I've got certain prescribed opinions on Holdsworth's collaborators. I really wish he'd continue in the jazz vain a la -sixteen men. Not into Wackerman much, nor Donati, and Bruner Jr. Is an egomaniac. Novak was excellent -I like nuance, dynamics and understatement. Some of his drummers don't have it.
This guitarist is truly an artist.I love this.So much "music" out there does nothing to spark feelings...emotion,Holdsworth has it all.He can excite you with his infatuating technique...but he can also take you on a journey of aural colors.Moods.Waves.Soul.He takes you to another level.Like Wayne Shorter or Coltrane.
This guy.....I almost gave up on guitar after seeing him live in '91 (by the way, saw Eric Johnson within 2 months of seeing him --- another reason I almost gave up). Incredible, so musically complex, and beautiful.
This is the only Holdsworth song I like, so far...One of his longer ones but much easier to listen to than most of his songs...it actually has an accessible melody for once! And I love the whole jam band aspect, its not just Allan's legato dominating everyone else, they really work well together here.
@dshznt182 In case you haven't already checked Allan's music (that means his studio albums mostly), feel free to visit my channel and listen to some of his songs, so that you get a good idea of his musicality... I uploaded quite a few songs from almost every album of his (the ones that haven't been uploaded before by other youtube users which also happen to be some of my favorites), so, give him one more chance... :) His music is so unique that needs some time to be appreciated and loved.
Thanks, Kuzalias, but I have the answer after a LOT of digging... It's a Clavia Nord Stage (not sure whether the 88 or 88-EX). BTW that's a cX-3, not cR3. I'm happy with my C8P 88-note master controller, but it'd be fun to have something 'different.'
@Kuzalias Actually the red keyboard on the left isn't a Karma but rather it's one of the many Nord brand keyboards. Mostly known for their bright red appearance.
@Filament4Sure the red one one is a Clavia Nord Stage. It's a virtual analog keyboard specialized on tone wheel organ, electric piano and clavonet sounds, but is also has a synth section.
I love AH's playing and have been a fan of his style since I first heard him in 85; he sounded like EVH playing jazz at the time; later I found out EVH was actually inspired by him. I wish he would do a concert with the great Chick Corea; now that would be something!!
Man.. after all this time, NObody sounds like Holdsworth.. he is so incredible. His legato technique is simply jaw-dropping. His tone, unique in all fusion.. he really phrases like a horn player.
Wackerman's secret is keeping a young mind. I know: I'm 58 and I still have the brains of a fifteen year old. Seriously though, this Yoshi recording is some of Holdsworth's best stuff. Alan Pasqua gives new meaning to electric piano. It don't git any better than this.
More subtle than Meetings of the Spirit, which was more a vamp than anything else. It will take me weeks to figure out the progression here ;p [forget the guitar solo, I'll never have a hope fo that]
Keep coming back to this and hearing something different each time. Wackerman plays this 6/8 groove so sweet and his solo at the end is just sick. Special stuff here.
Holdsworth is my Mullah and he's on my mind more than my wife - ha. But the question is: how in the world does Chad Wakerman continue to look like he is 16 years old?
@Eflatmajor7sharp11 Your name is my favourite chord. Stacking a major triad with the major sevenths minor triad, i.e. Eb + Dm. Actually, that gives you a ninth as well but that just adds to the sweetness.
Apart from the fact that I'm a die-hard Holdsworth-Fan, I really love Pasqua's modest and unpretentious style. Few but extremely well placed and inspired notes. This is true greatness and so different from the hyperactive Kei Agaki, AH played with in the 80s. For Allan's music, there has never been a better man on keys than Pasqua...
Right - I thought, wait is this "Dance of the Mayas" - ha. But alas, as McLaughlin was my man in the 70's, Holdsworth is my mullah for the the ages...
I love this piece - so moody and develops so slowly and wonderfully.
