I think your first simulation is more accurate, unless they don't have any way of detaching. It would seem that the ability to separate from the descent stage would have been a design priority. Remember, the LM is coming down pretty slowly and the ascent stage launched with considerable acceleration.
I'd think they could abort at any point of the descent, but I really don't know.
well i think it has to do with how fast there descending,if there going too fast. i think that the second simulation would go great. but if there going really slow, the first one may happen.

well i think it has to do with how fast there descending,if there going too fast. i think that the second simulation would go great. but if there going really slow, the first one may happen.
