yeah, but the SLT technology has it downsides. I would do a little research on it first, you loose almost a full stop of light and there is a reduction in quality to do the light passing through the mirror. Plus sony has really awful noise performance in comparison to Nikon and Canon, i would be really hard pressed to purchase one of these for the toy-gimmick features. And the a77 with it's 24mp sensor.... yeah... thats about as useful as an asshole right here *points to elbow*.
i hear this camera is having lots of bad review regarding battery life...but as for performance im not sure if this new technology is better than non translucent mirror
@GATFOCT I know about it from the a55 review on the dpreview website. On the last page of the review you can compare many things about the a55 against its competitors, including high ISO performance. They also have sample photos taken at different ISO levels that you can look at.
@xxxXXXCH04XXXxxx itall depends on the lens that's attached; if I understand your question correctly. The camera kit comes with an 18-55mm/3.5-5.6
I've tried it and didn't like it at all. The 18-70 wasn't the greatest, but at least it provided with a little bit more zoom range. I don't know why they got rid of it. The 1855 is also very lacking with regard to image quality
@GATFOCT Actually I find the 18-55 rather sharp for a kit lense. My dad has a Nikon d7000 with an 16-85 lens that is surprisingly no sharper. We have tested the cameras in low light and with harsh side on sunlight to find that this lens somehow out performs the nikon 16-85 in some situations. Simply because it feels plastic doesn't mean that it is rubbish.
@zurijohn Thanks for the information. That it's plastic doesn't make me think that it's bad optically. That's just a matter of construction which I miss from the Minolta lenses.
I just found a bit more barrel distortion on the 18-55 than the 18-70. I haven't tried it against another brand though, so it's nice to hear that it has an edge somewhere. The reality I have to learn to face is that you get what you pay for. What Sony camera do you use, by the way?
@GATFOCT I had a Sony a350 with the 18-70, which I sold for a nikon d5000 with a few primes. Great little camera, but video without AF frustrated me. I now have a sony a55 with the 16-80. It does the trick. I had the 18-55 for nearly six months, before upgrading. I really don't see much of an improvement in image quality. Back to the 18-70, it did seem to have better build quality, but it was heavy on a small body. I prefer an even balance, especially when the hand grip is small like on the a55
@zurijohn Have you examined digital noise levels on the images at full size? I actually prefer no video because I'm mainly a still photographer, but I do know that life AF is much needed on video mode. I can't believe you got a Nikon and a few prime lenses for a Sony... Thanks very much for taking the time to let me know all that. Keep me updated on the a55
I read in the tech specs of these cameras that they record video up to 1080i, that means no 1080p? I'm kinda confused. I guesstheyt do record at 720p right? Thanks
SOB... I bought the canon T2i in in October, now this comes out... I got to buy this one now or self my T2i and get this with another low light lens.... buggers!
@bfg2600 The overheat its caused cause it enormous APS-C sensor inside the camera which means while it can offer full 1080p video recording it can't handle it for too long. The A55 manages just nine minutes video recording at 20 degrees with IS (image stabilization) enabled and again increases to the imposed limit of 29 minutes with IS turned off. My Canon EOS Rebel T2i can record 11 minutes before overheating start...
no manual control in video mode sucks......lighting changes mid shot....you can't preset the video settings...af searches when on a static subject...battery life sucks...overheats in only 10 minutes...........this and more brought to you by sony
I been on sony website for a while trying to decide what camera do get. And this is the one the face I can shoot pics and video is truly amazing this will be my first camera that I buy. Can't wait I going to pick up the camera tommorrow from the sony store.
noooooooo nooooooo I just fucking bought the sony a550 , fuck this is so not good , well Now I will be having 3 cameras , this is a must bay for its price
This is a great idea for video: currently in DSLRs, autofocusing during video capture is horrible because it uses the image sensor to focus using contrast detection.
However, if the mirror is translucent, it means that less light reaches the sensor than if the mirror would simply had flipped up, resulting in higher ISO and image noise and/or slower shutter speeds.
It would be good to have a traditional flipped-up mode for photos and a mirror-down mode for video.
The Best camera ever i seen

I dont really like Sony but all this new innovation has to be a good thing.
Lots of cameras AF quickly but the sound levels are atrocious if your shooting video.
You can hear it whirring away.
Does this one keep silent?

@zenoist2 well its pretty noisy but if you take the noise out video quality is awesome

Canon 7D is better for hd movie mode if it had a auto focus face detection !! So which one should I buy?
g5magic 1 year ago
@g5magic 7d is much better but extremely expensive
SkateSurfSnowMedia 1 year ago
@g5magic
The Canon should be better but it wil cost much more.
And no good AF search: "550D vs A55"
+ the sony has more carl zeiss lenses wich have some nice DOF and the good DOF on DSLR is what them make intresting for video.
personal I would never buy a canon my dad had 3 broken CMOS sensors In his canons over 6 years.
thats 3 times to much!
Sonys are very good I personal think sony's are better that canons but they are very new to the market. :)
(and sony would not put video on every DSLR!)

When you split 30 and 70 percentage light wouldn't you loose some light that would otherwise hit the sensor.?. (low exposure)
