im female & was sexually abused from the age of 5 and growing up was very unlucky to have negative things happen 2 me by men, when i was 18 i had counselling and got put on betablockers none of this stuff helped i feel like a mess most of the time staying in just keeps all the bad people away from me. A few yrs ago i got myself 2 the doctors hoping they would give me anti depressants or something to help me,they sent me away and told me to come bk in a wk i never went bk i have agoraphobia!!!!!
my panic attacks are to do with food too...i had the worst attack a few years ago with a mcdonalds, i just collapsed in a bookstore after a hamburger with friends, who did not understand it or even want to be near it. bad for my self esteem and made me feel so isolated.
Anxiety attack is a 'justified' attack, your upset, etc... Panic attack is sheer insanity, impeding doom, and feels painful... And for me, happens while I'm doing nothing at all.
You are so interesting, smart and well spoken. I love that you explore the connection between diet and smoking to your illness (and if illness is not the correct term then I'm relly sorry). I was wondering if there is a difference between a panic attack and an anxiety attack. Recently I had an occurence where all of a sudden I had radiating chest pain and jaw pain. I was relaxed before it happened. The only thing I got anxious about was the pain but the dr's said it was an anxiety attack.
Lately, I've thought to myself that smoking could be the main cause of my massive anxiety and agoraphobia. I haven't left my house in months now, it seems to be getting worse as the days go by, and I smoke so much now; I'm up to nearly 2 packs a day. I'm going to keep trying to quit, but it's hard because it's like the only thing to pass the time.. such a dilemma.
Medical marijuana is not for everyone, but I am interested in hearing your experiences with marijuana (be it recreationally or medically).
For some, it can be a trigger for paranoia, while for others like myself it can be a great tool for relaxation. I find that my general anxiety while intermingling with other humans, be it walking in the market or a conversation with a coworker, is quite diminished.
It's disappointing that everybody cannot be treated in such a way, but it's worth a shot.
@crypt0gram i also suffer with agrophobia,... and have done for the last 2 years,... im now 30yrs old but at the age of 15 to 22 i use to smoke marijuana hevey, and i think thats whats caused me to be agrophobic,... , ive been to see doctors and they have told me that it "could have ??" ,... i would never touch that stuff again
That's very interesting! I'd never thought of diet maybe being apart of it! Obviously everyone knows you can feel bleurgh after eating too much fast food & it only gives energy rushes not lasting energy but I never thought of the ingredients maybe reacting with the things in out bodies to cause anxiety etc, I deffo want to look more into it. I also have Agoraphobia, have done for alot of years, I hope yours has got atleast eased a little since making the video :)
No! Don't make your videos shorter! Make them longer. Go into detail. Explain some of the terms you often use: anxiety, panic attacks, remission, etc.
Dude, you got to help me out. My little brother is thirteen, and he's been having panic attacks for a while now. The thing is, I DON'T GET IT!! I don't understand what it feels like or what it means to have an anxiety attack. I don't know what he's going through. He still so young. He can't put it into words very well. Please, help me understand.
i act so weird when i have them i cant look people in the eyes i start breathing fast as you said in the last video about hair cuts or being at the dentist its horrible i feel like i am waisting my life cause i know i am smart enough in school but i can never focus i am taking pills that are not helping what so ever no one understand i feel like my brain is taking over me.
@xNARLAx do something about it please, im older now and if you let it go without attempting to set up opportunities you will be in the same boat as me.
I'm 18 and I have agoraphobia.. actually a pre agoraphobia state, when i'm not bound to my room but still have all symptoms.. and it's just awful.. i'm so misunderstood..
Before going out, I search the news for topics to discuss, in case someone talks to me. My workplace had incandescent lights, triggered panic and anxiety everyday, it was the sound they made. In the end i was eating my lunch in a bathroom stall, I couldn't cope anymore. Bless you for not trying to push it off on meds. I took paxil too, brain shocks! Then a slew of anti anxiety meds, right now, clonidine, doesn't work becaus it makes me drugged so then I can't go out at all. sucks
I think these issues are a combination of so many things, diet, upbringing, and most importantly genetics, and you are right no one really knows. You are probably a Highly Sensitive Person, which encompasses many aspects of who you are. I recommend the book by that name, I found it very enlightening, and as a guy I can relate to a lot of what you saying. Another topic, have you looked into omega 3s? Its something that I feel has helped me with anxiety induced palpitations, noticeably...
Holy crap, I had no idea Aspartame was so bad. I've been using it as a sugar substitute for years because I thought it would be BETTER for panic attacks than raw sugar. I feel like an idiot.
I am 42 I had my first agoraphobic attack 11 years ago. I was walking down the road and all of a sudden it felt like my head was going to explode and I perspired like I was in the Sahara desert. That day was my 9/11 it changed my life forever. I didnt reatreat inside i tried to tough it out became more and more dependent on booze to overcome it and became an alcoholic. I am now therefore having to deal with alcoholism and agoraphobia ! But I am a stubborn SOB and I will fight it.
a piece of advice that helps me is that i work out a lot at home... having a good look of your body and the feeling of being strong can really help you feel better and being less afraid to go outside
i have always avoided some situations... i have been depressive for about 3 years but my agoraphobia got really worse in the past 6-7 months...i feel like everyone is always staring at me...after some searching in the internet i realize i have also had and keep having panic attacks...i feel frozen when i walk and i think its because i just don't want to go anywhere...agoraphobia and depression is a bad combination...i havent had any medication but i think about buying some antidepressants
i think you are born with it and have a normal life..everyone thinks thats just your character and you have a low profile but if you a experience a strong shock it might make it really worse in a day
Wow.. Yet again you have described my whole situation as if you were talking about me. I have actually resorted to just buzzing my own hair because i can't go get my hair cut. I also read all the ingredients on things that I eat because I am so afraid that I may be allergic to something that I don't know about. Again thanks so much for this video.
Same situation as you. I can't eat ANY fast food and just about anything i eat i have major anxiety. Iv been agoraphobic for 5-6 years. I can be playing a game, watching tv, listening to relaxation cds and still go in blown out panic attack. I refuse to take any meds iv been on just about everything with no effects and im not willing to harm myself overtime for temporary results.
i was given propanolol for anxiety and my god it made it so hard to breath that i thought i was having a panic attack when i wasnt and inturn it lead me to panic thinking something was actually wrong with me.
i really would like to talk to you and compare some things, i have agoraphobia and panic attacks and i can relate very much to what u say...thanks for this video
I quit smoking, caffeine and alcohol 65 days ago and i have noticed a huge diffrence with my issues..we have the same problem when it comes to going to the hair dresser..i just try to face my fears..seems like the only way for me to deal with it!!...i hate beeing conqured, especially by this disorder..
I know that this question wasn't directed to me, but I'd like to get my opinon in. I feel as though Agoraphobia is something that can be both developed or can happen at birth, but, it is more than likely developed due to environmental issues or things around u such as family, school, friends, etc. causing this disorder.
I have agoraphobia. I have never been diagnosed but I don't like being seen...sometimes. I don't go out unless I really have to and even when I'm in my own backyard I feel like the neighbors can see me and I get nervous. There's nothing wrong with me physically. I think my problem comes from child abuse and being humiliated in public on many occasions growing up. I tend to want no attention on me whatsoever.
I took Paxil and became very violent.Zoloft I got so dizzy all the time.Prozac not so bad but throwing up from it.Xanax well they worked short term.Effexor worked for a limited time then I got off of it this past summer but the doc weaned me off to quickly so I ended up in the hospital.I am on clonazepam(have been for years along with the other drugs(very addictive). Now I'm on Celexa it's o.k,but the drug they wanted to put me on is not available in Canada on low income drug plan go figure??
Not the main cause, but I can tell you smoking throws off many chemicals in the brain as well as the body. For more information people can go to google and type in nicotine and neurochemicals :-)
Hi, firstly your well cute! Ok I totally know how u feel, ive been suffering, like you, with panic/agoraphobia since aged 15, im 24 now and have no social life, because i particulalry hate being out at night. One thing I that I believe, is that since I never had a panic attack until age 18 and then had periods of remission like you said, I was not afraid of it before, or during remission. So on that front, for me, it is fear based, not a physical thing. I also believe, that alot of peoples panic disorder is completely because of the modern world. If I grew up on a farm 1000 years ago, I would have never triggered it in the first place. Or if it had been triggered, would have subsided quickly.

About exercises... well I 'm kind of athletic do some exercices in the morning but I still have the same problem... actually when I do exercise I don't feel really good after.... weird...I'm a litle lost with this... I have heard some people deal with it during 20 years...hard...Doctors don't care about that..
This problem of anxiety or agoraphobia star in the body... our physiology is out of balanced... molecules as serotonine that we have in our body have the fonction to regulate and balance the mood so you notice that our mood is link to a chemical process..
We can change the chemical balance of the body cnaging the diet. Exercise like walking create serotonine in our bodies that make us happier or relaxed less moody...
I have change my diet since last years it make the agoraphobia less present
Oh yeah, and I had to quit smoking due to my panic attacks,I would have never been able to before but it got to where since they're a stimulant, every time I lit up after smoking for 10 years (also),I freaked out!It would send me straight into the worst attack imaginable. The withdrawals are nothing nice, and never quite go away but subside a great deal after only a couple of weeks and you will def feel better,I promise. Why wouldn't you?My anxiety is real bad right now,i'm scared to leave my room.
