorizonRCdotCom thats actually quite expensive ... i dont think i would be replacing then if i broke anything.. i would just put a whole body on. i mean the panels make it look very scale and nice. but i just cant imagine spending that much money everytime i tear something up. Over all i love this truck but if it came to breaking a panel i would just take it all off. and get a full body
This truck is great! Two flaws though, the price, and the powerplant. Thankfully this is an RC truck, nothing RC holds its value so buying used will be the way to go, especially in a few years. The second issue is the engine, it's on the doggy side. Hopefully a brushless setup will be developed for it. Any plans for the 5ive T being available in kit form in the future?
I've always been looking at HPI's BAJA series, but this 5IVE-T is very nice. I'll definitely be considering this a 1/5th scale truck now!!! Nice work LOSI
Marketing this vehicle in this current economy will be very difficult... The crowd I run/race with work at Boeing & make 40,000$ a year & still opt for 1/8 & 1/10 & even the new 1/4 losi 8ight. Good luck losi- lol
it's funny that he said 'we wen't right to it and put the best of the best materials in it' and they still have a CY (Chung Yang) 26cc engine in it.......
$1500 is a reasonable rate giving what you get in the package. Good job. Don't own much Losi stuff personally, but THANK YOU for making a 4WD 1/5th stadium truck. Hopefully HPI, Traxxas and AE will follow.
do we have a defininte release date? ive had one on pre-order for 4 weeks now and the date has changed almost on a daily basis...some closure would be good as to when im getting my truck or i may as well take my business elsewhere if i keep getting stuffed around...
Bad ass!!! BAD ASS!! hpi better step it up there is a new bully on the block !! I love my Baja don't get me wrong but Lodi does it one notch better much like the xxl . The only thing I don't like is it does not come with a radio and it's 1600.00 dollars I have a dx3s but for the average Joe he is s.o.l!! good job losi!
where's the 1/5 monster trucks? this truck kicks ass along with 5t's, but where's the mt's? since the short course take-over, people seem to have forgotten how cool monster trucks are. A 1/5 4x4 MT would be a huge hit, the monster truck crowd is alive and well! The redcat rampage is ok, but where's that attempt from the quality companies?
Two thumbs up Horizon! When HPI released their 5SC I got all excited.. then I realized it was 2wd. I think it's lame that, (until now), you've had to buy low-grade to get 4wd in a 5th scale. Had I not just bought ANOTHER unnecessary real car, I'd be considering one of these beasts, lol.
If only gas power were to be further scaled down. I love nitro to death, but IMO the real draw to these behemoths is their engines simplicity & reliability, while still being internal combustion powered! :-)
@HorizonRCdotCom Not yet, there wasnt an 1/8th scale that had reverse till the revo. there wasnt a decent 1/5 that had 4wd, I just figured you would want to be on top. I already ordered mine, just hoping theres gonna be a reverse upgrade. will a dx2s be sufficient because you keep touting the dx3s, does it need 3 channels for some reason?
@hockey2826 There were a few models that had forward and reverse before the Revo. The DX2S will work fine, its just not as widely used of a radio is all.
@hockey2826 the 2 s is the best you have and you're getting a 1/5 scale? i say upgrade your radio before you upgrade your kit. btw, if your driving 1/5 scale and you need a reverse feature, you better stick to 10th scale or smaller
@NeXt559 No the 2s is not the best I have, I have a few dx3s, a few dx3.0's a few dx6i's a dx11, and about 20 other radio's but I like to have a transmitter for every vehicle so I can drive a bunch at the same time with my kids and friends( sounds like you dont have any of those). So why would I send an extra 50 bucks for n extra channel im not going to use? Also the bigger the car the more need for reverse, in case you havnt realized your 1:1 scale car might have it too! Everyone needs reverse
@hockey2826 referring to my rc vids? noice the latest one is from over a year and a half ago. sorry i didnt have a chance to make and post vids of all of my rc kits. lets just say i have an entire 4 car garage dedicated to all my rc stuff. notice the running vids of this particular kit is on a track. not sure where you've raced but from all the races ive participated in, a reverse function is illegal. and comparing driving an rc car to real world drivin... really? how often do you jump your car?
Why isnt the exhaust piped out of the body like in FG cars? Thats just gonna blow oily deposits over your servos etc. Double wishbone suspension is alot stronger and is 'industry standard' so dont see why losi are choosing single. My money still lives with FG, years of expertise and german engineering in large scale, simplicity strength and reliability at its best.
@Kyleashdown13 I have a FG-monstertruck. You don´t need double suspension, it is not better. A big shock is better for the control then 2 smaller shocks. I also think that the FG truck is hard to work with, I mean fun to drive, boring to maintain. But I agree with you on 1 point, the exhaust pipe. Here is a tip, buy a siliconhose or some other fuelhose that fits. I´m going to try once again to sell my FG and buy a Losi instead.
LOSI has done it to me for the second time. The peaked my interest for the first time in 5 years with the release on the TLR 22. Now they go and do it again with this awesome 5IVE T. If this had come out about 3 months ago it would be the only 1/5 scale off road vehicle I'd own. EVER!!!!
Wow!, way to go! Losi!, ya did it Again!. AWESOME! truck. You've given the hpi baja and other 5th scales a run for their money. I've always loved losi's. Like the fellow said they will make a better product if they're not 1st in the making of something new/different and can make something different if they want to with putting a lot of thought into a product to make it run awesome!. Super job losi!. I'll be getting one in the future.
Ok horizon ( losi ) now this is nice however ( new topic ) with the serpent 811 E coming out soon i feel that it will be eating all the current 1/8(including the 8ight e 2.0 ) manufactures lunches... Now you had and amazing run with the 8ight platform but with that bein out for years now its time for losi to step back up to the plate and be who they are and come out with something new ( better ) and keep evolving... ITS TIME ??? !!!
This truck looks awesome! i would defiantly want this over an other 5 scale truck out there but................................. it just looks kinda slow when they show it running on the track. i would hope its faster then it looks in person.
i have 1/10 highroller, on brushless setup, i cannot keep the tranny in it. namely the diff. the side gears usually strip off pretty quickly. The diff gear itself holds up, but not the spider and side gears. Have the same problem with my strike which is identical trans. Havent tried the ball diff due to costly part, and a little weary of the plastic holdin up to brushless power. Any suggestions? I need a permanent solution. gets old tearing the tranny apart all the time for the same reason.
What are the specs on the servos and there speed? Will the drive train hold up to the castle 5th scale brushless system? The local shop has these ordered,im really considering another 5th scale purchase and dont want to spend more on new servos. Whats the hp rating on the 26cc engine it comes with and is there a tuned pipe option and whats its price?
@lambotwentyseven I know what you're talking about. The 5IVE-T sounds different than any other truck, of any scale, I've ever seen or driven. Because of the way the gears are cut the driveline has a very distinct whine to it. As the RPM's go up and down the whine goes up and down in pitch. I guarantee you, as the person there doing the filming, these are both gas powered trucks and you're just hearing the driveline. I'm working on a "First Run" video that will demonstrate that even more.
@JVGmidi I see what you're referencing. That's a brand new diff so its not rust. It could be just the way the light hit and reflected off, I don't know.
We totally understand and appreciate everyone's comments and passion on the 5IVE-T. Please keep your comments G-Rated below, ie: no swearing of vulgarity. Please remember to keep things classy.
My first true R/C was a Losi JRX-2, my current is a 1/5 brushless 4x4 buggy (check my channel), my next may just be a 5IVE-T. This thing looks amazing!!!
So, I definately think there is not enough suspension travel. It looks like the strike jumping, and we all know that truck's fate... Look at pictures of the new HPI 4x4 5SC Flux in mid air and look how a truck is SUPPOSED to look like jumping. Great looking truck though guys, I like the body idea =]
Ive always been a Losi fan. with that said, I really wish that Losi would put this much thought into their smaller scale trucks. Most of their rtr 1/10 scale vehicles have a ton of weak points. A big problem that i have is the tranny's and diff's. its hard to get them to last long at all with any kind of power on them. We all need tough rugged and durable vehicles, NOT just in the larger scales
@coonce5 If you look at the releases over the last 12-months or so I think you can see that the Losi engineers are listening to this point and addressing it. The XXX-SCT and XXX-SCB are both rock solid when it comes to durability. A lot of that is due to the fact they're using proven Team Losi Racing components and designs. I'd put the transmission in the SCB or SCT against any other one out there, it's that good. The 22 RTR is the same thing.
$1600 is not bad at all. MCD and FG 4WD cars are even more expensive. The street price might be lower anyway. The HPI Baja was around $1500 when it first came out. Plus the 5ive has twice the driveline, which adds to the cost. I think this looks like a home run for Losi.
@TEMPEST0087 I've got a 1/5 Brushless 4x4 buggy and can turn it into an SC for a fraction of the cost of a 5IVE-T but damn, this truck looks nice! I've got vids on my channel of mine
@HiLuckyB With 2WD vs 4WD, no integrated telemetry, proprietary 2.4GHz system that you can't use with other transmitters, one-piece body that you have to replace (@$200!) if it becomes damaged vs the multi-piece design that you can replace just what's needed, 1/4-scale servos for both throttle and steering...and much more.
@HorizonRCdotCom this thing is awsome and has some great over standered parts but it would be nice to hit a lower price point like what happens in the smaller scale RCs when a new model with much better electronics like brushed to brushless and AM to 2.4 maybe hits 20 bucks more then what it replaced. but still with the price and im sad HPI taking out the 5T im glade i didn't buy a 2wd 1/5 yet. thank you losi and get ready to ship one to my door.
@Croozer I know this, I have a Baja 5B. It's been great, and I've not needed 4WD. Sure if your going to run it on a track then I'm sure it would win, But its still hard the find a track for 1/5 trucks.
Huge car, but... I don't know what other people may think, but I found the speed on track to be really low. Maybe the engine is weak, or the clutch engages too early? As a matter of fact this is a heavy truck, and 4 wheel drive hooks up lot of power too

Whats the hp rating on the 26cc engine it comes with and is there a tuned pipe option and whats its price?

at around 11 minutes, in the "racing" video with the two trucks it sounds like one is electric, or so i think
lambotwentyseven 5 months ago
@lambotwentyseven I know what you're talking about. The 5IVE-T sounds different than any other truck, of any scale, I've ever seen or driven. Because of the way the gears are cut the driveline has a very distinct whine to it. As the RPM's go up and down the whine goes up and down in pitch. I guarantee you, as the person there doing the filming, these are both gas powered trucks and you're just hearing the driveline. I'm working on a "First Run" video that will demonstrate that even more.

at 13.27 is there rust on the outdrive?
JVGmidi 5 months ago
@JVGmidi I see what you're referencing. That's a brand new diff so its not rust. It could be just the way the light hit and reflected off, I don't know.
HorizonRCdotCom 5 months ago
@HorizonRCdotCom okey thanks. nice car seems to be better then the other brands

We totally understand and appreciate everyone's comments and passion on the 5IVE-T. Please keep your comments G-Rated below, ie: no swearing of vulgarity. Please remember to keep things classy.

looks a bit under powered, i think a 4 by 4 1/5 scale should have a bigger engine than 26cc

My first true R/C was a Losi JRX-2, my current is a 1/5 brushless 4x4 buggy (check my channel), my next may just be a 5IVE-T. This thing looks amazing!!!
HeyGuysItsRob 5 months ago
So, I definately think there is not enough suspension travel. It looks like the strike jumping, and we all know that truck's fate... Look at pictures of the new HPI 4x4 5SC Flux in mid air and look how a truck is SUPPOSED to look like jumping. Great looking truck though guys, I like the body idea =]

KTMBOY1112 5 months ago
Ive always been a Losi fan. with that said, I really wish that Losi would put this much thought into their smaller scale trucks. Most of their rtr 1/10 scale vehicles have a ton of weak points. A big problem that i have is the tranny's and diff's. its hard to get them to last long at all with any kind of power on them. We all need tough rugged and durable vehicles, NOT just in the larger scales
coonce5 5 months ago
@coonce5 If you look at the releases over the last 12-months or so I think you can see that the Losi engineers are listening to this point and addressing it. The XXX-SCT and XXX-SCB are both rock solid when it comes to durability. A lot of that is due to the fact they're using proven Team Losi Racing components and designs. I'd put the transmission in the SCB or SCT against any other one out there, it's that good. The 22 RTR is the same thing.

Multi-section bodies. A no0duh idea if there ever was one.
I do want.

HeyGuysItsRob 5 months ago
P.S. Make it a kit please, people need to build their own cars so they know how to work on them.
Atheistprimate 5 months ago 2
Only $1,599.99. That is alittle high, Because the HPI Baja 5SC can be had for $1,279 RTR with a 2.4 radio.
HiLuckyB 5 months ago
@HiLuckyB With 2WD vs 4WD, no integrated telemetry, proprietary 2.4GHz system that you can't use with other transmitters, one-piece body that you have to replace (@$200!) if it becomes damaged vs the multi-piece design that you can replace just what's needed, 1/4-scale servos for both throttle and steering...and much more.
HorizonRCdotCom 5 months ago 7
@HorizonRCdotCom this thing is awsome and has some great over standered parts but it would be nice to hit a lower price point like what happens in the smaller scale RCs when a new model with much better electronics like brushed to brushless and AM to 2.4 maybe hits 20 bucks more then what it replaced. but still with the price and im sad HPI taking out the 5T im glade i didn't buy a 2wd 1/5 yet. thank you losi and get ready to ship one to my door.
blownutsmyass 5 months ago
@HorizonRCdotCom Yeah, it isn't 1,599 vs 1279? Its 1599 vs 1279!! Because you are getting a lot for your money with this thing from the looks of it!
