Thank you for this! Many say their best filmed performance was the Shea Stadium concert. I say this one is as good if not better. They are on FIRE and are shreddding it LIVE! Another reason why they were and always will be the best musical group in history. Who can do this today even with more advanced technology? No one.
I just watched The Rolling Stones perform at this same concert. After seeing The Beatles, my opinion is that The Fab Four absolutely DESTROYED their London counterparts. Just shredded them to pieces. Between George's PERFECT guitar breaks (the solo he does on "Can't Buy Me Love," for instance, is almost identical to the one in the recorded studio version), Paul AND John's harmonies and lead vocals (Never seen a better "Twist and Shout" or "Long Tall Sally")
... and Ringo's perhaps GREATEST live performance behind a drum kit (in "Long Tall Sally," he seemed to be possesed - almost like he wanted to destroy his drums), it's no wonder Mick Jagger inducted The Beatles into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987 (and not the other way around). The Stones were great, of course, even legendary, but this Liverpool band will always be THE greatest Rock Band in history.
@giligara30492 But wait you didn't mention Ringo's drumming in LTS. I mean the dude is a beast. Look at the combinations he's doing at the end of LTS MY god!!
I did mention it! Look at the continuation of my comment, which begins, precisely, "... and Ringo's perhaps GREATEST live performance behind a drum kit."
Heck yeah The Beatles were the loudest! And the audience went crazier for them. I have to say though that yes Keith Moon was a great drummer and incredibly fast, but so was Ringo Starr, plus we shouldn't forget that his drumming style influenced everybody in the later 60's!
wow!! Is this the first live recorded version of John taking a guitar Solo? ( 1st Solo? on "Sally"??)
Pretty wild. Pauls' vocal is imPOSSibly high & Soulful...LOOve the scream at 3.54 in "Love"... and George's solo kicks butt....on a 12 -String, no less!!! Looked like they were havin' a LOT of fun here- considering they likely couldn't hear too much over all the damn screaming!! THis klip shows definitively what a GREAT live band they were, under tough conditions. TOOO Much!!
@TheQuipetro It`s unfair to compare Roger Daltrey to somebody like Paul McCartney. Paul had more talent. He was a GREAT singer, songwriter, musician and artist. Daltrey is a very good singer, but he can`t play an instrument, nor can he write songs. Paul McCartney is a genius!
Wow! Sir Paul doing some of his early rockin' best! What great video clip! What a joy to see them all looking and sounding so good! Thank you for posting!
This might be their best performace of Long Tall Sally that I've ever seen. I love how John was mouthing the words, and then Paul bowed to George as he started his solo. Then Ringo was just destroying his drum kit, and John was egging him on. Brilliant.
But what about Paul? He's just playing and singing his ass off. That is what's great about the Beatles, there"s just no egos here, they perform as what Mick Jagger said: " the four headed monster:"......and they blew evreyone else away.....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Paul, John, and George did great. I'm not an expert on drumming, but Ringo's drumming looks and sounds very bad. It looks like he's just mindlessly pounding on the drums with no skill. It adds nothing musically to the song. In fact it kind of detracts from it.
You have your opinion , but if you really believe what you say then you really have absolutely no knowledge on drumming. Ringo could not hear a note of what the other 3 are playing here, no stage monitor speakers in 1964. His drumming is absolutely spot on. Set this to a metronome. He is rightly regarded now as possibly the most innovative and versatile rock/pop drummer ever. Ask Nicko McBrain, he'll tell you that as will Phil Collins..and they DO know about drumming.
@XanaduZune Oh love, you have no clue. Perhaps Sir George Martin (Beatle extraordinaire ) can enlighten you: “One of the best things about Ringo was how he flowed, he listened to his pals and picked up the tempo. His playing, when you hear him working with Paul on bass and the other guys on guitars, has soul. It was just remarkable.” AND "Ringo has established himself with a sound that was quite unique and is the best rock drummer in the world." June, 2011 to the Las Vegas Sun.
you can always tell when john is into pauls performance when he's mouthing the words as paul sings -also paul will mouth the words when john's doing a rocker-
@heidibear76 ...of course it was but where as John pretty much keeps to the same structure for his solo George improvises alot on his...and this particular performance George really nailed one!
I know - it was a joke. I was deliberately misinterpreting your words: hence the smiley face. In future I'm going to add "this is a joke" after everything I post on YouTube.
They used Vox 30, 50, 100 Watts and by the time they went Candlestick Park in 1966 the super Beatle model used with an output of 120W. The loudest recorded concert PA wattage was Atlanta in 1965 with 5000W. They were using the 100W model by Holywood Bowl in 1964 the 100W were not specifically made for the Shea concert,
I've been watching all of the NME performances that you have graciously uploaded. I love them all but I can really see why the Beatles stood out in the crowd. No one can touch them. So much fun to watch and listen to. They were truely the best.
