  • Does anyone know what tuning Paradise uses?

  • That guitar tone during the chorus...

  • This song really calms me down after a stressful day, love walking home listening to it :)

  • how the heck the modern production makes all bands sound horrible MTV-metal for teens. The atmosphere and soundscape of this song makes me puke. I bet it would b a good song if made in a basic studio

  • Yeah, PL are making some of the best heavy metal music out there, heavy but not just noise, with a melodic structure but not over he top. Even their most "alternative" releases are good, the guys just know how to make good songs.

  • The words deceive the reason i believe!

  • I love this band. with a good earphones you can perfeclty hear every instrument. The two guitars have different sound, the bass is clear voice and drums sounds great.

This means be a great band too me.

  • Thats what i call some fucking good music

  • SOMEWHERE IN THE AIR

  • Its a fucking paradise lost song not metallica.Fuck metallica fuck hetfield fuck everyone and listen to the song.period

  • Thanks to Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride for pioneering this genre of music called Doom !!.. helps people like me get thru with this "misery" called LIFE !

  • @freakingbonnetli u should try Jesus a far better alternative imho but Paradise Lost arent bad either :)

  • /watch?v=Ecf9XSKrxtE

  • Definetely I have to listen more music of this band!

  • One of my favorite modern day songs from PL. Takes me back to the old sounds. Great doom metal. And who cares about the Metallica similarity in vocals. James Hetfield could never have lasted in this style of music and pulled it off with such grace, emotion, and power.Enough said

  • yeah, I kinda reatracted my comment on tonality, and moved on to their over-all sound, but if you just wanna keep arguing thats fine. Still haven't answered the question, what do YOU think they sound msot similar too? It was a question of the band's SOUND, not of ur opinion, but u must think u matter =) u don't, ur jsut another douchebag who surfs around looking to argue on Youtube.

  • fuck the 22 peoples who doesn't like this music

  • so....this songs over-all tonality is more akin to Korn....why is everyone comparing these guys to metallica? The vocals are obviously not korn, but everything else is, Korn. Strangely diverse band....

  • @Madderhatter85 Please elaborate.

  • @Madderhatter85 Hmm.. So.. You learned a word while reading some website on music theory no doubt, and had to go leave a comment somewhere to attempt to have some sort of knowledge? Aside from having de-tuned guitars/bass their sound (how you came to the conclusion THIS song remotely resembles the 'tonality' of korn is beyond reasoning) doesn't even vaguely resemble Korn. "but everything else is, Korn" Complete imbecile.

  • @Zem0nkey so, besides over-analyzing my comment, do YOU think this band sounds like Metallica? Or would the slow, grindy feel be more like KoRn? If you pick Metallica, I'd call you an obvious moron....

  • @Madderhatter85 Thank god Paradise Lost sounds nothing like both of them. And by the way, the quesion is stupid. In your opinion bands like Type O Negative and My Dying Bride would be Korn-inspired. Well actually this sound is way older and it´s called Doom or Gothic metal. Strange thing, isn´t it?

  • @crishnak well its a stupid question, but guess what, people ARE comparing them to Metallica, I honestly hear absolutely no similarities. Yeah heard of doom metal, I have ears...but (listen close to this part) BEING AS PEOPLE WERE COMPARING TO METALLICA, I JUST PICKED ANOTHER MAIN STREAM BAND THEY COULD MORE CLOSELY BE COMPARED TO, TO ILLUSTRATE HOW LITTLE THEY SOUNDED LIKE METALLICA, you fucking moron...but for SOME REASON...you keep running on about this n that. STFU.

  • @Madderhatter85 Well, it isn´t even that stupid to compare them with Metallica. But you have to go way back to the early 90s. They never were trash or heavy but there were some similarities. But things evolve and nu metal brought some changes to the sound of almost all bands, but just by the time, when Korn and their offsprings were the shit, Paradise Lost left metal behind to explore new sounds. So theres absolutly no connection between them and nu metal. And no, I won´t shut up. :)

  • @Madderhatter85 seriously all I did was make a statement, then you gotta come along and try to inject some kind of holier than thou BULLSHIT like you are THE authority on music. It was a fucking statement. Get over it. Get a life. N SHUT THE FUCK UP, you piss ant of a human being.

  • @Zem0nkey ok my apologies, let me make this easier for you to grasp, would this song's nature be more NU-METAL associated or more traditional-metal? I'd say it's more familiar with nu-metal....so.....you think what you want I'm more than aware...

  • @Madderhatter85 Lawlz, nice way to add insult to injury(on your own part). You are obviously unaware of anything, and thus proving my point that you don't know what "tonality" even means. Goodbye, say they sound like Korn all you want, I wont stand in your way of making yourself out to be a fool.

  • It was The Anatomy Of Melancholy. That tour was great :) I wasn't there but I have the DVDand this song is the 8th of 21 :DDDDD

  • enjoying !!!!!!

  • OMG??

    Who 22 people dislike it?

  • Century media... 666 videos!

  • Hail the fallen grade...praise lamented shade.....

  • ...I'm not really sure about this vid. I mean, I'm not opposed to live footage as a music vid or anything like that, but this is, in my opinion, THE best song on In Requiem, and as wonderfully atmospheric as it is, you'd think a really creative, really dark vid would go with it and not, well, live footage. Seems like a huge missed opportunity to me.

  • agreed.

  • Nice!!

  • Totalmente de acuerdo con Drakon222. Gran tema, gran disco,

  • BueN Tema!

  • Praise lamented shade

  • Forever seems so right. No god would do this to us. but us.

  • When I first heard this album, minutes later I had to try to pick up my mouth from the floor. It's even better than Draconian Times! Hell, I never say "best album ever" but I can say "best metal album I've heard so far".

  • diggin' it.

  • Love his voice. This is probably one of my favorites from Paradise Lost.

  • Probably, but it is not..

  • i love paradise lost... they are the most unique band ever... the lead guitarist(he who is a left handed guitarist) is a fucking masterpiece...

this is the sound i prefer...

  • thank god PL went back to gothic metal with this album, which is great!Their latest,"faith divides us-death unites us "is really really good as well.

  • Hail from FINLAND !!!!!

  • Saami!

  • The World was changed... I started with PL with Icon. I was young... there were young.

Where is the Icon, Shades of Gods & Draconian Times? Where is my youth?

    Its gone.

Thanks PL for many years, many immortal songs.

    As I die...

  • Mesmo com tantos discos diferentes, você consegue reconhecer a poesia e a melodia por traz das canções do Paradise Lost. Os caras são fodas!

  • The recent years could be called the era of "Getting back to your roots".

Paradise Lost with "In Reqiem", My dying bride with "For lies I sire" and even Metallica with "Death Magnetic".

  • @Drakon222 Hell Yeahh Ur Right!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • oyeaaah przechrzty dalej sie wstydzicie lost paradise i gothic?

  • Damn! Stop typing and listen! Who cares about the "Rock & the Pop Narcotic book" or "Joe Carducci's rejection of light pop music" FOR FUCKS SAKE SHUT THE FUCK UP AND ENJOY!

  • oh my god, shut the fuck up.

  • One more thing: I think this discussion shouldn't be like a chain of spam underneath this video. For continuation we'd better (all three) use the youtube mailbox. Just an idea. Just one more: lamentate07's general ideas as to what defines metal are ridiculously generalizing again. There are enough bands within the 'genre' that do the exact opposite. Let's talk about those, not the mass entertainment. Just as you'd do with all those 'sophisticated' genres.

  • i agree with most of Surrealistic Evening's points. Metal IS one of the least sophisticated genres of all rock sub-genres, and that explains why it's practically ignored by academics and musicologists. A lot of metalheads play the 'victim card' though, and claim that their music is simply misunderstood, but it isn't. Metal favours the technical over the conceptual, the linear over the spatial, and it's this preference of form that makes it vulnerable to attack from 'outsiders'.

  • Don't get me wrong, i love metal, and continue to support it, even if, from an innovation standpoint, nothing significant has happened in years, but there is a kind of insecurity with metal fans i believe that reveals itself in numerous ways. The most obvious one being how it's so enthusiastically linked with classical, despite not having much in common with it. But all they need is a few 'trained' musicians within the circle to say otherwise and people believe and act as if it's high art.

  • I understand that a lot of metal fans do not feel this way, and just treat it as a form of entertainment, but there are many whose perception of the genre is severely disconnected from reality.

As for Paradise Lost, great band IMO, and their new album is good too.

  • Obviously, I should have known better than come in a lousy youtube forum trying to generate a civilised, interesting discussion. Of course, it's always easier to personally attack someone by way of verbal insult instead of attempting to confute one's arguments.I didn't say I don't like heavy metal. I do, especially (traditional) doom. But I wasn't showing off or trying to preach to anybody. Just stating my opinion.

  • You make these 2 statements: "In my opinion, metal is the least sophisticated of all rock's subgenres" & "Many so-called "metalheads" listen to some lousy Dimmu Borgir clones or those crappy metalcore bands and when you play them Saint Vitus or Trouble say its boring!" A lack of sophistication is all yours, and you shouldn't be surprised being bashed here then. Furthermore, I disagree with your statements. If you want to, I'll discuss properly with you.

  • I sincerely respect your inalienable right to disagree with mine or anyone else's opinion. The thing is that heavy metal emerged as a musical genre in the late '60s/early '70s and is only one in a myriad others styles. What I particularly dislike is the deification of metal or any other musical genre.I think it's crucial for one to realise that musical forms that developed in the 20th century, such as jazz, blues, rock 'n' roll are incomparably more important for the evolution of music as a whole.

  • Furthermore, I believe that, especially nowadays, the greatest part of releases in the metal idiom are either artistically substandard or sterile immitations of things that happened in the '70s, '80s and '90s. Of course, its inevitable that one will become unpopular when making comments like these in a Paradise Lost comments section. My aim in saying all this, is that instead of listening to yet another PL album or watching a new Iron Maiden video, you might wanna broaden your musical horizons.

  • And forgive me if I am being preachy by saying that. It's a given that everyone is free to listen to whatever pleases him/her. I am just criticising what I perceive as being the fanaticism of metalheads as far as music is concerned. I may be wrong about that. But, what is your specific point of disagreement in the statements I made above? It would be helpful if you clarified that.

  • At the very least I disagree with your formulation. Now again, you say to dislike deification but would like to keep the broad perspective, and in the next sentence you claim other musical forms to be far 'incomparably' more important. Where does that leave you? Try not to generalize. I for one like a lot of artistic expressions within the musical, and would never claim such things. Every 'general' has loads of substandard releases if I may say so. This is no privilege of 'the metal'.

  • Furthermore, you can't define a genre by what the original cause of existence may be (even just that being quite impossible to pinpoint). I like crossovers of all genres for instance, when done with vision. Again, you do sound preachy when using general terms in artistic contexts. One more point: music is also often mass enjoyment and mass industry, make clear distinctions when talking about that or something else in the realm of music. There is no one thing. Sorry for the preach ;-).

  • Saying that some musical forms are more significant than others doesn't mean I am idolising the genres I am positively disposed towards. I don't see a contradiction in what I previously wrote. Also, I was very careful not to generalise. I didn't say that metal should be banned as a musical form altogether, what I said is that I like some forms of metal. But without blues and their evolution in blues-rock there would not exist heavy metal.

  • I agree with you that substandard artists appear in every genre and not only metal. Call me prejudiced, but all those lousy, black metal bands that bombard the market nowadays are not music, no matter how the word is defined. It was original back in the early '90s with the famous Scandinavian scene but today has become an endless parade of ridiculous, stupid morbid posturing.

  • I don't believe I am saying something new here. It's a given that almost all of the subsequent musical styles developed from the same original source which is the African-American jazz/blues idiom. You can't deny the historical facts. Even house and techno are rooted in the blues. It's true that music is mass entertainment but, primarily, it's an art form and as such it can't be confined in pre-existing, stereotyped notions of its nature, determined by the interests of record companies.

  • Well, you seem to have a sympathizer with lamentate07 there :-). Still, I don't want to talk about all those stupid black metal projects etc., just as much as I don't want to talk about all those visionless bluesrock bands or whateveryouhave. I want to talk about what 'metal' can stand for. Not about far-away roots that aren't to the point or claim-able either. One thing: you misunderstood me, I want you to distinguish between music as art and mass entertainment. You didn't.

  • To which visionless blues-rock bands are you refering in particular? The Jimi Hendrix Experience? John Mayall & the Bluesbrakers?Cream? To avoid any misunderstandings, I must say that my personal taste currently revolves around 1960s rock music, the San Francisco scene, psychedelic rock, folk-rock, blues, blues-rock e.t.c. I think that metal's roots are easily identifiable and there is a general agreement on which these are specifically. In your opinion, what is it that metal can stand for?

  • Let's begin from that. By the way, you are right: I didn't make the distinguish you mention. I guess I agree with Joe Carducci's rejection of light pop music (expressed in his "Rock & the Pop Narcotic" book) as being an entirely commercialised musical form, designed for mass entertainment and consumption. He was the first who attempted to present a defination of rock music and did so by specifying it as " small band music made conscious of itself."

  • I don't mind for the discussion to be "transfered" in the youtube mailbox but I just don't know how to use it. How do I open it? The thing with metal is that it constitutes a musical genre which is inherently inclined to contain more cliches and stereotypes than other forms. Of course, there exist metal artists who defy the traditional structures and traits which characterize this music and experiment with non-metal musical styles or blend metal with classical, jazz, folk, or even pop.

  • "To which visionless blues-rock bands are you refering in particular? The Jimi Hendrix Experience? John Mayall & the Bluesbrakers?Cream?" -you annoy me saying stuff like that, go figure. Furthermore, I did say I wasn't particularly interested in roots, generalizations etc. I am interested in art, passion, expression etc. Any music form can adopt those principles. Now, wanna talk open-minded or keep on making these useless statements?

  • First of all, you are explicitly hostile and perhaps prejudiced against what I have to say. But you are right that this discussion has become pointless because instead of listening to and enjoying music, we are trying here to over-analyse everything and all this is ultimately in vain. I am also interested in music as expression of human feelings since it's the human heart that music aims at (I know it's an awfully cliched expression) and not man's logic. But that wasn't the point of dispute.

  • I thought we were having an open-minded exchange of opinions, me stating my point of view and trying to defend it, you doing the same and all this with mutual respect. I never attacked the person who holds the opinion but, instead, the opinion in and of itself and I think it's a honest and fair way of conversing with another individual. If you feel otherwise,it's again totally respectable. In any case,I think you misunderstood what were my original intentions in making these comments. Nevermind.

  • My tone was indeed becoming hostile, only insofar as I felt that this was no discussion at all, just someone trying to make his/her point already established and not really open to maybe entirely different perspectives. It is still not the dominant trends I am interested in, but the creations/creators that stand out artistically (as you said: music as expression of human feelings). I didn't really see this discussion leading anywhere, but you could proof otherwise.

  • If I gave you that impression, then my apologies are due. But I suppose it's natural for one to try and defend his opinion. Thus, I find your attitude to be a little biased since my position was quite similar to yours. Instead, from the very beginning, you were acting like what I was saying was totally preposterous and absurd. So, if I get it right, what you suggest is that attempting to assign certain universal characteristics to any given musical genre is impossible or even undiserable.

  • Consequently, we should abandon the generic and instead focus on the artistic merit of each individual musician regardless of genre. If that's what you meant, then I, more or less, agree. However, you do realise that scientific activity is based on inductive reasoning so that the universal laws behind random events are discovered? I know it's a model taken from physics but chances are it does apply in the study of the history and nature of music as well.

  • If one denies that, then what's left is just plain Relativism. My aim was to draw some conclusions which would universally apply to artists belonging to heavy metal while, at the same time, keeping in mind that every law has its exceptions. But I am not sure if it's a feasible task. It may be completely pointless and the truth is it's such a complex matter that I can't really decide.

  • I admit you must have been right about me being a bit unfair, as I was in some way doing the same as you were doing. Now what you say about inducing, I would like to oppose that with the possibility of deductive reasoning. I think that might, in this case, lead to more satisfying results. It would mean to listen first at all times. So yes, I think universal conclusions are hard. We can draw them historically (what has been), but not artistically (when talking about potentiality, ideas etc.).

  • Allright, if you put it this way, I agree, although I have a few objections. I think it would be best to end this conversation since clearly everyone else is annoyed and most of our comments (well, mine really) will be soon marked as spam.

  • Okay then, I guess you're right, we're not only getting on our own nerves, but also on other people's, and some don't seem to like that itchy feeling ;-). But I'm sure we'll both keep on thinking and developing on these subjects :-). All the best.

  • and now in greece

  • wow why would one be a smartdick who knows everything and teaching it to everybody else?FOAD.enjoy whatever you like faggot.

  • paradise lost..... fucking epic shit....

the trailer for their new song is soo amazing... im in band (like symphony kinda thing) and pretty obsessed about it... soo its like orgasm in my ear hearing that kinda metal with that....

  • agreed. and its also shitty when i hear ppl bitch about Metallica's album they did with San Francisco's symphany. I had 12310283712 orgasms over that shit.

  • honestly, that album was pretty lame, comparing to other albums other bands recorded with symphonic orchestras. you could hardly hear the orchestra in most songs, which made it 75% thrash 25% symphonic. not to mention metallica is very entry level metal for the most part. try dream theater's score dvd, that's a real masterpiece.

  • love it

  • Paradise lost rules!!

  • pl haven't done much for doom but they sure are one of the most influential bands for the gothic genre. even if their first album was actually pure and superb death metal. best band ever.

  • Nick Holmes Rulezz

  • BRUTE!

  • The GREATEST METAL, NO! THE WORLDS GREATEST SONG!!!!!!!

  • Fucking song!

  • i love this band my fave goth metal band and moonspell and katatonia

  • The truth is that Black Sabbath created doom metal with their eponymous track and album in 1970.Second generation doom bands such as Trouble,Saint Vitus and The Obsessed helped further define the genre in the '80s.Therefore,saying that Paradise Lost invented doom equals saying that perhaps the oldest of all metal genres was born in the '90s when it's actually 40 years old.

  • I agree, but I don't think it's wrong to say that Paradise Lost renewed Doom Metal and doing so invented Modern Doom Metal (and Gothic Metal, for that matter). I mean the use of growls and the combination of a Death Metal sound with old Doom Metal ways. Anathema and My Dying Bride took it from there and gave their own flavour to the genre.

  • Yes, but there is a big difference between the word "created" and "renewed" which you used. I agree that they renewed the genre since they blended doom with death metal although it's doubtful if they achieved it first.I suppose everyone admits that they are the fathers of gothic metal. There was a guy here on youtube who was actually claiming that all doom metal is death metal influenced which couldn't be further from the truth (death emerged as an independent subgenre in the late 1980s).

  • We agree. The problem with categorising things is that categories are fuzzy. What one finds to be the key component of a category might not be regarded so by someone else. I mean, it is virtually impossible that we all agree to what the necessary and sufficient conditions of something have to be for it to be put into a category. Is slow tempo sufficient for something to be within the Doom category? Is it a necessary feature? Are growls essential or accessory? Not everyone would agree, I guess.

  • I think it's true that there will never be a general consensus about the essential features which distinguish one genre of music from another(although in the case of doom and death the dividing line is pretty obvious). My point, however, was that one cannot distort the facts regarding the history of rock and heavy metal just because of their predilection in favor of certain styles of rock (e.g.punk) and against others (e.g. progressive).

  • In the case of doom, slow tempo is a necessary but not sufficient trait in order to put any given band under that umbrella.Anyway, personally I prefer traditional/old-school doom (bands like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Trouble,Saint Vitus e.t.c) and the bands that combine doom with stoner (Electric Wizard, Sleep, Spirit Caravan, Kyuss). Not so much fond of doom/death although My Dying Bride is one my favourites together with Winter, an obscure band from the U..S.A. formed in the late 1980s.

  • We agree even in the likings, though my favourite Doom record is still Anathema's 'Silent Enigma' (even if some people say it has atmospheric or deathish elements; I consider it to be Doom). I also think most bands don't stick to labels for the sake of creativity, which is great. For example, Bolt Thrower has some Death Metal songs as well as some Doom ones... and some which contains elements of both!

I appreciate this civilised discussion, rare in Youtube forums. Thanks for that!

  • The only track I have heard from the "Silent Enigma" album is Restless Oblivion which I absolutely love. I guess it is a doom metal record with the occasional gothic elements present also in My Dying Bride's output. I will certainly check out that one. I only have the "Judgement" album from Anathema so far but I'll certainly get the rest of their catalog as well. You know, when I listen to Obituary and Six Feet Under I have the same feeling you describe about Bolt Thrower.

  • The death metal Obituary play is mostly mid-tempo with plenty doom-y passages and a general rock 'n' roll feel I think. By the way, I was always wondering why people bother to come in a site and engage in a pointless exchange of verbal assults towards each other. Rarely is one granted the oppurtunity to be part of a civilised discussion indeed.

  • 'Judgement' is good, but 'Alternative 4' is as good as 'Silent Enigma', though they changed their sound towards a more symphonic flavour. I really recomend that one to you too.

I agree about what you say in relation to Obituary. I think they prove the fact that speed is not a genre, but a mood, and that Death Metal can convey atmosphere too, just like that rock feel you mention. I'm not a Six Feet Under fan, but it's true they are a good example too. Another example is Gorefest, which I love.

  • Yes, "Alternative 4" is wildly popular among fans so I intend to check it anyway. It's a given that doom, gothic and other metal subgenres are more suitable in conveying various (mostly negative) emotions than death, black or speed .But I partly agree with you because in the end metal is primarily about feeling, passion and the expression of emotions. For example, the vibes one gets from listening to black metal are misanthropy, morbidity, connection with nature, seclusion e.t.c.

  • i dont see a reason to put everything into a genre anyways... if only no one cared to put people in genres too... but i gotta draw a line somewhere cuz then ill start bein some hippy faggot...lol

  • Yes, I agree. Personally, my musical taste varies from classical artists to some extreme metal bands, from progressive rock to rock 'n' roll e.t.c. I don't think there is a point in being self-confined in one genre of music. I didn't try to put Paradise Lost in a specific genre, I just made some points (perhaps bad judging by the fact that my comments above have been voted down) regarding doom and other metal subgenres.

  • The fucked great band

  • DRACONIAN TIMES RULED MY ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL LIFE (LOL)...BEST.ALBUM.EVER. "ENCHANTMENT" AND "fOREVER FAILURE"

  • Yeah, that album ruled my college life....

  • And "Draconian Times" is one of the best metal albums ever

  • Agreed.

  • "Though this band isn't bad"?? oh man this is Paradise Lost! Obsiously you have a big hole in your metal education. These guys are the fathers of doom/goth metal.

  • i know ste as a friend and he is cool

  • Not even close to doom metal. Doom Metal is the best genre of metal dude, doesn't compare. Though this band isn't bad. Just my opinion people, no fag namecalling please ;)

  • They were doom metal but as each album went they slowly changed there sound and yes i agree completely Doom Metal is the best genre in metal. Hands Down! :) and name calling is so immature

  • The band were doom metal on their first 2 albums. Some doom purists maintain that those albums are actually 'slow death metal.' Their style has shifted since then, they're certainly not doom metal now. My own opinion is that they've become a better band.

  • Man, you're completelly wrong, there was no Gothic Metal until this band released their first album and gave the genre its name... they created doom and gothic metal

  • their second album.

  • you are wrong about doom metal, doom existed long ago... read SurrealisticEvening coment

  • just checking these guys out as they've been added to the Sonisphere line-up. 1st time i've heard them and i'm impressed. looking forward to seeing them :D
