  • excellent lesson. communication is massive part of being a great musician, I totally agree. Its easy to forget. Also easier to do in your room and sometimes hard to do on stage. I am always working on being more intentional about this.

  • Amazing guitar player!

  • Dear Tomo, your D'pergo guitar Finish is that call ''Firemist Silver Metallic '' or the other color??? it look very nice, thanks

  • feeling and ears... yes!

  • Tomo you have such good insight! Always a pleasure watching your videos

  • @Smoothtlknwhtboi Thanks so much!

  • When I practice I often look at the fretboard, but when I play I don't. But I guess it's better to stop doing this anyway.

And sometimes I practice without my amp, but it's because sometimes I can't make noise in my house. I think it's better to practice with no amp than no practice at all

  • Very helpful, video, I have a horrible habit of playing without my amp plugged in, sometimes it's just more convenient to not go into the other room and plug it in which is lazy I know! Thank you for showing me the light and forcing myself to plug in and really HEAR my playing and not just looking to see if it looks right. :)

  • Your Beast!!!!

  • Great lesson and great essentials for playing. Do you still teach at Berklee? I actually got accepted but I won't be attending due to financial issues but it would've been awesome studying under you

  • @xdivinebladex Yes. I teach at Berklee. If you can ... come to Boston, stay a few days. We can do master lessons. More and more people do that. 2-3 hours. Or you can contact me to get my Hot Set. (cds/dvds & a lot of lesson material.) Thanks!

    Tomo

  • Great tute, thanks for caption-titles :D

I play with my amp and some headphones. Acceptable?

I love playing a bit loud. The sound vibrations onto your strings help sustain and feels great :D

I'm sure Tomo knows what I mean.

    Love your work Tomasu!

  • Thanks. Nobody can make perfect. As long as you know what's important. That's great!

    Tomo

  • @TomoFujitaMusic

Tomtom, can you PLEASE make some tutorial DVD's. Seriously, we're sick of Yngwie and Eric Johnson trying to teach us good habits...

You're lessons we yearn to learn from, master.

PS: Love the Berkelee jam with John :)

  • Thanks for you kind words. Did you try my dvds "Accelerate Your Guitar Playing " and " More Accelerate Your Guitar Playing" dvds from Hal Leonard? Try those first.

    Tomo

  • Thanks Tomo-

Once again sound advice from the master-

    Love your DVD's as well.

    PB

    Tomo

  • AYGP +AYGP More...

Taking my time and trying to nail each practice session. Notice a difference already when I play.

    Fundamentals- they make a difference.

    PB from LI

  • Great to hear that... those 2 dvds are great for building solid foundation. Hope you can get my new book/cd when it's available in English. You got it!

    Tomo

  • @TomoFujitaMusic

Please let me know when new book/cd are available.

Also guitar sounds great but what amp are you playing it through?

    PB

  • Great lesson, Tomo! Very important!

  • Thank you.

    Tomo

  • Not looking at the fretboard is a great skill, one that gives the illusion of effortlessness. But in your case, Tomo, it's not an illusion lol

  • Thank you!

    Tomo

  • Good Point. I agree! I will apply what you teach. thanks.. hope to see more.

  • Thanks. Let me know which video did you like? I will make series of videos.

    Tomo

  • Nice Ideas , YES! I agree with this lesson.. Thanks for sharing , hope to see more.

  • You're welcome! Thanks.

    Tomo

  • Tomo, do you recommend the same advice for bass guitar players?

  • Yes, I think so. Why not?

    Tomo

  • Because I've had 2 teachers tell me to play much harder to get a better sound for bass! But I like your advice. I naturally play softer and more to the touch when playing bass fingerstyle.

  • Well, there is no absolute correct answer. All depends direction and personal attention. You can play a bit tighter, softer... it's nice to have three levels of dynamic control by your picking. Make sure your left fingers are relaxed a lot.

    Tomo

  • great vid man

  • Thanks!

    Tomo

  • this awesome info takes only few minutes to explain, but it could help big leap for better playing.

    Thank you very much,Tomo.:)

  • I really enjoy making a video lesson less than 2 minutes. I did go over this one. Great to hear that. Thank you.

    Tomo

  • do you consider to have your book other translation in the near future? if no such plan, then i would go buy the book now

  • Thanks for asking. Hal Leonard is interested in my book/CD.

    Tomo

  • Thanks for asking. Yes, I am planning to do that. Thanks.

    Tomo

  • @TomoFujitaMusic

hi tomo san, still planning? i'm waiting for english or chinese version >_<

  • great advises... thanks sir.,,,

  • You're welcome!

    Tomo

  • Tomo, when did you start playing the guitar?

Also, do you have any words of encouragements for those who started the instrument late?

  • To me, all you need a lot of passion. Doesn't really matter when you start or how long.... you could spent 20 years of playing with no trained , bad habits.... better start late with good habits.

    Tomo

  • !3. Took me a year to play something. Best thing to do is not compare with others. What you have, who you are... beautiful thing. About guitar playing. Most people self-taught and tend to learn fast and skip all foundation. (not everyone). So if you focus on your foundation for a while, this will keep you improving so age doesn't matter to me. So please feel good about yourself and practice, play your guitar!

    Tomo

  • I never thought of that.... i just figured people played sooo much they just didnt need to look. But i think it kinda steers u into making the feel and sound priority. And it should always be about the sound! Thnx Tomo!

  • Thank you! Glad to hear that.

    Tomo

  • awesome

  • Thanks.

    Tomo

  • no wonder why JM sometimes solos with a blank stare look in his face. haha you taught him well.

  • your lessons are amazing every time. almost to the point where i'm like "why didn't i think of that?!"

  • This helped me a lot, BUT do you think that this is relevant to anyone, no matter for how long they've played? I've only played for two years, and while I can play chord progressions while not looking at the fretboard; I find it very difficult not to look at it while playing solos. Should I get better before I look up, or is it just a matter of practice?

  • I am just offering this two points to everyone and no intention on pushing my opinion. When I teach, I tell my students with choices, when you practice, don't afraid to miss or hit wrong note and hear those by your ear not by looking at. Everything will take some time and you will have different results. Everything is up to you. Do both and think about yourself. Thanks for watching!

    Tomo

  • you're right. being afraid of wrong notes is the absolute worst possible habit one can get into. people take musical mistakes way too seriously!

  • Good attitude and you can make something really happening unless hit a few funny notes... otherwise you only stay safe are with shapes! If you a wrong note, hit again! Make sure it wasn't good that moment? Which chord? Maybe you can slide 1/2 step up or down... now it become right note for you!

    Tomo

  • I think it's important for every levels, years of experience. It's hard to do so you need take your time. Try it. It's important to how top use it, how to practice not HOW MUCH practice.

    Tomo

  • Thank you very much Tomo. I wish I could play those cool phrases without a mistake and without taking a look at the fretboard... ha ha...

  • Thank you very very much you all the reason that's very true !!!!!bleess

  • Thank for the lessons

  • Easy concepts that no one thinks about. Yet they will help you immensely. Beauty. Keep it coming Tomo!

  • Thanks for posting this series of videos Tomo, this one is specially useful for a newbie like me as I was practicing a lot looking at the guitar and without amp turned on. :)

Great playing, you got yourself another admirer.

    Greetings from Portugal.

    Take care :)

  • you dont work the guitar.. you play it - Les Paul..

  • It's interesting that you said to plug into an amp. I read a Eddie Van Halen interview where he said it doesn't matter if you plug in all the time, and that he didn't do it much when he was noodling around the house. I always play my guitar unplugged because of that, and when I plug in at the end of the week, it feels amazing.

  • I think EVH used to hear his tone from his amp... then he just said whatever he said... it's cool! Everyone has ...but you could choose a few choices and do it, think about it. Possibilities!

    Tomo

  • Tomo brings up a very important point. A lot of players will rely too much on trying to find scale shapes on the fretboard rather than trying to find that sound with their ears. The end goal of learning scales and arpeggios is not to visually memorize the shapes, it is to internalize the sound of those scales and arpeggios, using your musical memory in your mind simultaneously with the muscle memory in your fingers to reproduce sounds rather than relying on your eyes. Close your eyes and try it

  • Wow, I have never thought about telling my students NOT to look at the guitar. I love your "take" on feeling and conveying emotion. Thanks all the wonderful posts. Keep posting and I will keep commenting.

  • this is immensely helpful. I always wondered why I heard so much extra noise when plugged in. I also do spend too much time looking at the fretboard. I will definitely now practice through an amp and keep my eyes off the fretboard. Thanks Tomo!

  • "Don't your eyes to play ... use your feeling and use your ears"

Exactly! Play from your heart and soul. Feel what your playing. And always your ear. Your ear will never lie
