Oliver Stone is a chronic manipulator of facts in many of his movies. JFK is a prime example of this. Very little of what took place in the movie (facts) were true. He is a conspiracy type who has made millions on the backs of movie goers. So I'm not surprised this movie was fabricated to the extent it was. Yeah, movies are designed to entertain and I guess if Hayes real story was brought to the big screen, it most likely would have been rather boring. Still like the movie.

Almost everyone that sees this movie will recognize it for what it is - a fictionalized account of a young kid getting busted for smuggling hash, and the price he pays for it. I seriously doubt anyone's going to take this as a "fair and balanced" representation of Turkey or its people. It's the penal system, where you'll encounter the worst of the worst, in any country. Even in further interviews Billy talked about how the film wasn't accurate but some things are. he also takes responsibility, says he was stupid. i still agree with him. 5 years turns into life and it is not a just punishment for drug possession. he didn't kill the warden to get out. the sadism, the beatings by that one warden happened. (other guards were actually nice, normal men) why was Turkey so quick to want it banned at Cannes? beause they didn't want the torture and treatment shown.

This movie is not important due to its story line but because of the way it portrays Turkish people. After WW2 Armenians started promoting propaganda in hopes to change history and get the massacres in Anatolia during first world war rewritten as genocide. This movie leaves you wonder what to actually believe as it's supposedly untrue in certain areas. For instance, Hayes said Oliver stone added the in incidents that did not occur as Hayes denies killing anyone. He might be saying this because he could still be held responsible, but it could also be classic Oliver Stone as well. The real actor Brad Davis died 10 years ago, sad, he had a tough life, but he did a really good job in this. They should say loosely based on a true story...

Billy Hayes broke the law and got caught. Prison isn't supposed to be a nice place. I've read the book, and the movie is mostly fiction. It's portrayal of the Turkish people is almost entirely false. I don't even think there were any actual Turks in the movie, and whatever they were speaking wasn't Turkish.
