This is Not the Original Lead Singer..The Original was Joey Vann...He passed away in 1984 at 40 years old....No one can sing this like Joey!! I miss Him...:-(
Some of the most beautiful music ever written and performed there will never be anything ever like it again. When these guys are gone and the rest of us die out the world will never know what good music was .
It is hard to compare eras - we don't have Richie and Tommy recording in sound studios like Joey and Mike. The important thing is they are keeping the sound of the Duprees in front of new generations. Not just the Duprees but the sound of great recording artists that have withstood the test of time. PS - my favorite is Joey - probably because I grew up listening to his recordings.
Saw this group at the one and only best feast in Hoboken, The St. Ann's Feast and they were AWESOME. My oldest child was just about a year old; he's going on 18 in a few months!
This was the best Duprees line up, IMHO, & Richie Rosato made it so--what a voice he had. This is from '98, & The guys were lookin good & sounding even better. They were supposed to be on the 1st PBS Doo Wop Special in '99, but until Mike agreed to join them onstage, they couldn't do it. Their 2001 Perf. is a masterpiece. Wolfsky9
@TheJukeboxjim The man second from the right is Jimmy Spinelli... he sang with Vito in the '80's... Vito couldn't use the name "Vito and the Salutations" in the '80's and there was a bogus group that had the name.. maybe you are thinking of that group.. I have no idea who sang with them... Vito had to use "Vito Balsamo and group" when he performed.
@vghlivesri I saw them on a Nadar show in N J.Sad to hear time and time again, that the voice on the record, can't use the name in concert.Once again the ticket holder loses out.Its nice to see that PBS'S TJ L at least tries to get the original stars to reunite, even if it's only one night.
HELLO SOLID GOLD FANS...FIRST OFF LET ME SAY THAT THO VITO WAS IN NC MAKING PIZZAS AFTER HIS HAY DAY ANOTHER GRP DID COME ALONG..IT HAD JIMMY SHELLEY FROM THE ORIGINAL SALUTATIONS AND EDDIE FROM THE 5 DISCS.I OFT DID BASE FOR THEM IN SHOWS IN THE 80;S I HOPE THAT HELPED YOU...
The frontman you're referring to is probably 'Frankie G'. I worked (guitar/keyboards) with Vito and the Salutations on and off during the mid-late 70's til perhaps 1984. Richie resembles Frankie tho Frankie was a 'smaller' guy. the other lead was Eddie Santucci. Jimmy Spinelli of the current Duprees (usually 3rd from the left) was also w/the group. These guys were all good but Jimmy was the incredible entertainer who commanded the stage and drove the audiences wild. (Larry guitar)
These are not the original Duprees! Not one of them made any of the original Duprees songs! How can they call themselves the Duprees? Not one original in this group!!
This song came out in November 1963, just a few months before the British Invasion, and for that reason I've always thought of it as the last great doo-wop song.
Actually, there were a number of good doowop songs that came out after this. One great doowop group that was not stopped completely by the Brits was the Jive Five, who still put out great doowops for the next few years.
@hjb103055 Hey, you're right. I forgot about that one. When you think about it, doo-wop (or similar sounding songs) lasted a little longer than 1963. Like "Sweet Talkin Guy" by the Chffons in 1966 or "Jimmy Mack" by the Vandellas in 1967. Or "Dry Your Eyes" by Brenda & The Tabulations (also 1967). Come to think of it, The 4 Seasons never really stopped sounding Doo-Woppy.
@mrcity2000 I was just trying to give "Have You Heard" some added distinction by saying it was the last great doo-wop song. (But I do believe it.) There was still some hold-over doo-wop stuff after the British Invasion, but, as you suggest, it sounded a little out of place. (BTW, "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" was a great song.)
Yeah... plus "Goodbye" has been covered in other genres, particularly country, whereas I haven't seen any evidence of this one appearing outside of doo-wop. This is definitely a great song too, and thanks to DooWopJoe for sharing! (And sorry for the multiple comments, I didn't think the other one ever got posted... now I know how YT commenting works! :-P)
@57highland I beg to differ too. Well after the "end" of the Doo-Wop era, the Casinos had success with Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye. One of my personal faves, but it sounds a little out of place with the rest of my music from 1967!

@57highland The last great Doo-Wop song I think was Morse Code Of Love by The Capris(1982). When Have You Heard came out I was a month shy of turning 3 years old. I heard this song being played on Music Radio 77 WABC New York, and always loved it. I saw The Duprees in the late 90s, and the music was great. I hope we continue to find little tidbits of these memories.
@Desoto875 I didn't know that any of the doo-wop groups stayed active that long (til 1982). I was 6 when "Have You Heard" came out, so it wasn't my era, either. I think I first heard it around 1976, when the first wave of full-time "oldies" stations appeared on the radio.
I can't even tell you how many times I've seen these guys in person. My Mom would always take me to DooWop shows. It was SUCH a blast! I was the only 20 something year old singing every song. I don't care what anyone says... THIS is music!!!
Fat Tommy should get his own group and call them something else. Richie is a great sub (here), but let Mike Kelly have his day again as he brings back the real thing.
At my stepsons wedding the dance floor was empty. The DJ played this song 'Have you heard" I asked my new wife to dance.I knew her xhusband was watching us I held her real tight, just her and myself on the dance floor. His loss my gain.Great classic.
Could someone tell me if theres a CD out there with Richie Rosato and the Duprees. Just accidently found this song on YOU TUBE and fell in love with it. I could listen to this for hours on end.
One thing is for sure..Richie was great on lead and sounded like the original. Now Tommy is singing lead and should take lessons from Richie.Sorry Tommy....
Sir, Judging by the appearances of the guys, it was around 1996 to/99. Late 90's, for certain. If only Richie had stayed, The Duprees, would have remained Fabulous. What a shame! Wolfsky9
@x3br0kenbl0nde Judging from everyone's appearance, it had to be between 1995 & 1999. --somewhere in those years. Richie should have stayed with The Duprees. Really. Wolfsky9
Oh, my all-time #1 song from The Duprees. Fall/ winter, 1963/64, Denver Colorado, I was 17 y/o, a Senior & oh, did I fall in love with this masterpiece. Joey Vann or Richie Rosato, either do it real justice, & give it the romance only great voices can do. Richie, you were just so wonderful when you were with The Fabulous Duprees! Phil, Jimmy & Tony look so much younger also---but then, weren't we all? God Bless, Richie. Wolfsky9

Joe, do you know who's on lead here?Is he the same singer who fronted Vito and the Salutations?
TheJukeboxjim 6 months ago in playlist The Duprees Mix
@TheJukeboxjim
The lead is Richie Rosato. No, the lead of Vito and the Salutations was Vito Balsamo.
DooWopJoe 6 months ago
@DooWopJoe Thanks Joe, I know Balsamo was the original lead but I thought Richie fronted the group in the 80's,with Vito, but I could be wrong.
