@Tulljfette Nope, Tomb Raider is categorized as a third-person shooter that has platforming like, Uncharted. Even if it was a Cinematic platformer, it did nothing to bring any recognition to these forgotten classics in this subgenre, like how 3D Platformers did with ordinary 2D Platformers. We're specifically talking about 2D Platformers that has [realistic physics,] and that's something that 2D Platform genre isn't at all with it's cartoony physics. I rest my case!
Thanks for this awesome video, I really appreciated it. And I totally agree with you : cinematic platformer is probably the most underappreciated genre.
@ZSaberProto100 Glad you asked. I own three versions of Out of this World/Another World. I have the SNES version (pretty good), The 15th Anniversary edition for the PC, and the Sega CD that came with "Heart of the Alien" sequel. I can't really remember what port I've recorded in some part of the video, though.
@gexup: You have a nice collection! There is now a PS3 version of Out of this world / Another world. It's a port of the PC game. I've seen it and it looked (and played) perfect on a PS3 that had "homebrew" capability.
Have you played onEscapee? It's similar to Flashback and Another World, but it features better puzzles in my opinion and it's quite immersive in itself. I think it received a "Best 1997 game" award. The only things that bother me is the sometimes slow speed and the sluggish controls. Also a War of the Worlds cinematic platformer is in the works (XBLA only unfortunately... fuck you Microsoft).
I miss platformers they were the best kind of games (especaly the 3d ones) am i the only one who wants another 90s were 3d platformers were everywere (well also some sucked) but stuff like psychonauts and limbo are hopefully saveing platformers today and reminding call of duty players that platformers arnt going anywere!
Very cool and informative video probably the most comprehensive aproach on cinematic platformers at least on youtube. And it even featured my AGS tech demo, which sadly is only that ^^
So would little big planet be concidered a cinematic platformer? Concidering that you can interact with alot of the envirement, and there can many hassards that cause instant death.
For games I do like a challange, but I would like be able to beat that challenge. I have had Oodworld, Abes Oodysee since it came out and STILL CAN"T BEAT IT. Dose that make it bad, no since it is one of my favorite games but I would rather play something that I mave more of a chance of finishing instead of getting stuck over, and over, and over again on one game.
i was listening to your podcast, and you said that smackdown: here comes the pain was the last good svr game in the series. i know that you are kind of booked up, but could you try to make a smackdown: here comes the pain review?
Ah more light shed on the underrated genres, and I definitely agree with the lack of harder games anymore (not to say there are none, they are just hard to find), I do often find myself playing older games for the difficulty, since Ive been clearing newer games which are supposed to have 12 hours of gameplay in only 4 or 5 hours because they were easy and offered no challenging puzzles or particularily difficult sections.
It's no wonder why limbo was such a sucsess since right next to MegaMan 10 and God of war III it's one of my candidates for game of the year and I know god of war is reealy overrated and not as good as every one says it is it's still game of the year material to me.
Wow, now that's something I've never heard of before. The way i look at Oddworld will never be the same after watching this video. Great work, Gexup! You've done a great job promoting this genre and I can hardly wait to see more of them on your channel.
@thefindingperson Well, these are the people who loves to bash these genres that's trying to make a difference. Usually when I talk about genres in Forums, a bunch of these fanboys just shows up and become an asshole claiming that it's not for "real gamers" & forces us to play their type of games when all they do is stick with one genre. I think it's unfair for someone who only plays one genre to act like they have the credibility to tell us what's good and what isn't.
@gexup I hope this doesn´t stop you from making an episode of RPGs genre someday. I want to know so much, like if the first game in the genre was really Dragon Quest, (from what I know, it was based on "choose your adventure" games) TBH I prefer many of the games from that series over most Final Fantasy games, heh.
And don´t worry, as a professional you do know how to deal with those fanboy rants.
FPS was good until every singe fucking game had to steal all of Halo's ideas, such as health regeneration. I mean dude seriously, Call of Duty: Modern Whorefare is basicly Halo without vehicles and imagination. They just took the system and removed the HUD. God I hate those games. Call Of Duty 3 was the last game in the series to stay true to what it was about, telling the stories of WWII soldiers. And even Halo is useless without XBL or Co-Op nowdays. Platforming is always good fun either way!
@shadowjoe94 Well, I need a lot more time before I get to RPGs because it's a BIG genre. If I were to do it, then I need a whole month of RPG videos and discuss about the subgenres as well.
Hmm, never heard of these kind of games (though I guess not surprising). They look pretty neat. Perhaps not my thing exactly but after looking up a few, there is a lot to be respected and find sad how they're so under rated. Video games can indeed be an art form in some way, and the stuff you showed seems deserving of the title. Just a stereotype I guess *shrugs*. Damn shame.
5:10 I'm just inquisitive in having the knowledge to the title of this game? I'm reminiscing and having revelations that this was an antiquated game (well, from my childhood) and I'm just inquiring what the title is. I hope you can respond subsequently. Thank you.
@gexup I'm grateful that you've informed me! This is a nostalgic game and quite sentimental in it's own right that's been anonymous for me, with regards to the title that I have inadvertently forgotten.
... But I will tell you this, my friend... This game has overwhelmed with fear from a young age! There's so much verisimilitude in the cut scenes when you die, and the environment felt legitimately realistic, and not to talk about an ordeal in difficulty! I'm going to search this game out now!
Today, Cinematic plat-formers are quite hard to become popular, The most popular genre is FPS, and I'm sure most of those fanboys see anything 2D as old and crap...
Sometimes I feel bad for the generic FPS fanboys, they really don't know what kind of games they are missing out on!
Generic FPS fanboys need to try a good FPS (i.e. one made by Valve). Easy games can be good, but getting too easy is boring, and I like to have a challenge.
I've never played a game in this genre, and I don't think I ever will. Just like the Ace Attorney games, they just don't look like something I would have fun playing, although that's not to say they're bad.
OH MAN DO YOU KICK ASS AT ABE'S ODYSSEY! I never knew you could get rid of that slig in paramonia by just jumping to the edge of the screen and make him run to the pit.
ps: I whould cout clock tower basically as a cinematic platformer since theres a lot of puzzles and theres plenty of trial and error not to trigger scissorman's presence. Do these facts make it a cinematic platformer?
@AlluMan96 ClockTower is a point-and-click horror adventure game, you can't control Jennifer since all point-&-clicks just directs the character and just watch as you go. And I don't see any "platforming" in Clock Tower. The key about Cinematic Platformers is to play it like a 2D Platformers with adventure style elements & realistic interactions, by walking, jumping, landing, climbing, and bumping on walls, & etc. These are some of the stuff that you don't see in traditional Platform games.
good point. I allways just saw some real simularities with clock tower and alot of the cinematic platformers. The animation, the trial and error, the story, the enviorment and so many other things that made me forget the word PLATFORMER from the title of the genre. If it wasn't for the crosser it whould almost be a platformer. the only thing that jennifer can't do in comparison to abe is jump. she can climb and even fend for her self sometimes but theres only one instans where she jumps.
You're right, Cinematic Platformers are an underrated genre. Plus, I can't wait to see your reviews on some of the games in that genre, mainly the first two OddWorld games, which I heard are pretty good
I think I played one of those but it was really suckish and I mean Action 52 level, though I´m not sure and I´m willing to give these a try. As for FPS I´ll stay with Turok II.
I don´t care what anyone says, to my criteria you are a master reviewer.
10:33 dejavu XD I was playing Gex last week and my brother (Great COD player) asked my: Why do you play these games???(3D platformers like gex and spyro) Me: why not? Brother: They are way too easy. So I asked my brother to complet just one mission of poltergex. He survived for 5 minutes and after that he said that gex sucked XD So the thing of 10:33 reminded me of that. But I can't beat every level of COD without dieing though :P I guess I did write a bit too much, sorry for reading. ^_^
Nice video gexup. I have to say that this was one of those genres that i kind of passed up on. Playing prince of persia and not liking it. I will probly start checking some of them out after i get an idea of what ones to start with.
thank you so much for this episode! one day i was wondering, what game was that where you were fighting against the black shadows and getting crushed by a dinosaur's skull. Heart of darkness it is then, i have to find that game now :D
@D3xterPL Yeah me too, man. I wished that Oddworld Inhabitants are still in business so that they can make more Oddworld games and expand the universe. Coincidentally, I'm planning on doing a review on the Oddworld Quintology. Part 1 is going to be on Abe's Odysee & Exoddus.
