Google maps sucks ass for biking, for a start when you scroll up or down on your mouse it zooms in and out which sucks, you have to keep clicking center the location here sooo annoying and you can't plot a route because as soon as you want to plot something off the roads you draw a line and it won't join to the one you plotted on the roads which means you have to draw all of the roads in by hand.... pointless
ok so i used this and i know its in beta but this time googled messed up taking me straight to an alley that only airport execs are allowed to go, the security guard was scary
@Commando303X I've noticed in my area, the dashed green lines for suitable bike streets, seem to coincide with streets that have a shoulder on one or both sides, or streets with wide lanes.
Much of their trail data comes from Rails to Trails Conservancy, who maps out much of this. Consider supporting that organization if you want to see this expand. RTC also lobbies for government funding.
Well, now you know what to write to your government people. They are there for a reason get signatures and send it to one of your congressmen or something. Make politicians do something!
great, but need in the UK too! And other places! PLUS mountain biking specific would be really cool, with rated hardness, and the ability to have it work out offroad loops for you, suits to your skill level, and ride time available.
In The Netherlands we have bike paths everywhere and we use bicycles not just for fun or sport, but for basic transport too, so this function would be very appreciated here. Hopefully Google will implement this for us very soon.
well, some of them h8 google, thats true. they got a big prob with streetview! they don´t accept google makin photos of their houses, just as they would forbid civilists to look at their house while standing in front of it. what I say: theyre idiots and they wont stop it, they just delay it! luckily!
right...best part of the bike maps IS the Street View...so you can check questionable routes. I saw some silly video but I still think the German hatred in a hoax.
This is great! I can't wait to get this tool available across the world.
I'd also suggest that, to further support and promote the use of cycles, that in the 'directions' drop-down menu, you put 'cycling' as the default option, with 'public transport', 'walking' and then 'by car' following that.
Just privare message me your email so that I can send you an invite! I will also SUB you!

( Replying @SeikoPsycho ) While you're "enjoying" the violent hate-crime fantasy you're unable to "..get away with..", I'll fantasize how miserable it would feel being a bubble-butted-jelly-belly in a motorized easy chair--instead of experiencing the reality of presently having a resting heart rate at 48 beats-per-second with blood pressure at 108 over 60 (and a 29" waist-line at 180lbs). From my experience, both: "riders" & "drivers", have been complete jerks.
It's a great start, but there's more to do; for instance, I'd love to be able to combine biking with mass transit to get an optimal route that combines both.
Since having bicycled non-stop from California State University Stanislaus to UC Santa Cruz several times in either direction, it seemed comparing gmaps to personal experience was a perfect way to test how it would appear.
It appears to fail to show a single route from beginning to end travel, showing instead isolated islands of all possible routes within each community separated from each other--probably the cities documented bicycle routes. Local trips for now--longer ones require planning.
I especially like the "avoid steep hills" feature. However, how would one use this on the road?? I dont think it would be convenient to fiddle with print out maps while on the bike, or stop every time to see where to go.
This would be ideal if the bike rider has a Motorolla Droid phone with car windshield holder, so that the GPS tell the rider using voice commands where to turn. I recon, a wireless bluetooth headset has to be used as well for this to give ideal user experience.
Pretty amazing that my company spends $600K per year on adWords and can't get Google on the phone to answer a simple customer service question, but they have the resources to add useless functionality to Google Maps.
Great idea, but many roadies avoid bike trails because our speeds are too high to mix with strollers and kids. Nice feature that allows modification to Google suggested route. Text map is too large to use as a cue sheet; how about the ability to print it on quarter-pages, so it fits folded in our pocket?
